Of course it depends on her age, but I wouldn't take any less than 500 shekels and 5 goats. But please be responsible and do not get too drunk before you sell her off (Genisis 19:31) posted by

Get in a time machine and go back a few thousand years when that would have applied. As for now, you're a pretty sick cookie to even joke about it. Move to Rwanda if you like that sort of thing. posted by

If the ante bellum period is any indication she could be worth anywhere from $500 to about $1,000 in 1850's dollars. It would depend on her age, her health, her physical stanima, her personality, her professional skills, her attractiveness, even the tone of her skin. If you take her to Africa or the Mid East, her virginity and potential for child bearing would be at a premium and command at least twice the price of a common slave laborer. Strangely, my teen daughter reminds me that she's a slave everytime I tell her to take out the trash or clean her room. posted by

Old Testament Law vs New Testament. Also the definition of slavery was very different. It is actually closer to indentured (sp) servant. posted by

Besides, the Christian Bible does contain the Old Testament. I think what Gube is pointing out is that many Christians are willing to say the Bible is literal when it parallels their beliefs, but it is allegorical when it does not. Can't have it both ways.

;-) I thought Gube was funny myself and clearly the thematic bent(with the exception of post nasal drip) is lost on some.

Gube, make some poor slob work for you for seven years like Jacob had to. Then get him all likkered up and marry off the homely daughter first. He can marry the cute daughter shortly thereafter, but he gotsta promise to work for you for another seven years (make sure it's all notarized, etc.). Be an evil taskmaster. Show no mercy. posted by

For those who are unfamiliar with it. Gubes question comes from an absolutely hilarious "Letter to Dr. Laura" from about 5 years ago. Here is the whole thing: Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a east coast resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative: Dear Dr. Laura: Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them: When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them? I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her? I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians? I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself? A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here? Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die? I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves? My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14) I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging. Your devoted fan, The part I like best is "Why can't I own Canadians?" posted by

I'm somewhat new to blogging, but I assumed that unless otherwise noted/credited, a person's comments are, for the most part, original to them. But seemingly, Gube wanted readers to think he thought of this question when in reality is was blatantly plagiarized...I know we're not in an on-line college class, but come on! The post would've been just as thought provoking if he had credited Dr. L, but now he'll live in the shadow of being called out by gopher. posted by

I've used quotes and admitted I don't recall the source. It's o.k. if someone doesn't think I'm too bright....but giving me credit for being smarter than I really am, those are scarey expectations I can't meet. posted by

Hey Gube, if you read all of Ch. 21 you'll see that God is watching out for the welfare and dignity of the servants. Remember that God said, "I am the Lord your God,who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other Gods before Me." That's the first of the 10 commandments. He brought them OUT of slavery. HE is still bringing people out of bondage today - I can testify to that! Servanthood is much different than the oppression of forced slavery. Back to the daughter: -Times were not so different back then. I'm sure that many young women longed to be "sold" to a hansome man or a rich man with sons. And if things didn't work out, she was to be redeemed by the family, not sold to foreigners. And not "set free" to be a vagabond adultress. P.S. Read Ex. 21:22,23 It's clear how God values life in the womb. posted by

Awesome. I clearly didn't read Leviticus closely enough. Was it one of the "begat" books? You know, Smezel begat Schmuckel begat Smackalot....? That would explain my foggy memory. Or was it the one that goes into minute detail what the temple should look like? That one reads like stereo instructions. And can I claim to be unclean all the time, or just seven days? Can I pick which seven days? That would help get my husband to stop bothering me. posted by
