Going back to college
With Cal State Bakersfield making the move to Division I, I'll be delving into the personalities behind the teams that make up the Roadrunners' athletic department to go along with interesting tidbits that don't make it into our daily coverage. Also check in for periodic blurbs on what's going on at Bakersfield College.

With top teams dropping all around the Division I ranks, it will be interesting to see how the No. 1-ranked Renegades open tonight's game against L.A. Harbor. The Seahawks need some big plays early if they want to stay in this game. They are 2-0 in Western State Conference play, but the Renegades just have too many weapons.
It will be interesting to see who the 'Gades use as their No. 3 receiver with Dashan Miller out with a broken right arm.
Kickoff is about 10 minutes away. I'll post updates throughout the game on a cool night at Memorial Stadium.

Update:
Well — so much for the Seahawks jumping on the 'Gades early. BC leads 14-0 with 10:24 left in the first quarter.
On BC's first drive, quarterback Jacob Bower hit Brandon Banks for 37 yards, which set up a 2-yard plunge by Pat Patterson. Bower then hit Attrail Snipes for 44 yards on the 'Gades' next drive to set up Patterson's second score, a 10-yard touchdown.
L.A. Harbor has yet to force a BC first down.
The 'Gades needed just eight plays to score two touchdowns.
BC 14, Harbor 0

Update:

The Seahawks drove the ball into BC territory and decided to go for it on fourth-and-2. However, Dustin Bell broke up a pass intended for L.A. Harbor star Deryn Bowser. BC then marched down the field in four plays to score again. Patterson had runs of 12, 9 and 10 yards and Bruce Frieson scored from 47 yards out.
BC 21, Harbor 0

Update:

The first quarter is over and BC just scored again. Bower hit Snipes from 25 yards out. The 'Gades still have not been forced to convert a third down in part because Bower is 6-for-6. On the last drive, he went 3-for-3 with passes of 26, 14 and 25 yards.
Four drives, four touchdowns.
BC 28, Harbor 0

Update:
Well, L.A. Harbor scored its first touchdown of the game. But BC answered. Four plays, four rushed and a Patterson touchdown. The 5-yard score is his third of the game. The Seahawks still haven't forced a third down.
BC 35, Harbor 7

Update:
At halftime BC continues to have a comfortable lead. The Seahawks did kick a 33-yard field goal to end the half after a long drive that chewed up a bulk of the second quarter. However, the 'Gades have dominated much of the game. Bower finally threw an incomplete pass and, guess what, it came on third down, BC's only third down of the first half.
BC 35, Harbor 10

Update:
The fourth quarter just started and BC kept Harbor out of the end zone. Running back Justin Jackson has both second-half scores for BC with touchdown runs of 5 and 1 yards. This will be the last post before the game ends. I'm heading down to watch the fourth quarter from sideline.
BC 49, Harbor 10

Final update:

When it comes down to it, BC took care of business Saturday. Sure, the 'Gades were sloppy at times in the second half, but it's hard to maintain focus in a rout. The offense was as good as it's been all year and the defense made plays — it's always nice to see a defensive lineman get an interception.
The 'Gades get a bye next week, which comes at a good time. It gives players time to nurse bumps and bruises before BC heads to Canyons on Oct. 13.

Here's the box:

It's one thing to have a strong season, it's something entirely different to completely dominate the competition.
Sarah Norman continues to be impressive for Cal State Bakersfield, winning the  NCAA Division I Independent Player of the Week award for the week ending Sept. 23. Norman has won the award for three of five weeks so far in the 2007 season.
Against Saint Mary's Norman collected 32 kills in the match, a career high and a mark that ranks No. 2 on the Roadrunner all–time list for a five–game match. She also had 75 attack attempts versus Saint Mary’s, the No 5 mark on the CSUB list.
Norman leads all NCAA Division I Independent players at 4.60 kills per game for the season. She also ranks No. 1 in points per game, providing 5.18 ppg to the CSUB offense.
Norman shared honors this week with Providence College middle blocker Elizabeth Flynn. Flynn hit .323 while average 3.9 kills and 1.2 blocks per game in three matches last week.

