ki6amd - > I am not a Starbucks drinker! -> Jaz McKay ... Liberal?
Jaz McKay ... Liberal?
Anyone else hear Jaz McKay on 1560 today? Who else wasn't shocked at his comming out of the closet?

For those that didn't hear, Jaz McKay came on air at noon today and told his listeners that he is actually a liberal and that his radio personality was faked for the job. For those who listened closely though, he had a familiar style in his speech when he came out. I won't point fingers, but I'm sure those who heard the show will recognize the words used by someone who blogs here @ Bakersfield.com

Wouldn't matter to me one way or anotherwhat Jaz does.  One thing that killed some silent movie starz careers was their  voices.  Jaz sounds like an untalented Sachmo without the charm of course.  Ralph Baily is also too gravely.  Mark Levin has a high pitched nasally voice and beside saying nothing that isn't sarcastic, Laura Ingraham is always talking through her nose.

I don't care what your political affiliation is, if you have a voice that raises the hairs on people arms, you've got a problem.  Thank goodness for my audio books for the commute home in the evenings.

It's true. Jaz McKay used to be on the air at KPFT, a Pacifica station in Houston. Pacifica is a radical left radio network. He has a very colorful history, to say the least. Google turns up some amazing stuff.

lol..radical left radio network. Anything that isn't conservative to some is radical left somehow. It's all a radical left conspiracy right?

Yup, Dusty.  Some people think Michael Savage is a centrist.

LMAO Tom..hush :P

Actually, Pacifica *IS*, or *WAS* fairly leftist*, at least compared with commercial stations.  Not very big, though.

*(Not that there's anything wrong with that...)

Its not radical is my point random..not in my guestimation any ways :)

Except that if you Google "Jaz McKay KPFT" or "Jaz McKay Pacifica" no hits come up. The More You Know.

I got deleted before, but I told you it was an April fools joke. Jeez, I've never been deleted before. This wasn't even an origional prank, Sean Hannity did it last year.

Michael Savage a centrist, Tom?  The guy who three days ago said God was on the side of the 9/11 hijackers, and rightly so?

(Ki6amd thinks he's being exceedingly clever by posting this blog and deleting anybody who mentions April Fools, Anon. Don't feel bad, he's just trying oh so hard to fool the grown-ups. Play along and let him feel good about himself for once.).

I for one am glad that Mr. McKay has finally come to his senses. Hopefully he can become a passionate, caring person, interested in everybody's basic human rights. I am glad to see that KNZR let him talk today, despite his change of heart. I can only hope that they will continue to find a place for this new liberal voice in their lineup and not cancel his show to replace him with yet another conservative braggart. Hip hip hooray!

I don't have much use (or any) for radio hosts who cross over the line just to make a buck..or a rating.  Scott Cox was another who mellowed his right wing show.  So be it...the only time I listen to him now is when he does the Friday Free For All and it's just to listen to them fight or when the commercials are on the other stations.  I agree with some of his local views but national?  No way now.

Again..thank goodness for audio books.  And Reba or Law and Order on TV.  Most anything is better than the talking heads.  Except Seinfield.  Even I can't go that far.

Sarcasm: it's whats for dinner! I don't listen to Mr. McKay's program, but I would have been interested to know he was doing this, just so that I could have listened to the callers of the program chewing him out. He probably didn't realize that a great side-benefit of his "joke" is that it will show in stark relief the intolerance and ignorance of at least a portion of his audience. For radio April Fools done right, listen to NPR today and this weekend. They always have a single story tossed in that is completely false and yet extremely plausible. Their past entries included the National Archives using vinyl to preserve modern digital recordings (because of the impermanence of bits and bytes), "vanity" zip codes for mail recipients to take with them when they move, and a company's proposal to project commercials on the surface of the moon using an earth-based laser. The pieces are all done with the regular high production values you would expect of a story, and are told in such a way that unless you're prepared for them, you might think they're real because they are so plausible. Mr. McKay's "trick" is so counter-intuitively transparent it boggles the mind to think about who may be fooled by it.

