Well, after being a homeowner for a little over two years, I finally got to make use of my insurance policy today! I filed a claim for damage to my fence and roof due to the strong winds over the weekend. Yesterday my neighbor and I had to prop up the fence with tree stakes and poles. Then this morning as I drove out of my driveway, I realized the east side of my roof is missing about 1/3 of the shingles, and they are piled on the other side of the roof!

I sure hope it doesn't rain before I get someone out to fix the roof. I may have to get up there and attach a tarp somehow. I've never been on a roof before. Should be interesting.

If you have any pictures or stories of wind damage to your home, click over to www.bakersfield.com/yourwords and post them by clicking "Submit an article." We may choose to run photos and/or stories in The Bakersfield Californian.

I hope you all didn't suffer too much damage. Maybe my house got the worst of it!

Attention poets and wannabe poets: The Californian and Bakersfield.com are looking for a few good love poems to warm us up for Valentines Day.

So what do you have for us? A sonnet? A haiku? A full-on song? Click over to Bakersfield.com/yourwords to submit your poetry. And PLEASE include a photo of your loved one!!! We want to know who inspires the poet within you.

Here's one to get you started:

Violets are purple
Roses are thorny
I'm writing this poem
Because I'm so ________

HA! Get your mind out of the gutter...

CORNY. Because I'm so corny.

Hope your poems are better than that. Good luck and happy Valentines Day.
