Are we having fun yet ?

A rant… I have just been thinking alot lately… what’s the point of the game we are in and what have we really done that truly makes a difference, I can’t think of anything myself. I just do not see any true progress in the world. Somewhat depressing maybe but I just don’t see the point of it all and where we are headed… there should be something on the horizon… but I can’t see it.

What have we really accomplished in the last, oh let’s say one hundred years. Not much, except for the changes in electronic equipment we are still using the same basic technologies that have been around forever. We are still using the same old transportation methods, Volt, Prius or whatever, it’s still a Henry Ford. Planes, trains and automobiles. “Well we have traveled in space and sent men to the Moon, (maybe?). And so what if we did, what did we get out of that? Even our civilizations haven’t changed, we still kill each other over Gods and goods. Then we have our archaic government system. Republicans, Democrats, who cares, none of them are doing any of us any good. All they seem to accomplish is division. They say that they want to help us out. They are certainly not helping anyone but themselves. Are any of us average people better off than folks were 100 years ago, I think not.  The class division is way worse now than it used to be, sure their rich buddies are better off, but we are not. They are not helping me and they are certainly not helping those less fortunate than myself (although they would like us to think they are). Like this health care debacle they are working on now, I’m sure we will all be worse off after “they” get done with us, things just always seem to work out that way “put in their hands”. And who came up with the idea of charging people for food in the first place. I mean kind of like charging you for dirt, oh I forgot, they do that, property taxes. OK, I’ll boil it all down real quick here for you. I have a government that basically tells me what to do, I work for a company that tells me what to do, I live in a house that someone else owns (the bank). I work so that I can pay my government, buy some food and pay for the dirt I’m on. One day I will die and not have to pay for my food or dirt anymore… to what end. Oh yeah that’s right I have kids and grandkids that can work for the rest of their lives to pay the government, someone for their food and dirt and then they will die… and so on and so on… what’s the point. Have we really done anything in the last 100 years… I don’t think so… and at this rate we are not going to.

Are we having fun yet. Thanks for the rant… and really, what’s the point.

Well Steve, you just said everything I have been saying for some time now. It sounds depressing and it is that so many of us are feeling the same way.  Follow the money. Our lives have become all about money.  People used to trade or barter for goods and services; my grandmother traded her sewing skills for food, my grandfather traded his carpentry skills for the plumbing or electrical skills of another, everybody fed and clothed the doctor for his skills. The country has overburdened itself with people, cars, trucks, buses, trains & planes, and now complains about the over crowding, the ghettos, the lack of education for all, the fumes and the costs. Other have taken advantage of systems put in place to help not to live on forever.  Unions have overpriced the employee right out of a job.

As for going to the moon.................who really knows and at this point, who cares. There are people starving in the USA and we spent billions to send a rocket to the moon (?) to see what?????????? water? So we can possibly send all the rich up there to then foul another planet??  Way to go earthling.

Yes, it is depressing and sad what we humans have done to this planet.  I did hear a radio piece that indicated that co2 problem was 3% human problem and 97% natural causes so if all human life were eradicated it really would make no difference at all as there would still be 97% natural co2 !!!  Maybe we should leave Gore and obama behind here on earth so we can hear the "OOPS"!!

Sorry to hear that you're feeling so blue, Steve.  I think most people on here can relate, as we all have times when we question the point of all the running we do on our respective wheels. When I find myself mired in pointlessness, I tend to go micro:

  • The dog can think of one thousand points to my being here, not the least of which is that I have thumbs to open the cans.
  • I may not have done great things in the world, but my kids still have a good shot at it.
  • Music has the power to soothe nearly all of my ills, if I let it.
  • In the midst of all of the development, a couple of tree squirrels still find their way to my backyard to have a party nearly every afternoon.
  • Every day the world is blessed with people who commit amazing acts of kindness, write life-altering sentences, give generously to others and serve as inspirations, if we choose to seek them out.
  • Beauty is in every corner, even when we're not looking.

Peace.

Steve

You have the right to rant and you have a means to broadcast your rant.

That makes you luckier than 99.9% of the rest of the world.

Whenever I start to feel that the world is closing in and I  think "what's the point", I remember those people who have it a lot worse than I do.  My shame makes me work on my bad mood.

That's when I reevaluate my life.  For instance, if no one in my family is sick or dying, if we have a pantry of food, if I have warmth in the winter and air conditioning in the summer (and the means to pay for both)  if I have yarn to crochet, a book to read and a TV to watch, LIFE IS GOOD!

I have a simple answer: the point is this moment ,these words. I hope they make you feel the wonder and the magic....and the love.

What is right in front of you is good enough reason Steve~ I know it is hard but keep at it.

I retreat at times, read and recharge, and then "something" always happens that gives me reason to go on. That something is there for us all if we choose to see it,feel it and believe.

Be Well ((Steve))

Steve--I second Witters in that you're not alone in that feeling.  I've been feeling inexplicably blue lately, but I've chosen to blame it on the weather, since I can't really figure out what it's about.

I second Audrey, too, though, in that I try to snap myself out of it by focusing on the little delights in life.  I guess I must need glasses, because I can't seem to focus today, but I am going to make tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches as a special dinner for my son tonight, because it's his favorite and it will make him happy.  I'm going to bake cookies later this afternoon, because my husband's been bugging me for some, and it will make him happy.  I'm going to try to help my friends out with their various games on Facebook today (like sending them Hatchlings or something) because it will make them happy.

I'm not going to change the world today, and will probably hardly even leave the house, but if I can't be happy today, I'm going to try to make other people happy today, and then live vicariously through their happiness.

In the meantime, thanks for letting me wallow with you awhile.  ; )  Feel better soon, Steve.

Honestly, I find it intriguing that someone could be writing this on the internet and not realize how much we've changed in the last century.

Maybe it's because I'm a child of the internet.  At 26, I literally "grew up" with computers.  My first computer was a 286 IBM when I was about 7.  It had an orange screen (or was it green?) and I could do some very simple things with it.  Of course, the 286 was much better and faster than previous PC's (commodore 64 anyone?).  As I entered 6th grade, the internet became more accesable to the average consumer - AOL & Prodigy were the two kings at the time.  Fast forward into high school, and then college, and I was beginning to converse with people all over the world.

I've had very insightful conversations from people in virtually every continent.  We all have world news at our finger tips, 24/7.  Children today are growing up in a more diverse landscape than their parents, and the internet, when used for the right reasons, is having a positive impact on them.

For the most part, we're living longer, healthier lives.  More people are educated and literate than ever before.

I see many positives in this world we live in, and I do see negatives as well.  For every good, there is a bad, however I think that we are working more to the goodness of humanity.

Dude... I feel you.  Sometimes it is so discouraging when you just run and run and run and feel like you're not getting anywhere.  This country and the government are dissappointing me everyday.  I hate the extremism, on both sides.  And I hate the fact that there are just two parties and we're split right down the center, with everyone yelling and screaming but no one listening.  It reminds me of the view.  God, I hate that show.

I just keep reminding myself that Life... Life shops at Costco.  Things come in bulk.  We get all the bad stuff at once and then all the good.