Mattloch, you said it. I WAS trying to fool as many people as possible.
Anon, sorry I deleted your posts, but I posted a quick response to your original posts, saying that I wanted to fool as many people as possible, and deleted the posts shortly after.

Yes Jaz FINALLY fessed up after 3 hours that he is NOT a liberal. I was hoping he'd hold off till monday, but he fessed up at the end of his broadcast. It was fun listening to the callers. Some obviously knew he was joking, others did not, but all of them contributed to the joke.

I'd have to say my favorite part was when he said he "experimented" with people of the same sex.

P.S. Mattloch of the callers who were happy with his "comming out", he asked if they'd like to come over and "smoke a bowl" with him, or other liberal stereotypes, which most were accepting of. There were a few callers who were upset and said they'd never listen to him again, but either he was mainly taking calls from liberals or, his usual fans turned off their radios.

I'm not overly fond of "April fools pranks" to begin with.    Guess I'm just a plodder.  I'd rather play tricks on people and when I was a bartender I got to do lots of that.  Not the same thing at all..one involves a lie you try to make people believe.  The other is a physical trick..like putting plastic spiders under a guys cigarette pack when you know he's an arachnaphobic.

Or replacing a guys Budweiser with Genuine Draft (in his pitcher) after he swore he could always tell what beer he was drinking.  Ahhh..sometimes I miss those days.

ki6..don't you dare delete this....I'm waxing nostalgic.

Hey, thats entertainment! As Bill-O says about Rush:

"I respect Limbaugh for basically making a success out of himself and putting on an entertaining program. But he's not a primary source of information, or shouldn't be," says O'Reilly. "He's an entertainer. … I'm a journalist who provides a program that is entertaining."

Of course I don't buy that Bill-O is a journalist any longer..but hey..if it makes him feel warm and fuzzy.

Nancy (among others), sorry for deleting your post(s). I won't delete them now, since Jaz confessed already.

Dusty, name calling has and always will get your comment deleted, no matter what political stance you take. If you want your comments to stay up, I suggest you stop starting your statments with "person xyz is such a _____."

I was listening to the whole program.  He had me fooled until he said he had another "confession" to make.  It was a funny joke, but I still wouldn't like him anyways if his "coming out" wasn't a joke, because either way he's still an extremist.  Either an extremist far-right winger, or the extremist far-left winger that he was playing as today.

The first step in a prank or hoax is that it be plausible upon first inspection. To choose such an extreme 180 is to destroy any possibility that it be true. A better thing for Mr. McKay to do would be to do his show as regular, but to choose a topic which usually elicits a certain type of caller or comment. He would then take offense to it, and present a moderate but contrary position. Then callers would call him with their more extreme and opposite opinions, to which he would offer an even further "left" but still moderate and rational argument. This could go on for hours, as callers got more and more exasperated with his comments becoming more and more extremely "left", with him being a raging "liberal" by the end of the show, ranting and raving against his now rabidly angry listeners / callers. Leave them hanging over the weekend (in this case), and let the hostile (and more than likely threatening emails) pile up. Come back on Monday starting where he left off on Friday afternoon, and present the messages left for him on email and telephone. Then he can "come out" and reveal the hoax, and revel in the gullibility of his audience. But then again, he's too clever for that approach, right Ki6amd?

Actually Mattloch, Jaz has mentioned (many times) his past socialist views. So the joke wasn't completely unbelievable. I will agree with you though... I would have liked to see him continue the joke over the weekend. One woman who called said she was so upset she was going to stop listening, but she would tune in on Monday to see if he kept his job, it would have been great to see her face Monday as he revealed his joke. One of the former candidates for sheriff (who he has talked with MANY times) even called in upset (Sure he might have been in on the joke, but it was still funny).

He actually made the build up to his "comming out" quite believable. I'm not going to list all the things he did, it's just one of those "you shoulda been there" moments.

