Going back to college
With Cal State Bakersfield making the move to Division I, I'll be delving into the personalities behind the teams that make up the Roadrunners' athletic department to go along with interesting tidbits that don't make it into our daily coverage. Also check in for periodic blurbs on what's going on at Bakersfield College.

CSUB adds another point guard
The point guard position was a priority for Cal State Bakersfield throughout the offseason.
The Roadrunners added yet another point guard this week, signing Alex Johnson, who played for Vaughan Road Academy in Toronto.
“He is quick and he can score,” Cal State Bakersfield coach Keith Brown said. “He shoots the ball well, but the thing that’s most impressive about him is that he’s very good about knowing where, how and when to deliver the ball.”
The ’Runners now have three players who are capable of running the point. They signed Javarus Stewart out of Georgia Perimeter College in Decatur, Ga. and Donovan Bragg redshirted last season.
CSUB still has one scholarship remaining. Johnson joins a recruiting class that includes Stewart, Terrence Johns (Bakersfield College), Santwon Latunde (Cowley College), Ryan Brown (Oakton Community College) and Donald Lee (L.A. Pierce College).
As a senior, the 5-foot-10, 165-pound Johnson averaged 18.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 7.5 steals. Johnson was a four-year starter in high school.
“We think he can play right away,” Brown said. “I think he’ll push for considerable playing time.”
CSUB’s coaching staff found out about Johnson through Ro Russell, an AAU coach, who also coaches at Toronto Academy Prep.
Brown said Russell called Johnson, “the best point guard in Canada.”
Brown added that he liked Johnson’s maturity and leadership.
“He brings some of the same things Dwuan (Rice) brought to the table, but he’s probably more of a true point guard than Dwuan,” Brown said.
