Going back to college
With Cal State Bakersfield making the move to Division I, I'll be delving into the personalities behind the teams that make up the Roadrunners' athletic department to go along with interesting tidbits that don't make it into our daily coverage. Also check in for periodic blurbs on what's going on at Bakersfield College.

CSUB men's hoops adds point guard
Cal State Bakersfield added 6-foot point guard Javarus Stewart, who will play for the Roadrunners next season.
After a standout career at Cedar Shoals High in Athens, Ga. — he averaged 27.6 points and hit 41.6 percent of his 3-pointers through 29 games his senior year and was named the Athens Banner-Herald player of the year — Stewart played two seasons at Georgia Perimeter College in Decatur, Ga.
As a freshman, Stewart led the Jaguars in steals, averaging 5.7 per game. He was second on the team in assists at 8.8 and hit 57.4 percent from the 3-point line.
Stewart sat out last season to focus on school and joins the ’Runners with two years of eligibility left.
Earlier this week the university announced a partial schedule that included home dates against Oregon State and San Jose State. With a strong group of young players coming back, Brown continues to add experience through junior college players.
Stewart is the fifth junior college player to sign with Bakersfield, joining Terrence Johns (Bakersfield College), Santwon Latunde (Cowley College), Ryan Brown (Oakton Community College) and Donald Lee (L.A. Pierce College).
The ’Runners have one scholarship left and expect to have their recruiting class finalized soon.

I don't think the Runners will have any problems hitting treys this year. Now if some 6'11 280 lb 'rebounder from hell' could get picked up........;)

By the way Mason. You might let Jeff Evans know, (and he might already know), that Santa Barbara City College Head Coach Reggie Bolton is coming over to be the Defensive Coordinator for the Renegades. It's a good catch for the Gades, he's a great coach. He was just having a hard time getting kids to play there because of the obvious housing costs. I believe his wife is from here.

Also, for Gade fans. College of the Canyons, the Gades biggest rival in the Western States Conference, is going to continue it's slide that started last season. Head Coach Chuck Lyon, who quickly took the Cougars to a National title, has retired and the program is in disarray. Also, Moorpark, another good WSC team, has gone over to the other side of the Conference and won't be a Bakersfield opponent this season.

Within the next two seasons, a format change will occur in conference setups. There will be a super conference that will have two divisions that will include all the powerhouses including the Gades, Grossmont, El Camino, Saddleback, etc. etc. The winners of the two divisions will play one game instead of three to represent the South for the state title.

Thanks for the update on BC football. I'm actually covering the team now and we did get a story in on the former Santa Barbara City College coach coming to BC. Here's the link to that story. www.bakersfield.com/news/sports/junior_college/st ory/141598.html
I'll definitely keep an eye on what you mentioned, though.
Thanks again

I missed that Mason! You're right on top of it. The Renegades will be huge contenders this year. Enjoy the season.
