Strange ethnic dishes in Bakersfield
Last night we went to one of my local favorites for dinner, La Mina, the one on Oak and Palm streets. I can always count on that restaurant to have the best margaritas and refried beans.
Over the years, I have worked my way through nearly everything on the menu. Last night, I decided to try something new. Something that sounded kind of light. I ordered the veggie burrito. Now in my experience, veggie burritos have grilled vegetables inside, such as bell peppers and onions (like what you'd get with fajitas). Sometimes I have had summer squash, mushrooms, and other yummy veggies in my burritos. But last night was the worst veggie burrito I've ever had. What was in it? Cabbage. I ate a cabbage burrito. It was gross, which might make you wonder, "Why eat it?" Well the truth was, I had had a couple of margaritas and was very hungry and would have eaten anything at that point. Plus the salsa, guac and sour cream helped drown out the cabbage. But this morning I paid the price with an awful stomach ache. I will never eat a cabbage burrito again. Now this wasn't the first strange ethnic food I've eaten in this town despite my common sense. I once ate at the Rice Bowl. Once, being the operative word. I will never return. I ordered something very benign, thinking "you can't mess this up." It was the Chinese chicken salad. I expected lettuce, chicken, those crunchy toppings and some sort of soy-vinegar dressing. Well, I was right about the lettuce, chicken and crunchy toppings. But the dressing? The salad was tossed in ketchup. I ate a ketchup salad. Why, you might ask? Becuase I was hungry. And I'm a glutten. But I will never go back to Rice Bowl again. La Mina? I will still go there because I can still count on them for a strong margarita. But I can't believe I have now eaten a cabbage burrito and a ketchup salad. GROSS! 9 comments from 6 users

I DO NOT KNOW HOW LONG YOU HAVE RESIDED IN BAKERSFIELD BUT IT IS TIME TO TAKE A HIKE OUT. THE RICE BOWL HAS BEEN AROUND FOR 60 YAERS AND IT IS FAMOUS FOR ITS CHIX SALAD. I HAVE EATEN IT MANY TIMES AND IT DOES NOT HAVE A KKETCHUP DRESSING! IT IS SWEET AND SOUR AND DELICIOUS! HOW MANY DRINKS DID YOU HAVE BEFORE YOU ATE AT THE RICE BOWL? YOU NEED TO CUT THEM SOME SLACK. IN MY HUMBLE OPINION THEY ARE ONE OF THE BETTER RESTAURANTS IN BAKERSFIELD FOR QUALITY AND PRICE.

To each his own Bako..I prefer Bill Lee's. The Rice Bowl doesn't have the dishes I really like. Telling someone to take a hike out of town because they didn't like a restaurant is a little over the top. As much as I like Bill Lee's, there have been times when even they weren't up to their usual quality. It happens. posted by

Interestingly enough, there's a SWAT callout right now at the Econo Lodge behind La Mina. I wonder if the suspect ate lunch there :) http://www.bakersfield.com/... posted by

Well by golly..I'll bet that put a dent in THEIR after church late lunch crowd. I quit going to La Mina after the big immigrant boycott. It wasn't that they supported it and closed, it was that they only closed that ONE location and kept the others open. My feeling is if you're sincere about a cause you shouldn't be hedging your bets elsewhere.

Our other favorite Mexican restuarants include Anita's and Arizona Cafe (I think that's what it's called, over in Old Town). And for really cheap food we go to Los Altos on Chester. They like to give me the pig foot in the posole. I think they do it cuz I'm a guerra. I don't eat it, but I don't mind getting the "special prize." Great Mexican food is one of the reasons I love Bakersfield so much! (oops, I was just informed I am not a guerra (war) I am a guera (white girl) -- sorry for the bad Spanish!) posted by

I prefer Bill Lee's to the Rice Bowl. I will NEVER eat at the Rice Bowl again since the first and only time I ate there, my entire dining party got food poisoning. What freaked me out the most is that I was several months pregnant when it happened.

I have to agree about Casa Munoz, it is a long standing secret, they are the best in town.
