Poison, Perverts and the Devil, Oh My!
I'm a skeptic and never been too fond of Halloween or the idea of giving the neighborhood kids, who annoy you all year round free treats for tearing up your yard and ringing your doorbell off the hook/hollering at you and disturbing the dogs. I've noticed a lot of genuine fear surrounds Halloween, and the adults are more afraid than the children. I remember all my unwrapped candy being taken away as a child and the caveat about poison candy. Later it was gangs of devil worshipers sacrificing babies, and today it's sex offenders. I liked the devil worship myths best (all those sacrifices--scary!). So I did a little research and found a few answers to the things that scare parents more then ghouls and goblins. A preview...little need to worry about poison, razor blades, perverts, or (my favorite) baby sacrificing Manson wannabes. What should you worry about? Cars, drunk drivers, and general carelessness. Here are the links: Poison candy: http://mommymythbuster.word... Perverts: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id... Perverts2: http://www.lynn.edu/about-l... A general list of myths. I love the one about being mummified and set on fire: http://www.salon.com/life/f... Poison candy: http://chicagoist.com/2009/... Halloween isn't Satanic: http://altreligion.about.co... Your pets: http://tucsoncitizen.com/sa... Another general list: http://www.life123.com/holi... Cool website for parents: http://mommymythbuster.word... Still, I think it's prudent to supervise children and to take away all the best candy, just in case it is actually poisoned by sex offending devil worshipers. Devil worshipping pervs (secretly read: I) prefer the Kit Kats and Special Darks... 13 comments from 7 users

Naturally, I am kidding--I'm not a devil worshipping perv, I just didn't write clearly. But, it's a good excuse as any. I want mine to be safe, so I have to take the candies the baddies are most likely to poison (which happen to be my favorites)! posted by

We keep the candy begging to a minimum. Once we get home, the candy bags are dumped on the living room floor and gone through - I take out first, for dada, all those little mini snicker bars, to save time . : ) --virgil posted by

virgil, I would think out where you live it's kind of scary to take your daughters out trick or treating. Or do you drop them off in Seven Oaks for a couple of hours to get all the good candybars? posted by

Actually it is a holiday started in what is modern day Ireland and UK by the Celts some 2,000 years ago as an end of harvest ritual and to remember the dead. Oct. 31 was Samhain when they believed the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. A big bonfire where they burned crops and animals as sacrifices to Celtic deities, they dressed up in animal skins and furs and danced around the fire, set a place at the dinner table for dead relatives and left treats and candles out along the streets so the spirits could find their way back to the other side. I have also read that the treats were so the bad spirits would not harm them on the way back to the other side, to appease them so to speak. The Catholic church didn't intervene until 800 AD or so and tried to turn it into a religious holiday they celebrated around the same time of year. It took on different faces from then on. posted by

All the calories and sugar from the candy are probably the biggest general danger to kids on Halloween, in terms of one that affects the widest number of them. posted by

If you are a concerned parent, conciencious about child safety like I am, then follow my example: Take the goody bags away from your children and "randomly" sample them to make sure it is not poisoned. I understand kit-kats and reeses are a favorite target of pervs. Yeah, it's a dangerous job and puts your life on the line, but aren't you precious little ones worth it? posted by