Men's soccer note:
I went on the NCAA.org Web site this evening to check on goalkeeper Steve Trojanowski's stats. They're impressive.
Trojanowski led the NCAA in saves as of Sunday with 62, averaging 6.89 per game. The junior doesn't count in the official rankings and is listed in a reclassifying category, but the numbers are legit.

Dashan Miller has a broken right arm, according to BC football coach Jeff Chudy. Miller was scheduled to see an orthopedist Tuesday. Chudy said Miller is expected to miss at least four weeks, but he is not out for the season.
Miller has been clutch this year for the Renegades, making some big catches during the game-winning drive against El Camino. But, more than his ability to catch passes, the 'Gades will miss his blocking. At 6-foot, 190 pounds, Miller has helped spring big runs and free up space for Brandon Banks on bubble screens.
Without Miller, I would expect even better numbers from Banks and Attrail Snipes. It will also give sophomore Josh Little and freshman William Beathia more snaps as well.

Pat Patterson is listed at the No. 6 in the conference with 313 yards.
Jacob Bower is second in the WSC with 1,107 yards. He is also second in the conference in total offense.
Brandon Banks is No. 2 in the WSC in receiving yards with 431. Kern County product and current Canyons star Hayo Carpenter (Burroughs High) leads the conference with 549.
Arturo Villa is third in the conference in scoring with 40 points this season. He is 22-for-22 in extra points and 6-of-8 in field goals.
William Mahan is second in punting, averaging 38.9 yards per punt.
These numbers are impressive for just four games. I'm going to practice Tuesday, so I'll have an update on Dashan Miller's condition.

BC did sustain one injury which could prove costly in the weeks to come. Receiver Dashan Miller went down with an elbow injury in the second quarter. He almost made an incredible catch on the play.
"He's a big part of our success," BC coach Jeff Chudy said. "Hopefully, it's just going to be a sprain."
The photo to the left is of the play.

It's about an hour and a half before kickoff and I'm getting ready to head up to Memorial Stadium. Since it rarely rains in Bakersfield, I asked Jeff Evans when the last time he'd seen rain during a BC football game.
Through 28 years at the Californian, Evans couldn't specifically remember a rainy day.
While the rain had stopped the last time I went outside, the field will be wet, but I don't think it will impact the 'Gades much.
East L.A. has lost its last eight games and if it's raining, BC will just have to keep the ball on the ground. After 288 rushing yards against L.A. Southwest, the 'Gades don't mind lining up behind the offensive line and chewing up yards and clock.

Update:
It's a nice evening here at Memorial Stadium, not nearly as damp as I thought it might be. East L.A. is wearing uniforms that look like the New York Jets, however, their nickname is the Huskies. It's about four minutes until kickoff. The 'Gades will receive.

Update:
BC's offense started the game with a steady dose of Pat Patterson, but Jacob Bower threw an interception on his first pass attempt. Dustin Bell got the ball back for the 'Gades with an interception of his own in the end zone.
Bower then made up for his mistake with a 61-yard bomb to Attrail Snipes, who blew past the coverage.
BC 7, East L.A. 0

Update:
The 'Gades just added a 21-yard field goal by Arturo Villa. Then, Bell picked off a pass for a 35-yard touchdown and now the 'Gades are firmly in control of both sides of the ball.
BC 17, East L.A. 0

Update:

The Huskies scored late in the first quarter to cut into the 'Gades' lead. Villa then tacked on his second field goal of the night on BC's first drive of the second quarter.
The 'Gades are moving the ball, but only have one offensive touchdown. East L.A. is playing a much better first half than L.A. Southwest put together last week.
BC 20, East L.A. 7

Update:
Arturo Villa is having himself quite a game. The freshman kicker is now 3-for-3 in the game with field goals of 21, 34 and 38 yards.
BC 23, East L.A. 7

Update:
Sometimes the defense wants to score touchdowns, too. Keith Thompson became the second BC defensive back to return an interception for a touchdown with a 34-yard return. The Gades offense scored its second touchdown of the game when Ben Estill dove in from 4 yards out.
BC 37, East. L.A 7

