When parody crosses the line to inappropriate...
Some of you are probably going to wonder why it took us this long and why we let the situation go for so long, and for that, all I can say is sorry and hindsight is 20/20. But from now on, the creation of usernames/personas intended only to mock other B.com users is not okay. If you currently have one of these and have been using it, you will find it inaccessible. Any new ones will be taken care of in a similar fashion, and if users continue to try to get around the issue by creating new ones, they will find their original accounts affected by their actions as well. Parody is one thing, but creating sock puppets designed only to mock other users, even ones you disagree with vehemently, serves only to corrode and disrupt the community environment. I'm sure some of you have "I told you so" ready to go in the comment box, and others are ready to fight me on this, but this is the new rule. 21 comments from 13 users

It's a start, Jason. One I agree with. I hope there are similar plans on the board for personal attacks, stalking, sexual objectification, blatant homophobia and the like. posted by

HM, It`s a blog and you are retreating to censorship instead of having the intellect of the bloggers able to make their own judgments on the post.. I know the intelligence level of the majority here is quite limited but we have to rise above instead of lowering our self to their level..and they are entertaining in their ignorance...

Bakonative, I don't think it really adds to the discussion to rehash it; suffice it to say that this is the new rule. posted by

There have been some suspensions lately and apparently warnings, but nothing has been done to certain people who were allowed to use trash against me and others with no repercussion. If there are to be stricter regulations, I'd like to see it applied unilaterally and not just to one specific group. And one group HAS been targeted. In case no one noticed, the political posts today have almost all been from one group. Whether more have been suspended or have just chosen to get out of the sewer this place has become I can't say for sure. But I know one thing....I have seriously cut back on posting here not because of the national situation but because I'm tired of the constant garbage spewn here not only at the candidates but at the posters themselves. There's always that "if you think this blog is bad" mentality which I've used myself, but the fact is, I choose NOT to post on "bad" blogs. This one, though fractious, has at least been a fairly decent one...until recently There have been people coming here writing editorials rather than real blog discussions and it gets old. Those same people use all the trash talk they want with impunity and when others retaliate they get suspended. That delete button is really handy for covering tracks isn't it? I made a comment yesterday about people either needing to leave this blog or "buckle up" because it isn't getting any better. Today proved it is even worse than I thought. I've never been suspended or even had a warning that I remember so I'm not speaking for myself in this case. What used to be primarily a Liberal board when I started, then became more diverse, has now lost it's diversity and become top heavy with one mindset. As for the purpose of this particular thread, it's about time the ChicAs were stopped. Now if only the coddling of certain people on this blog could be stopped. Two in particular...and I have to wonder why THEM? There, now you've had MY editorial. Only I didn't copy and paste it. posted by

Nancy, you and I know each other, we've met and talked in person on many occasions. You know that when you use the passive voice here, as in " Now if only the coddling of certain people on this blog could be stopped. Two in particular...and I have to wonder why THEM?" you're really saying that I am coddling individuals on purpose, that I am treating individuals differentially on purpose. If that's really what you feel, as I know it is felt by others both currently and formerly in this community (including those who would describe themelves as both liberals and as conservatives, by the way, I do indeed get it from both sides), I wish you'd email or call me directly to ask me pointblank. To clarify, there were several parody-usernames that were affected by this decision, some of them quite recent in activity or registration, and all of them were targeting users that would be described as conservative. So this decision could be seen to be specifically affecting self-professed liberal users. Of course, that only means that some folks will see this as evidence of presumed anti-liberal bias (those of you who think I have an anti-conservative bias, I do indeed get the opposite accusation, and just as vehement and frequently), or, for those of a different bent, it'll be a case of "about time" or "too little too late" or even "this is just a token action to get us to stop complaining." I have repeated over and over that I don't make public proclamations about disciplinary issues--I don't trumpet who's on temporary suspension, who's gotten permanently suspended, who's on warning, etc. But it seems that without such assurances folks on all sides choose to assume that I'm acting out of bias against their "side," that because they don't know what's going on behind the scenes because I value users' privacy, that means I'm definitely not doing anything. And again, Nancy, this isn't directed only at your comment, because this sentiment is something I see far too often from others in violation reports and in comments. Again, you want to make sure I know about something? Hit violation report, copy and paste the comment into the violation report to protect against editorial revisionism, and then, communicate with me. Some folks act like I'm ignoring them if I don't react to their violation reports as they wish, but then don't communicate back when I do contact them. posted by

You're the one who chooses to strut around with your sexual orientation hanging out like some kind of trophy, Ray. Sfin doesn't attract the kind of broadsides that you do because he uses a reasonable amount of restraint. You refuse to, because you see yourself as some kind of victim entitled to special considerations. When things don't go your way, you run and cry to Jason, because even though you're 57 years old on your ID card, you still have a hell of a long way to go before you become an adult. posted by

A note to CatherineBaker re her question to Jason: I don't think so. Can you imagine being a kindergarten teacher (one sole teacher) with 250 squalling, flailing, fighting, biting, tearing, crying, squirming, screaming four-year-olds all doing all those things at once? That's Jason. And he deserves a raise for putting up with it. Shall I start a new blog name with a suggestion? (JUST KIDDING ALREADY, JASON!) Seriously, he has a tough job.

No kidding, ALICEN. : ) Just think, we read the blogs whenever we feel like it. Jason does it all day long--because he has to. It's his job. We can also ignore people who are jerks on these blogs, but those are the people Jason has to watch even more closely. If Jason doesn't get a raise, then we should start a fan club. We'll call ourselves the Jasonteers. Hmmm-Yeah, I think he'd prefer a raise. Haha! posted by

Open note to Jason, I'm in 100% agreement that you deserve a raise as this has to be an extremely thankless job. My being passive was the only way I could say what I thought without coming right out and saying that some of the bloggers, by name, have crossed the line may times with no repercussions. In my jobs I've always tried to work things out betwenn me and my co workers without taking it to management. I've tried to do the same thing here. You know me and you know how seldom I've ever hit that violation button. I don't like people who run to report every little offense but I've been tempted many times. I've put up with maggie following me around and mocking me for months now and have never said anything to you because he's careful not to use my name. It's obvious from his dialogue who he's mocking to the point that even Randomfactor asked him to back off the other day. I ignore a lot of what's said to me and about me but I have my limits. I also recognize that you can't post your disciplinary actions in public nor should you, and if I implied that you should, I apologize for that too. I stand by what I said about it being the conservatives who are being suspended and to my knowledge none of the liberals have been. Maybe I missed it. Some of them seem to have a way to insult, demean and deride people without using their name directly so I guess that's ok. I don't much like being told I'm stupid because I disagree with someone, or watch my faith being spit on but that's blogging and I try to take it along with the rest of the garbage. If I was out of line where you're concerned I apologize a third time. I suspect a lot goes on here that you don't see since reading it all would be mind numbing. I promise I will be more diligent in the future and when I see something I feel is out of line I'll report it to you. Apparently that's what others are doing. I did communicate with you on two occasions regarding one of the bloggers but do not expect you to divulge any action taken, or not taken as I realize that is privileged. I'm not happy with the turn this blog has taken and I believe I made that very clear. That, of course, is my problem and not any one elses. You of all people know how important this blog has been to me and how I supported it from my first day here. It bothers me that I can no longer recommend it to people I know who are Conservatives. posted by
