Memory Makers
Yesterday was a "memory making" day. Since I had always been a room mother, I've been on some pretty good field trips (I'm sad to think that with budget cuts, most students no longer have the same opportunity ~but that's another post.) ~ Ronald Reagan Museum, La Purisima Mission, Camp KEEP... But yesterday was the best by far and I am convinced it was because of the educational philosophy I am currently embracing : home school. In the past, I experienced school field trip learning experiences with one of my children and I often thought how much my other child(ren) would also have enjoyed it. But now I have somehow found the balance of meeting my children's individual educational needs in a family setting. Yesterday we, myself, my 2 year old, my 11 year old, & my 13 year old (along with about 10 other families ~ 40 or so people) boarded a train and went to the Fresno Met. It was wonderful to experience the train ride and the museum as a family with other families who all had the same educational goal. I encourage you to take your children/grandchildren/any kid you love on a "memory maker". I must add that the Fresno Met has one of the best hands on art exhibits for children ~ Chagall. Share a "memory maker" you had as a child or one you made with your child(ren). 2 comments from 2 users

I've all ways been a believer in exposing children to the world outside a classroom. Not everybody, of course, can send take their kid on a trip to a national park or museum. I recall giving my kid a magnifying glass at age three (or was it four?) and it opened a fascinating world for her in the front yard. So did looking at the moon with binoculars. A trip to CALM or the Elk Preserve on Stockdale Hwy. is worth the time. I also read her assigned reading and discussed it with her. (I got to read or reread a few classics, if nothing else.) Participating in your child's education is too often put in terms of volunteering time in a PTA or district meeting without mentioning time at home can be an ideal setting. posted by

Not everybody, of course, can send take their kid on a trip to a national park or museum. Which is why school field trips, IMO, are vital to a well rounded education AND why it is a sad state of public education that they are becoming a memory.