Update:
Well, BC wrapped up the first half with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Bower to Josh Little. That give the 'Gades 27 points in the second quarter. It was as if BC took it personally that East L.A. scored at all. It's officially a blowout now, and I would expect to see the backups get most of the snaps in the second half.
BC 44, East L.A. 7

Update:
The scoring has slowed in the second half. Greg Williams scored the only touchdown of the third quarter.
BC 51, East L.A. 7

Final update:

Jeremy Ramirez returned a fumble 68 yards for the final score of the game. BC's defense was impressive until the end, stopping the Huskies on the 1 on fourth down with just a few seconds left.
BC 58, East L.A. 7

Here's the box:

Syracuse really struggled out of the gates this season, but the Orange upset Lousiville today 38-35. It was a good win for BC product and Syracuse coach Greg Robinson and it was thanks in large part to a big day by another former Renegade.
Taj Smith had a huge day for the Orange, catching four passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns.
Entering Saturday's game, the Cardinals had won 20 straight at home.
Smith scored the first touchdown of the game, a 79-yard strike from Andrew Robinson. Smith, who averaged a little more than 43 yards per catch, later scored on a 60-yard pass from Robinson.
It's nice to see that offense get going. It's good for Smith. It's good for coach Robinson.

High School
Bakersfield
(vs) Centennial
Liberty
(vs) Foothill
Highland
(vs) Garces
Tehachapi (vs) Stockdale
Golden Valley (vs) East
College
South Carolina (vs) LSU
Georgia
(vs) Alabama
San Jose State (vs) Utah State
East L.A. (vs) Bakersfield College
Washington State (vs) USC
NFL
San Francisco (vs) Pittsburgh
Indianapolis
(vs) Houston
Miami (vs) N.Y. Jets
Arizona (vs) Baltimore
Cincinnati (vs) Seattle
• My picks in bold.
Well, since other members of the staff are blogging their picks, I figured I'd join in.
In the high school games, I think Bakersfield High is a lock over Centennial. I know the Golden Hawks are having a good season, but the Drillers are having a special season. I picked Liberty over Foothill, but I'm starting to doubt that pick. I think Dennis Manning is doing a great job with the Trojans and, while the offense is coming around, Liberty still isn't the team it will be by end of the season. Highland gets things rolling against Garces as does Stockdale against Tehachapi. Andre Smith continues to be a beat against Golden Valley.
College: East L.A falls to 0-4 against the Renegades who trucked an athletic L.A. Southwest team last week. LSU is playing well, so I'm going with the Tigers and, with the flip of a coin I went with Georgia over Alabama. I would never pick Utah State after following the lowly Aggies when I lived in Idaho. While I'd like to take Washington State over the Trojans, I feat the Cougars are drastically overmatched.
In the NFL, I like the Steelers and Colts. My fantasy team would like Thomas Jones and the Jets to get going. Baltimore's D takes care of the Cardinals and the Seahawks score at will against the Bengals.

It took back-to-back-to-back solid efforts, but Jacob Bower was named one of four Western State Conference Players of the Week, annouced by J.C. Grid-Wire/JCfootball.com Thursday.
Bower threw for 188 yards and completed 11-of-16 pass attempts. He also threw for three first-half touchdowns.
Pat Patterson and Dashan Miller were also included in the conference's highlights of the week. Patterson rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns, while Miller caught five balls for 115 yards and a touchdown.
The Renegades next play host to East L.A., which is 0-3 and has lost eight straight dating back to last season, at 7 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Stadium.

One of the perks of the move to Division I is that Cal State Bakersfield appears in the preseason magazines. I was doing a little Fresno State research today and picked up Lindy's and Athlon.
The first thing I did was check for CSUB and I was impressed to see the school listed.
In Athlon, the Roadrunners get a paragraph, which mentions the 25 straight winnings seasons and the loss of their top three scorers: Dwuan Rice, Carl Damus and Zeke Andrews.
It also mentions the addition of Terrence Johns from BC.
In Lindy's, Independent schools get more ink, but there's not a whole lot more in terms of detail.
It also mentions Johns and Ryan Brown, who played for Oakton Community College.
But it mentions three redshirt freshmen one of which is gone and one who doesn't exist.
Curry McKinney is no longer on the team and I've never heard of a player named Geoff Brow. I can only assume they meant Cory Brown, who should be a leader for the team this season.
I think it's good for the program that it is now included in these preseason publications. It's all part of the process, like playing an impressive, if daunting, schedule and seeing the team in video games.
There's some interesting info the magazines about some of CSUB's opponents and I'll post more on that later.

