freethinker - > If you judge people, you have no time to love them. -> people are people so why should it be...
people are people so why should it be...

As I've said many times, I've encountered many different "types" of people in my life. Friends, acquaintences, co-workers... When I say type I dont mean age, color, etc but I mean characteristics; personalities, beliefs, actions. The person that they are inside.

I've been a very easy person in my life to be bullied, it is a huge part of my past. I've had so many friendships where I've felt bullied that I run away screaming when people don't bully me. (Well not literaly, but it is a scary situation for me).

The question that is perplexing me is how I put labels on types of people. For me nowdays, there are two types; believers and non believers. Over the past year, the belivers have been a huge influence in my life and have been essential in the healing I have recieved over the past year. They are God's love in action, and I am grateful for them.

My non-believer friends don't understand my walk with God, but they are supportive anyway. I know in the past I just wanted to convert everyone, but I know my life speaks more than words can ever express. I spent a few days with my non-believer friends, and it was a fun time. It was months ago and they still call reguarly to chat.

These two types of friends, its not a contest of who is better and "which side do I go on?" Because, after all, no matter what people believe, people are people and we are all free to believe what suits us. My non-believer friends don't try to change me and I don't try to change them.

Just like the media does with famous people, we, as people, tend to put people on a pedastol. Millionares=worthwhile, homeless=useless. (exaggerated of course). We by nature judge people by their who, what, when, where, and (mostly) ignoring the type of person they are.

We are warned of this many times in the Bible, (Matthew 7:15-15Beware of false prophets, who come to you dressed as sheep, but inside they are devouring wolves.)how someone on the outside looks to have it all together while falling apart inside, and the people that lives are falling apart on the outside actually have stability within themselves. Apperances mean nothing, what they do for a living is useless, where they live is so unimportant.. what is really important is a persons character.

I know I am guilty of this. I put my believer friends on a pedastol, and while I don't concider non-believers "nobodies", I put all the emphasis on them. As far as I'm concerned, they can do no wrong. And of course that thinking is wrong! How many religious "leaders" have been corrupt? How many non-believers have done works that could be works of God?

One teaching that has stuck by me is "take the labels off". Which has been very powerful for me in my life, since the people that "should love me"; actively don't. And strangers are nicer to me than others. But it should be that way for everyone. Labels are useless, its about our character and our heart.

We are all of value in this world, we all have our stories, our opinions, our strengths and weaknesses. And luckily, they are all different. Where I'm weak another is strong, and vice versa. We all have a purpose, and no one is better or worse than another. Just because my believer friends have the same beliefs as me, it doesn't make them better than me, and it doesn't mean we are really friends. Some people just clash for whatever reasons. The sooner I learn that and put that into practice... the better off ALL of my friends and I will be.

Sir,  I  worked at my trade for 20 years and got to know Christians, and  non believers, and never thought anything about it. I had an opportunity to change jobs. The man I went to work for, hired all  the believers he could, and me. I swear, Ihad never  seen  so many selfish, greedy, and thieves. That started my present way of thinking.I've had some good friends who were religious, and they tried to make me believe. But I just can't.  Maybe the fact that I have an I.Q. of  145   is why.

All the talk about what "Christians are like" and "that's why I'm not a believer" are copouts as far as I'm concerned.  I don't base my beliefs on the actions of others no matter what they call themselves.  Folks need to own up to their beliefs, whatever they may be,  and not use other people as their reasons for those beliefs or disbeliefs.

I don't need "proof" that God exists and I don't need others to tell me what faith means any more than I need other "Conservatives" to validate my political beliefs.

Lemmings set a good example of what happens when you don't think for yourself.

Well written and thoughtful. People will be people, that is so true. I agree somewhat Nancy but I have to say I follow very lemming like ,folks that can build machines,or figure out scientific stuff, like how germs work~ because my mind does not work that way. We all do judge a group of people by their actions as a group. Thats why we do not walk up to groups of people with guns and start talking. Thats not to say maybe a good soul is not in that group .but until we know if they are hunters or gang bangers ~we judge them.

Anyway very nice bit of work, freethinker.

I agree with Nancy.  Whether one practices a religion or not is not important.  What is important is how they live their lives and interact with other people.  I have known both and there are good and bad in both. A person should be allowed to believe or not believe and not be judged on it.

Nancy,, Not  to make you mad,  But, you don't think millions of people all over the world, every  Sunday, flock to a meeting place, and worship an entity  they've never seen,  is not lemming- like?

myxlnt....only if they take everything said without question or study.  That was the point of my lemming comment above.  Since I'm a very sporadic church goer at best, my belief system doesn't come from following anyone off a cliff.  Likewise, to say that one doesn't believe in God or religion based on the actions of others is just a tad lemming like in my book.  Only it's the opposite cliff.

Myxlnt1, IQ has nothing to do with it.  There are Believers and non-Believers of varying IQ's, some with in your range and others much higher or lower.  The very substance of Faith is Knowing without seeing.  It can't be explained in any religion.

I'm with myxlnt1 on this one. Knowledge kind of blows faith out of the water.

Not if you possess both.

Science disproves much of what is believed to be true about religion, so, someone who truly believes science realizes most of religion is not possible, and there would be no use in having faith. It's fairly simple, actually.

So what is the fairly simple science explanation, without faith, how everything "evolved" from nothing?
posted by myxlnt1 on Dec 10, 2007 at 09:05 PM
You know how it evolved from a cell.  Speaking of faith , I really think  Godwas pretty smart to put those dinosaurs,  and foliagein the Earth, miles and miles below the surface, so we could have oil.  I'd rather believe in todays scientists ,than a history book,  that has  many interpretations, the two main ones today,Christians  versus  Islam.  Apparently , it depends on where you were born. where Jesus preached, or the New world  who have their own version. It just depends on who your preacher is.  so be it.

Big Bang baby. Try explaining primordial elements without it. And, to quell your future question, before the big bang, time did not exist, so asking what happened before the big bang is meaningless. Quantum physics is fun!
posted by TangledUpInBlue on Dec 10, 2007 at 09:52 PM

And then of course the obvious answer following the big bang is evolution, even though some people try to deny evolution despite the presence of fossils, which outline evolution since the beginning of time.

It was funny myxlnt, in one of my religion classes, everyone was laughing at how absured it was that Ganesh had an elephant head and Shiva was created from a lotus flower (depending on one's Hindu creation belief).... but what was really funny was that those religious fables are no more believable than a man walking on water or turning water into wine.
