We just don't pay enough tribute to turkey vultures.
Though they are one of the most common buzzards in America (more than journalists), they don't seem to get the same accolades as eagles and hawks.
I mention this because this weekend is the 13th annual Kern Valley Vulture Festival. Check out this announcement on how to celebrate this proud bird.
Some people don't get excited about turkey vultures because they are, well, ugly. Their heads have all the charm of a decaying...
There we are, tootling down the road, and then the traffic light turns yellow.
What do you do?
Stop? Speed up? Melt down?
What if there was an electronic device that would instantly tell you want to do?
Oddly enough, people work on these things.
I am pretty sure that every time someone makes the wrong decision, he or she knows it is wrong as they are going it.
So I'm not about to go out and buy some device to replace my brain. But, I'm guessing, people without much of a...
The American Dental Association has given its seal of approval to sugarless gum.
This makes me happy because as I am writing this, I am chewing Orbit White peppermint gum.
I am usually chewing gum because it is my only addiction.
The ADA said its independent review of the studies confirms those three gums have been shown to help prevent cavities, reduce plaque acid and strengthen teeth.
For some stupid reason, you can't chew gum in Kern County courtrooms, but in my 29 years...
I've lived in Bakersfield 29 years and learned last week for the first time where this Truxtun name came from.
The nuggets of information in the Seven Wonders of Kern County story is worth your read for a little local flavor.
Things like:
Dewar's Candy Shop has been here 95 years.
More than 4,000 pounds of pigeon droppings had to be removed from the iconic clock tower at the Fox Theater.
The Finn who sculpted Fr. Garces also sculpted Col. Thomas Baker.
The...
Someone burned Almondale Park again.
A fire that caused about $40,000 in damage was discovered on Tuesday, more than two years after an Aug. 14, 2005, fire caused $35,000 at the same park.
In that time span, five other fires caused more than $100,000 damage at Mondavi and North Beardsley parks.
This is a new low for scum.
Setting fire to toys for children.
So little children who giggle on swings and scream down slides have to ask their mommies, "Why?"
Maybe to see...
We had a recent poll on whether people dream in color.
A surprising number of people said either they dream in black and white or they don't know.
That strikes me as odd.
So I wanted to ask real people. For lack of a better group, I'll ask you.
Do you dream in color? Do you dream at all?
I dream in color. The blonde I dream about is my wife. Charlize Theron might show up uninvited.

Jona Williams whose child goes to Freedom Middle School got a letter signed by principal Trica Lazenby saying that the students would have to pay 10 cents per page for all photocopied materials used in their social studies classes, or face failure on assignments.
Ms. Williams was outraged, asserting that she pays taxes to take care of such things.
And so she does.
The letter was a class project on taxation without representation. Lazenby noted the exercise was taken straight...
We will be doing a story about high school students giving blood,
Apparently, it is a popular activity.
There's not much downside to giving blood — you get to lay down for a few minutes and you get something sweet at the end. Worth a little poke in your arm.
I don't give blood any where near enough. I feel bad about that because I am either B-positive or B-negative and neither are in great supply.
How often do you give blood?

About 200 students in the Panama Buena Vista Union School District are finding out they have to transfer to a different school because of overcrowding.
At least one parent has additionally found out that her two children can't go to the same school.
Both children started out at Louden School, but because of overcrowding, the 4th grader has to go to Berkshire, which has no room for the second grader. So the second grader remains at Loudon, but the 4th grader is being transferred to...