During a quick, well, it's never really quick when you are driving down Rosedale. But during a stop at the Northwest Promenade before heading to the paper today, I noticed one of those new electronic billboards with a big picture of a host of Renegades gang-tackling an opponent. On the right side of the billboard, it noted BC at the No. 1 team in the country.
I had to slow down and check it twice to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. It's a pretty  cool advertisement for the team and the school.

After looking at the 52-6 score, the first thing people are going to say is that L.A. Southwest wasn't any good.
Well, it's more that Bakersfield College is just that good. L.A. Soutwest had enough athletes to make plays and score points, but the Renegades refused to let the Cougars get anything going.
The hit Mark Johnson put on Kurious Alexander left the quarterback feeling a bit curious as he went 0-for-5 with an interception during a short outing. Torrey Harkness came in and played most of the game for L.A. Southwest. Harkness wasn't quite as athletic as El Camino's Boo Jackson, but he was quick. He produced a few first downs, but for every positive gain, BC produced a sack. On 20 carries, Harkness had just 21 yards.
The 'Gades finished with eight sacks which resulted in 55 yards in the wrong direction for the Cougars.
The D-line continues to be as good as advertised and the offense makes the game look easy.
Jacob Bower played well, but I was also impressed with Dustin Powell. He completed 3-of-4 passes in relief, including a 28-yard strike to Attrail Snipes.
The strangest moment of the afternoon was the postgame cheer. Johnson's teammates started calling for Otis.
Apparently, L.A. Soutwest players were calling him Otis because he looks older than he is.
Aaron King and Ismail Sadrud-in claimed to have a hand in the nickname, creating a story that Johnson's real name is Seymour Otis. While, their story is full of holes, one thing is certain. After the kind of night Johnson had Saturday, the Western State Conference will certainly see more of Johnson as the season advances.
The 'Gades are back home this week, playing East L.A. in Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m.

It's early in the second quarter and Bakersfield College is up 14-0. I had some power problems early in the game, so I couldn't post earlier.
The Renegades scored on their first two possessions. Jacob Bower hit Brandon Banks on a slant from 16 yards out and Pat Patterson scored a 3-yard touchdown.
The BC offense is having little trouble moving the ball. The Cougars, on the other hand, can't get much done when they have the ball. On L.A Southwest's first offensive play, outside linebacker Mark Johnson came off the line untouched and planted Cougars quarterback Kurious Alexander.
L.A. Southwest has yet to pick up a first down.
BC just scored on a 7-yard pass to Attrail Snipes. Before that, Patterson had carried the ball five straight times.

Update
At the half, the 'Gades are up 35-0. L.A. Southwest still does not have a first down, which is impressive. The Cougars have some athletes, but BC continues to bring constant pressure.
The 'Gades put up 21 points in the second quarter. After Snipes' touchdown, Patterson scored for the second time from a yard out. Then, Dashan Miller caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Bower, the freshman's third touchdown pass of the day.
Bower has been impressive once again, spreading the ball around to his playmakers. Freshman running back Bruce Frieson is also playing well.
With a comfortable lead, I will be curious to see how long BC keeps its starters in.

Update
After three quarters, BC led up 42-6.  L.A. Southwest came out and drove 62 yards for a touchdown to start the second half. The 'Gades started the third quarter with much of their second unit on the field.
Backup quarterback Dustin Powell led a third-quarter touchdown drive that was capped by a 1-yard plunge by Ben Estill.
The 'Gades just added an Arturo Villa field goal and lead 45-6 early in the fourth.

Update
OK, just got back from Los Angeles. The final score was 52-6 after the 'Gades scored a late touchdown.
I'll have a recap later, but I've got to finish my story.