Anyone ever listen to that talk show host out of (I believe) Los Angeles who fakes his calls by doing them himself?  He pretends to be outrageous guests and callers in voices that are very convincing.  The first time I heard him I believed it and went home ranting about it.  My grandson laughed his head off and told me I'd been "had."  That irritated me even more.

Nancy, please tell me you're not offended when Glenn impersonates his wife on his radio show. I will agree with you that some talk shows are pathetic... I can't stand most of the people I hear on the air, but I like listening to Beck, and McKay because while they do talk about the news, their show often includes quite a bit of comedy (as heard today). Hannity, Rush, O'Reilly, Levin, and Savage are too serious for me. I do listen from time to time, but not for extended periods. As for Inga Barks, and Scott Cox, I'd rather be poked in the eyes constantly than listen to them for longer than 30 seconds.

The only shows I like on 1410 would have to be Kim Komando (helps computer lusers), and Tammy Bruce (Taken from KERN's site as a description of her... "Tammy Bruce is an openly gay, pro-choice, gun owning, pro-death penalty, voted-for-President Reagan progressive feminist." ...Best of all is her latest book.)

ki6...You know by now I'm a huge fan of Glenn Beck and I think it's hilarious when he mimics his wife.  I'm not offended by the guy in L.A who does all the voices either...I think that's amazing.  I just wasn't too amused when I felt like a goof for falling for it. :-)

Supposedly the guest had a son with develomental disabilities and the "guest" talked about having a bad day so at the dinner table the "son" kept asking daddy questions til he lost his temper and backhanded the boy out of his chair up against the wall, etc.  He went on about his guilt yadda yadda and "callers" were sympathyzing at times and scolding him at others.  This went on through my commute and all I could think of is "why is this guy allowing this monster on the air?"  When I got home I was incredulously repeating all this when my grandson burst out laughing.  He knew about the program.  Well.. I'm a good sport and don't mind being the butt of a joke but I HATE being duped and falling for it.  I'm not usually gullible.  LOL.

By the way..Glenn had a survey of some kind a couple of weeks ago and had his wife on the phone.  She doesn't sound at all like he makes her sound.  Imagine THAT!     :-)

Yeah, Jaz is a liberal, Dick Cheney is good with a shotgun, and Rush Limbaugh is a climatologist.

Jaz still thinks the Marines who rape Iraqis did nothing wrong. In fact, according to him, there are NO criminal elements in the military. This is war, and everyone needs a little poontang.

And of course, if anybody doesn't sign off on that thinking, they are unpatriotic.

54 cents at a store!  MOM..don't be such a stick in the mud about April Fools gags. Does anyone remember in about 1985 when the Califirnian ran a story on April !st about a big oil sheik from somewhere or another named "Lirpa Loof" who was going to fund a new dome complex at CSUB? He was in Bakersfield much of the time on oil business and really loved the place and wated to do something for teh city. I was totally stoked until the next day when the paper revealed the hoax and Mr. Loof's name, which was "April Fool" backwards. I thought it was great even though I was sore from the hook in my mouth!
posted by NancyII on Mar 31, 2007 at 10:22 PM

I'm not a stick in the mud..I just like practical jokes better than April fool jokes.  Remember the time Dick got the desert numbers before we did and had us go along with the joke that Dick had a lower number than Tim?  Now THAT was hard !

Playing tricks is still better than making up stories....I never was any good at that.

This is behind the times but, I just now found this blog. To put the record straight on my time at KPFT in Houston that was in the summer of 1975. I was a volunteer who answered phones, empted waste baskets and learned how to operate a few pieces of radio equipment. I ran a few boards for a few hosts a couple of times and wouldn't be mentioned on any web sites associated with KPFT or Pacifica Radio. I was never on the air numb nut!! Puleeeeze!   Jaz McKay

Boy, with intelligent dialog like that, is it any wonder he's the fifth-highest rated radio host in his timeslot? Yup, it is the sharp comedic timing and timely subject matter (on display above, in spades) which makes his show such a joy to listen to, somewhere between the whine of a dental drill and the screech of fingernails across a chalkboard (and as close an approximation of those two things to boot!).
