True Love at a Honky Tonk in Oildale?
Location:
805 N Chester Avenue,
Bakersfield, CA 93308
Sometimes, in the last place you would ever think to look, you will find exactly what you need. Mention "Oildale" and its not likely that visions of wine and roses will come to mind, but maybe it should. Call it fate, destiny, or karma; you could even refer to it as happenstance, and regardless of whether you embrace or disregard such things, its nearly impossible to dismiss the concept of “meant to be” when you hear a story like this. It was a Monday night in April 2008 that a local musician met the girl who would change his life forever; and against all odds, it happened at the last of the original “Bakersfield Sound” honky tonk nightclubs, Rockwell’s Trout’s & The Blackboard Stages of Bakersfield. Every Monday night for the last 13 plus years, the legendary local singer/songwriter/recording artist Red Simpson performs at Trout’s Nightclub and Brett, the musician who “fate” decided to smile down upon, rarely misses a Monday night at the world famous local landmark, so it was not at all unusual that to have there that night, but he had no idea what fate had in store for him. Silvia Castro and her friend and band mate Meghan McCoy of the Heartache Valley Girls were on their way to Trout’s, coming all the way from Livermore just to see Red’s show. To say that he met Silvia at Trout’s that night wouldn’t be exactly accurate as their introduction actually took place at the Acoustic Songwriter Workshop that Rockwell sponsors every Monday and Tuesday night downstairs in the “Green Room” basement of Trout’s; “Underground Oildale” as he likes to call it. As it was, he was half way though a shaky rendition of “Little Ol’ Wine Drinker Me” when Rockwell came down the stairs with two absolutely adorable girls who asked if they could play a song or two and he gladly got out of the way. He thought that it was so cute that these two girls wanted to sing but he was surprised when they announced they would sing a song by Ferlin Husky, and he was bowled over when they not only played the song, but quite literally “ripped it up”. The girls performed a Rose Maddox tune next, followed up by a spot on version of “Tiger By The Tail.” He was speechless. Realistically, there just aren’t all that many people living right here in Bakersfield who even recognize names like Ferlin Huskey & Rose Maddox so it’s an incredibly rare treat to cross paths with gorgeous girls like these two who not only perform, but also appreciate true country music classics! He just had find out where in the world these girls had come from so as they made their exit up the stairs he was hot on Silvia’s heels. He asked them how they happened to be here in Bakersfield and they exclaimed that they had come to see Red Simpson, and that they both love Don Rich! He said, “Who Doesn’t?” He talked to Silvia for many hours by phone after that and they even played several dates together. Needless to say he became their biggest fan and booster, but little by little he found himself becoming even more interested in Silvia as a person than he was in her as a performer. Things got serious around July 4th 2008 when Willie Nelson’s Place was having their big Grand opening in Carl’s Corner TX and Silvia had mentioned how much she really wanted to go. Six days prior to the event, she asked if he wanted to go with her and after attending what he stated was “The best country music show ever”, they were already beginning to plan their September 6th wedding as they headed back home. ![]() Tony Booth, Red Simpson, Rockwell,Silvia Castro, & Brett Neal
Rockwell is honored to announce that he will personally host a September 7th wedding reception for the couple at the last of the original honky tonk nightclubs, the place where they met – Trout’s & The Blackboard Stages of Bakersfield. The public is invited to join in the celebration of what the groom describes as “the Monday night that turned out to be the best thing that has ever happened” to him.
If you, or someone you know, met their “one and only” at Trout’s, please call 661-399-6700 or send an email to Rockwell@troutsblackboard.com and tell Rockwell your story.

I was in the green room that very night and witnessed the young ladies as they performed for Red. They are extraordinarily talented. I had a feeling there was magic in the air, but I had no idea something like this would transpire. My congratulations to the happy couple. posted by

QRockwell, how would you like to record this with me?
The Night Love Arrived in the Green Room words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2009 Nu Bako Sound Recordings
It was a lonely April night in Oildale in the green room where we gathered for a jam there was Brett, Lloyd, Rockwell, Hank and others and Red was there to lend a helpin' hand we each played some covers and our own songs but this hootenanny'd never be the same after Heartache Valley Girls from Sacramento arrived as guests, and sang their hearts out, man
the night that love arrived in the green room you couldn've heard a pin drop in the place the night Brett and Silvia would start a fire deep inside their hearts, a twist of fate well they charmed Red Simpson and they kissed him but someone else was waitin' in the wings the night that love arrived in the green room the night the Heartache Valley girls stopped in to sing
well who couldn've known the night was magic the stars were aligned there underground who could've known that Brett would find there a reason for believin' in this town in the last honky-tonk standing in this small room with lights turned down and mics turned on were you there that night in the green room when the Valley Heartache Girls came with a song
she had him at hello but continued with a song by Ferlin Husky that they'd sing and a song sung for Red by Rose Maddox we didn't know that wedding bells would ring well I've been a lot of places in my lifetime but no place is as magical as this the night love arrived in the green room and a hootenanny turned to weddin' bliss (instrumental; chorus)
