Illegal immigration is costly for country
When is enough going to be enough? Nancy J. Thorner Lake Bluff The issue of illegal immigration remains a sore spot with many taxpayers. A recent report by the Manhattan Institute found that the cost to the federal government by sanctioning open door immigration policies amounted to a startling $346 billion for fiscal year 2007. Also noted in the report is that each illegal immigrant costs taxpayers more than $9,000, while every household of four costs $36,000 in taxes. Crime, health care, and public assistance lead the list, but high on the list is the cost of educating the children of illegal immigrant parents. Here in northern Illinois, thousands of illegal immigrant children are flooding into school systems. In many districts the education of these children is breaking the piggy bank and sending budgets into the red. 10 comments from 6 users

When MOST people immigrate here MR LO, they're suppose to do so LEGALLY. Yes, we all get the whole USA is from somewhere else at one time or another, but they HAD to go thru the right channels to be here, again, LEGALLY. We just want the laws on the books, that are there already, to be UPHELD! posted by

We're actually doing our geneology right now. So far, it looks like our ancestors came from Leicestershire, England and immigrated to Lancaster, Virginia between 1653 and 1694. That was so long ago we don't really know why our ancestors moved here, or what struggles they had to go through. We're just going off of census records and links on geneology websites. It's really fascinating. posted by

I've been doing the same for a long time. In some cases you can actually see the Ellis Island document for your ancestors. Remember, when people carrying disease were kept from coming through until they were well? (Re-read my blog about mycobacterium fortuitum and chelonae, it didn't originate here) On another side, we are descended from the Cherokee. Hardly needed processing to get here in that case. posted by

When hard working American citizens are forced to pay more than 50-60-70% of their earnings to the government to support illegal immigrants, there is going to be a major revolt against the government. At some point, the government has to cut these people off or everyone will be completely dependant on the government. I guess that is what the Dems want though, so this is all part of the plan. Yeah, DG. We have a lot of Cherokee, too. MrLo--Life's not fair. No one is to blame that life's not fair. It's not your fault my Cherokee ancestors were pushed off their land and left to starve. It's not my fault the Sudanese are being pushed off their land and left to starve. Assigning blame for every world circumstance is a way to understand and accept what we are actually powerless about. People aren't angels, but they aren't devils, either. Looking at the world as shades of gray instead of black and white takes a lot of guts. posted by

We immigrated from Canada..............................legally. It took my mom several years and lots of studying to get her citizenship. She got help from NO ONE financial or otherwise! She knew more about US history then people who were born and raised in the US. I feel for people in other countries, however, the USA alone cannot save the world, nor should we. As for the slaves, they were sold into slavery by their OWN people and brought here against their will. I'm sure they would have much rather of stayed in their own country. For many years now they have had the opportunity to make a better life for themselves. Many choose to lay blame at someone else's door for their uneducated poverty lifestyle. Many Asian people immigrated here legally and you can almost bet few, if any, are on the dole and complaining about it. They will live 2-3 families to a house and pool their resources until they can each get a home of their own. Their children speak little or no English, yet within 6 months they can all speak enough to be understood in English - they do not and have not demanded ESL classes. Their children are almost always tops in their class. Of course there are those of every race who are lazy, irresponsible, and want a handout, all of that should be stopped.

God bless your mom, witters. She is the kind of immigrant that we just don't see anymore. The ones immigrating now demand that we cater to them in every way possible without wanting to put out any effort. Why? Because we let them. Why do we let them? Hell if I know....but I do know that eventually the handouts will have to end. I wonder who will bail out America when we go bankrupt.... posted by

50-60-70%? You need to fire your tax accountant. - I said when we have to pay.....as in the future....if the illegals are allowed to continue to hop the fence...
I understand people are upset because of the high cost of living in the U.S. But it's not the immigrant's fault. The cost of living is not the same as the cost of paying taxes. I can somewhat control my cost of living; living within my means and not beyond my means. I have absolutely no control over how much I pay in taxes. If you will read the original post, it says that illegal immigrants costed the federal government 346 billion dollars in 2007. Where do you think the money comes from? Me, my family, and other tax payers!!!!

MrLo: I'm not sure about this one, but I've heard that If a Japanese person comes here at retirement age, they can immediately start receiving Social Security and full medicare. Your above sentence also fits illegals, and yes, they are doing it. Of course there are those of every race who are lazy, irresponsible, and want a handout, all of that should be stopped. Part of my previous post, I believe, indicates I'm covering all the races, including Asians. I don't know how many questions were on my moms test and "back then" (1963) they did not get the answers in advance. My mom had to take night classes as she was WORKING to feed her kids. She also took the city bus to get to those classes as we did not own a car. She had to take a taxi (very expensive) to get home as the buss didn't run that late. I babysat the little ones. I got my citizenship because I passed the US Constitution test in Jr. High and I can tell you there were more then 10 questions and they sure as hell weren't as easy as the ones you listed! You evidently got off easy!