Box score

Fresno State basketball coach Steve Cleveland will be in town Sept. 19 to speak about the beginning of the Cal State Bakersfield-Fresno State rivalry.
Cleveland and Roarunners coach Keith Brown will speak during a noon luncheon on the Rabobank Arena floor.
The two teams meet to open CSUB’s Division I home schedule on  Nov. 17
The luncheon is in conjunction with the university’s annual “Select-A-Seat” open house, during which people can choose their seats for the upcoming season.
Admission is free for the open house, but luncheon tickets are $16 and must be purchased in advance at Russo’s Books in the Marketplace, online at www.gorunners.com or by calling the CSUB Athletics Ticket Office at 654–BLUE.

The open house will feature live radio remotes with contests and giveaways throughout the day. Fans purchasing season tickets will receive a free game day T–shirt tailored for the Nov. 17 season–opener. Also, anybody who makes a new season–ticket purchase (two or more) on Sept. 19 will be entered into a drawing to receive their tickets for free.

In desperate need of a basketball fix, I stopped by to watch Cal State
Bakersfield's workout Thursday.
I was immediately struck by the depth and athleticism of this year's team.
The Roadrunners filled out their roster with players who can score. During
one shooting drill for guards, the group went a whole rotation without
missing a shot.
It's going to be interesting to watch the development of this team. With the
exception of Cory Brown, a redshirt freshman who is a lock to start in the
middle, positions are up for grabs.
With players lined up three deep, the competition should foster an
environment that improves the level of the team across the board.
These guys will be fun to watch. The transfers are getting settled and the
returners look ready to get started.
I talked to Javarus Stewart, a junior out of Georgia Perimeter Junior
College, and he said he was anxious to get the season started.
For players and fans, there is excitement about the uncertainty.
It's hard to project with so many new faces, but there was a lot of talent
on display Thursday, which should lead to some intriguing matchups once the
season starts.

During my trips out to practice this week, I've noticed quite a few guys nursing bumps and bruises on the sidelines.
In football, minor injuries are just part of the game and BC coach Jeff Chudy said everybody should be healthy enough to play.
However, here are some of the guys gingerly moving through practice.
Running back Pat Patterson had an ice pack on his foot toward the end of practice Wednesday.
Former Liberty teammates Devin Pruett and Brock Mueller both spent some time watching practice, giving them enough time to say hello to Patriots' coach Chad Provensal.
Brandon Banks and Daron Mackey sat out Wednesday as well.
It's always a juggling act for coaches to get players enough practice reps to keep them sharp, but give them enough rest to keep them healthy.
During my preview interviews defensive lineman Daniel Calvin said something that doesn't fit in anywhere in my main coverage, but I felt the need to include.
He said the Renegades are praying for the Buffalo Bills' Kevin Everett, who suffered a severe spinal cord injury during a game against the Denver Broncos Sunday.

The new J.C. Grid-Wire top 25 poll is out and Bakersfield College is ranked No. 1 in the country after beating El Camino 33-31 Saturday.
The Renegades were ranked No. 2 last week before the upset of the No. 1 ranked Warriors on a last-second touchdown catch by Seth Damron.
I don't have the full poll, but I'll try to track it down tomorrow.

As I walked up to the press box, I bumped into a group of current and former Cal State Bakersfield basketball players. Dwuan Rice said it is Zeke Andrews' first football game.
He picked a good one to attend.
Kickoff is about six minutes away. The Renegades just ran out onto the field.
El Camino was whooping and hollering during its pregame warmup. I watched Brandon Banks a little during pregame and he doesn't seem to be limping. He looks ready.
Check back for updates throughout the game.

Update
Arturo Villa put the 'Gades up 3-0 with a 32-yard field goal. BC kept the ball on the ground early in its first drive. Attrail Snipes appeared to have a touchdown reception on first-and-10 from the 32. He caught a pass in the end zone with a defender draped all over him. He was ruled out of bounds, but there was a pass interference penalty on the play.
BC 3, El Camino 0

Update
El Camino recently converted on fourth-and-three from the 22 yard line. Patrick Hill picked up five yards on the carry. Three plays later, Tavares Pressley scored from 4 yards out.
Warriors quarterback Boo Jackson is tough to stop. He converted two third downs on the drive, once with his arm and once with his legs.
El Camino 7, BC 3

