Editorial Page Editor Dianne Hardisty writes about reader response to concerns in the Kern River Valley that Caltrans signs warning visitors not to swim in the Kern River are intimidating and discourage tourism.
Sunday Column July 1, 2007
A friend breathlessly pointed out in a telephone call last week: “It’s like the movie ‘Jaws.’”
OK, I responded cautiously, not having the guts to tell him that I had never seen the 1970s box-office-busting...

UC Merced’s selling point is that it offers great student-teacher ratios at the same great quality offered at all University of California campuses.
The campus is small, has a very homey feel to it and is diverse. In fact, it has the most student diversity of all the University of California schools.
It was noticeable as I toured the campus in May and I watched students of different backgrounds go to and from their finals with the somber looks on their faces...

Readers stopped short of calling me dumb as a box of rocks for not being able to figure out how to eat healthy on a $1 per meal budget for five days.
Their letters came in response to a column I wrote earlier this month about food stamps and my efforts to exist five days on a $1-a-meal menu.
I was told to visit 99-cent and dollar stores for lunch meats, milk, fruits and vegetables. I tried that. Expiration dates on food were questionable. Pardon me for wanting...
Road Hound is a new and occasional Opinion section feature that attempts to answer readers’ questions about metropolitan Bakersfield’s street and traffic congestion problems.
Opinion section staff will sniff out the answers to readers’ questions, track down wrongdoing and howl loud enough for traffic problems to be noticed and corrected.
Appearing on Sunday June 17 Forum page are readers’ questions about 7th Standard Road, White Lane, Rosedale Highway and Mt....
The intersection of White Lane and Akers is a nightmare.
White Lane is like a race track. Cars and trucks speed along and many of them run the red light at Akers.
I have been trying to get turn signals for several years because there are many accidents caused by people turning without even looking. Many people in my neighborhood have been hit. I have had many near misses myself.
They now have opened Akers through to Pacheco Road. There is increased traffic causing more problems. I...
This is not a single traffic story. It is ongoing and an everyday mess for many.
Go south from Columbus, down Mt. Vernon Avenue, or north from Bernard. That area is a convoluted mish mash of traffic going every which way into and out of parking lots and entrances to businesses. Mixed with pedestrians jaywalking — since the block is so long — that makes it extra hazardous.
I cannot adequately describe the complexities and hazards of this section. When a fire truck roars down from...
Now that they have widened Rosedale Highway from the 99 Freeway west, can someone please tell me how long it will be, if ever, before a bridge or tunnel will be built at the railroad crossing one mile west of the 99?
Who owns the spur line and what do they use it for? All it takes is one train and 10 minutes to equal miles of traffic backed up in both directions. This seems to happen during busy daytime traffic.
Do the railroad companies plan the times because they enjoy laughing at all the...
Why are they widening the road on 7th Standard Road, from Highway 65 to the 99 Freeway? What good is that going to do unless they widen the freeway overpass.
It is almost impossable to turn onto 7th Standard Road from the 99 Freeway, both northbound and southbound. Also it is dangerous from Saco Road. There are way too many accidents there. Stop signs or traffic lights need to be installed.

It wasn’t pleasant to be around me toward the end of last week. I was tired, grumpy and I had no energy to do anything — except whine.
I was supposed to be eating on $1 per meal for five days. Meaning, I did my Sunday grocery shopping for the week — Monday through Friday — with a $15 budget. It had gotten repetitive and boring by Tuesday. On Wednesday I thought I was going to pass out from lack of snacking and by Thursday...
