What do you Obama supporters think, is it Wes Clark for VP?

Wes Clark has been surging on Intrade recently, getting close to Bayh, Biden, Sebelius, and Kaine in the political futures choices for 'who Obama should pick for VP.

FiveThirtyEight has a story up in which the author asks, with "the unscripted drama in the Caucasus also serves as a thought experiment of sorts, especially as it regards Barack Obama's VP selection. Would Obama be better off if he had, say, General Wesley Clark flanking him right now?

In this case in particular, the Obama side has some good arguments to make about Georgia -- for instance, that our moral authority to condemn Russia for its actions is undermined by our own invasion of Iraq, and that our tactical position to place our footprint in the Caucasian theater is undermined by the number of troops we have committed to Iraq. But these are big picture, macro-level arguments, and ones that require the right salesperson. Someone like, say, the former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO".

Raw Story is reporting that the, Organizers of the Democratic National Convention on Monday announced themes and primetime speakers for each of the four days the party will gather to crown its nominee in two weeks.

The theme for the Aug. 25 opening night will be "One Nation," with a speech by Michelle Obama.

The Aug. 26 theme is "Renewing America's Promise" with a speech by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The third night of the convention, Wednesday Aug. 27, will feature a prime-time speech from Obama's yet-to-be-named running mate. The day's theme is "Securing America's Future," which just so happens to be the name of Gen. Wesley Clark's Political Action Committee.

The theme for Aug. 28, the night Obama formally accepts the nomination, is "Change You Can Believe In." Obama will speak at the 75,000 seat Invesco Field in Denver, while the rest of the convention will take place in the nearby convention center.

So what do you Obama supporters think, is Wes Clark de man?

I think he would be a really good choice, but I have hunch that Evan Bayh is going to be the selection.

I agree Bayh is a very likely choice, but when his name comes up, I always think of him in the Rose Garden with Bush and McCain announcing the joint resolution authorizing the Iraq War

Bingo.  Bayh isn't the kind of candidate Obama's looking for, methinks.  Clark's a possible, but I kinda doubt it.

One speculation I read today is that it might be an old-time Democratic stalwart for a one-term VP slot, leaving Obama free to name someone else for his second term, setting that person up for the 2016 election in a kind of echo of the 2008 experience.

an old-time Democratic stalwart for a one-term VP slot ...Harry Reid?

posted by randomfactor on Aug 13, 2008 at 11:00 AM

It would get him out of the Majority Leader's position, leaving room for, oh, I don't know, some New York senator or something.  And Reid would become President of the senate, where his parliamentary experience would be invaluable.

Interesting thought.   But I think Reid's damaged himself too much over the past few years.

Who knows?  Frankly I think Clark is a bad choice because it makes Obama look like he needs shoring up.  I'm gonna go Kaine on a gut call.

I'm hoping it's an unorthodox pick like from the GOP or one of the female governors in the midwest.

posted by randomfactor on Aug 13, 2008 at 12:38 PM

The latter, yes.  Someone like Sibelius.  Nobody in the GOP is qualified to be vice president.

Stalwart could mean somebody like Ed Rendell from Pennsylvania, shoring up a really tight race in a big key state. Clark or Bayh are both strong good choices. There's always Stephen Colbert!

Oh, be still, my heart.  Steven Colbert in a debate with Joe Lieberman, getting him to admit that using cocaine is fun, and asking whether he can name all Ten Commandments (well, actually , that one's not his area of expertise...)

posted by ProgressivePete2 on Aug 13, 2008 at 03:36 PM

I doubt Lieberman would even show up for that debate. He would clearly be outmatched.

I really like General Clark, but he's a huge Clinton guy, so I'm thinking no on that one. Byah is OK, but the sound of an Obama/Byah ticket just doesn't do it for my ears. Besides that, if he picks Byah the dems most certainly would lose a seat in the Senate. I'll go with Gov. Sibelius for my guess. A woman from the midwest would help the ticket. I really doubt he'd pick another Senator.

What about one of our own lady senators?  Obama/Boxer perhaps?  How cool would that be?

posted by randomfactor on Aug 13, 2008 at 04:11 PM

Cool, yes, but I don't like the idea of handing the senatorship to the Gropenfuehrer.  He's already rumored to be after it.

Let's pick a non-senator (unless it's Lieberman).

There's a lot of people who don't like Lieberman.  I think he's a little strange, myself.  While who Obama chooses as VP probably won't change votes either way, the idea of Lieberman as president, should anything happen to Obama, creeps me out a little.  I seriously doubt Obama would choose him.

You folks see the news about the state chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party, Bill Gwatney, getting assassinated today at the party headquarters? Bizarre story.

posted by randomfactor on Aug 13, 2008 at 05:03 PM

It appears to have been a disgruntled former employee let go from the victim's auto sales business.

.

Not that the current "kill the liberals" hate speech on right-wing blogs necessarily had nothing to do with it.

posted by randomfactor on Aug 13, 2008 at 05:05 PM

Fortunately, after the November election, Lieberman's influence will be greatly diminished.

...another person clinging to guns in times of desparation...have I heard that somewhere?
