Police 'shocked and appalled' after Australian leaves 5-year-old on car floor

AP news
DARWIN, Australia - An Australian man has been fined after buckling in a case of beer with a seat belt but leaving a 5-year-old child to sit on the car’s floor, police said Tuesday.

Constable Wayne Burnett said he was “shocked and appalled” when he pulled over the unregistered car Friday in the central Australian town of Alice Springs.

The 30-can beer case was strapped in between two adults sitting in the back seat of the car. The child was also in back, but on the car’s

“The child was sitting in the lump in the center, unrestrained,” Burnett told reporters Tuesday.

“I haven’t ever seen something like this before,” he said. “This is the first time that the beer has taken priority over a child.”

The driver was fined 750 Australian dollars — about $710 — for driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and for failing to ensure a child was wearing a safety belt.

if I were them I woulda let the kid drive ..sat in the backseat and drank the beer b4 it got hot!!

I'll drink to that!  I must admit, though, I haven't been sleeping since this was posted, and I've been worried sick that the beer didn't arrive safely at its final destination.

Hey, he didn't want it to get all shakin' up.... ever pop the top on one that was all shook-up.... kinda messy. The kid will be OK.... we used to sit in the back of cars... unrestrained on bumps and in all kinds of weird positions.... remember sitting in the backs of trucks when you were a kid..... now everybody gets in an uproar if your dogs in the back of a truck.... in fact soon you won't be able to have your dog in the car unrestrained..... if we really worried about it, how come we let our kids ride in school buses... no belts there !!   I don't know how we lived through the reckless 50s and 60s.

Gotta agree with pamg - he had to have confused the kid with the beer surely?!?!

Awwww, give the poor guy a break!  He was probably already drunk and confused his kid with the 30-pack and buckled in the wrong one!

I believe this should be filed under the category of Rednecks and Longnecks.  Was the beer okay?  Just kidding :)