Update
BC just made a costly mistake that resulted in a touchdown. After stopping the Warriors, the 'Gades were flagged for roughing the kicker.
El camino then scored a touchdown two plays later.
El Camino 14, BC 3

Update
It's officially a shootout after 24 first-quarter points. BC scored late in the quarter when Snipes caught a 65-yard bomb from Jacob Bower. The 'Gades just stopped El Camino, which just had first-and-goal from the 5. After a short run by Pressley, BC came up with two big sacks from Aaron King and Mark Johnson that resulted in a loss of 30 yards.
The Warriors punted and BC will get the ball back.
El Camino 14, BC 10

Update
When Snipes and Brandon Banks are on the field, anything is possible. Banks just caught a 45 yard touchdown pass from Bower, making to two moves to juke defenders for the score.
BC 17, El Camino 14

Update
Pressley just scored his second touchdown of the game to give the lead back to El Camino.
El Camino 21, BC 17

Update
Well, the game has lived up to its billing. It's was a high-scoring first hald with El Camino taking a 21-17 advantage into the break.
The key for the 'Gades it to find a way to slow down Boo Jackson. The quarterback is slippery. He's evaded BC all night and made plenty of big plays. He threw for 213 yards and a touchdown in the first half.
Bower, meanwhile, has thrown for 132 yards and two touchdowns.
The game is going to come down to who can make more big plays and stopping Jackson.

Update

The second half didn't start like BC would have liked. After stopping El Camino on its first drive, Bower threw an interception deep in the 'Gades' own territory. Jackson then threw an 18-yard touchdown pass.
El Camino 28, BC 17

Update
BC is back from the dead once again, and Banks is the reason why. On BC's last scoring drive, Banks caught a 34-yard pass, got hurt, left the game, came back and caught a 29-yard touchdown pass. Bower overthrew Banks. Lamar Chapman had an interception in his hands, but he bobbled it, which allowed Banks to snatch it out of the air and give the 'Gades some life.
El Camino 28, BC 24

Update
Villa just kicked a 37-yard field goal as the 'Gades inch closer.
El Camino 28, BC 27

Update
James Cullen just kicked a field goal for El Camino, which means the 'Gades need a touchdown in the last 7:05 to take the lead. I have to run down to the field in a few minutes, so this will be my last update before the end of the game.
El Camino 31, BC 27

Final update
What a finish. I watched the final minutes on the sidelines and was standing in the end zone when Damron caught the game-winning touchdown pass as time expired. It was an amazing finished, a gutty effort by team with a penchant for the big play. It's hard to mention all players who made plays in the game story, so I didn't get to mention the defense much, but it stepped up at big moments. The last stand late in the fourth quarter was a testament to not giving up.
What a game.
I'm going to head up to BC on Tuesday for a follow up with Damron. There should be something in the paper on Wednesday.
Final score: BC 33, El Camino 31

Interesting that BC is only ranked No. 3 in the state in this poll, but No. 2 in the nation by J.C. Grid-Wire.

I have a feeling Banks will be a first-team receiver by the end of the season. I also think Snipes, Daron Mackey, Aaron King, Mark Johnson will figure into this by the end of the year.

First team
DL — Daniel Calvin

Second team
All purpose — Brandon Banks

Third team
WR— Attrail Snipes

Jacob Bower put on a show for Bakersfield College during the 35-23 victory over Reedley Saturday.
It was impressive to watch Bower spread the ball to his talented group of playmakers. In the press box, most people thought Bower's 436-yard passing effort was a Renegades record, but that couldn't be confirmed after the game.
I should have more on that next week.
Aside from the interception that was returned for a touchdown, Bower was incredibly sharp. He found Brandon Banks on short and long routes. Bank caught 13 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns. Attrail Snipes made his share of player: six catches for 130 yards and a touchdown.
Bower was also impressive running the football. He's a big guy at 6-foot-4, 235-pounds, but he runs well (46 yards on seven carries Saturday).
One of the things that might have gone unnoticed against the Tigers was Dashan Miller's performance. Not only did he catch five passes for 65 yards, but his blocking downfield cleared space for some of Banks' big runs.
On defense, the usual suspects, Daron Mackey, Aaron King and Mark Johnson, made plays. But I was also impressed with cornerback Keith Thompson, which isn't much of a surprise.
The 'Gades seemed pleased with the outcome, but I expect the coaching staff to be extremely animated during practice this week. BC plays host to El Camino, the defending state champs, and it should be a memorable game.
As soon as the Reedley game ended, the team moved on to El Camino.

Bakersfield College got off to a fast start behind its speedy receivers. Brandon Banks put the Renegades up 7-0 with a 36-yard touchdown reception. It was a short pass and Banks put on a series of moves before landing in the end zone.
Quarterback Jacob Bower has completed his first eight passes and looks sharp. The defense opened with some vicious hits by Kevin Eldridge on a kick return and outside linebacker Mark Johnson on Reedley's first play of the game.
BC led 7-0 after one.
Brandon Banks just scored caught his second touchdown pass of the game, a 60-yard strike on a post with 14:07 left in the second quarter.

Update
At the half, the 'Gades lead 14-2. BC running back Ben Estill was tackled in the end zone to put Reedley on the board with the safety. Aside from a few big plays, the 'Gades' defense is slowing down the Tigers. Johnson, Daron Mackey and Aaron King have been all over the field.
Late in the half, Reedley quarterback Darius Reynolds went down with and injury. He provided a bulk of the Tigers' big plays with his legs, in fact, he was hurt at the end of a 31-yard run.
Banks had a huge half with six catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns. However, he did fumble twice. On the second one, it looked like he was down before he fumbled, but the ball was given back to the Tigers.

Update No. 2
Reedley cut BC's lead to 14-9 in the third quarter with an 82-yard interception return by Maurice Harvey.
Banks caught a 44-yard pass to end the third quarter and spark the 'Gades' offense. But the drive stalled and the Tigers blocked a 29-yard field goal early in the fourth.
The score is still 14-9 with 13:19 left in the fourth.

Update No. 3
Pat Patterson just scored on a 2-yard run to put BC up 21-9 midway through the fourth quarter.

Update No. 4
Reedley just scored on a 74-yard touchdown pass from Darius Reynolds to Jameel Hobson. The score is 21-16 with 6:47 left to play.

Update No. 5
BC is up 28-16 now after a 56-yard touchdown pass from Bower to Snipes. The scoring has exploded for both teams with three touchdowns in 1:40 seconds.

Game over
BC holds on for a 35-23 win in a wild game that featured five fourth-quarter touchdowns.
And, for the record, it was brutally hot out there.

I guess Cal State Fullerton is the place for upstart programs to find new coaches. First Bill Kernen takes over at Cal State Bakersfield and now George Horton is leaving to become the head coach at Oregon.
Here's the AP story.

EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon announced Saturday that it has hired former Cal State-Fullerton baseball coach George Horton to restart its varsity baseball program.

Horton has coached the Titans for the past 11 seasons, and has taken the team to the College World Series six times. His team won the national title in 2004, and he twice has been named national coach of the year.

"To see what he has built and accomplished at Cal State Fullerton is incredible," Oregon athletic director Pat Kilkenny said. "Coach Horton has put together an elite program and has posted an outstanding record on the field of play as well as develops student athletes both as players and individuals."

Oregon has not fielded a team in 26 years and is the only Pac-10 school without one. The school announced two months ago that it would revive baseball, drop wrestling and add competitive cheer.

Horton emerged from a field of several candidates that included Dave Brundage, a former Oregon State player and manager in the Seattle Mariners system and now with Atlanta, Vanderbilt's Tim Corbin and University of California-Irvine's Dave Serrano.

He signed a five-year contract with the school. He will earn a base annual salary of $150,000, and will made an additional $250,000 a year that the university said was in part derived from radio and television contracts, as well as shoe and athletics contracts with Nike.

Titans' assistant coach Jason Gill will join Horton's staff at Oregon.

Oregon plans to begin play with limited scholarships in 2009.

Taj Smith got some face time on ESPN during Syracuse's game against Washington Friday night.
Smith made a catch on the sideline during the third quarter that was reviewed in the booth. While the play was reviewed, commentators provided a synopsis of Smith's life story. It was  a nice moment for Taj.
