On Barak
I actually like Barack Obama. He is fresh and witty, he has vices he freely admits to and he inhaled. In other words, he is honest, at least about himself. I appreciate his plans for the war on terror and he seems to understand the quandry in Iraq and it's broader part in teh war on terror. He seems to be ready to take the reins of power and do it responsibly and decisively without much focus on outside influences. He doesn't seem to support any special interests or have any untoward agendas other than the long term health of America as a country. I like that. Sure, there are areas in which I disagree with him on domestic issues, but he seems to have a lot fewer than the other candidates on the left where I am concerned. Oh, I won't vote for him because he is still a liberal, and like all politicians, what he has to say now and what he would do were he elected are most certainly two different things, but I still like what he has to say and how he says it. The sad fact in this race is that, whether or not they argree with him, there are many others who will not vote for him because he is black. To so many Americans anything of merrit he has to say will be outweighed by that simple fact. Congressmen, Assemblymen, Senators and Goverenors of color are in the club these days, but the most powerful office in the world is still a white gentlemans seat and quite out of reach for Mr. Obama. Good or bad, right or wrong, that's just the way it is, and before anyone slams ME as a racist, go back in the archives and read "Who you callin' a racist" that I posted last year. Barak Obama seems to be a genuine and good man and a man who truly loves his country and what it stands for, but sadly it seems most of the voting public would rather see a man of questionable character or one weak on policy in office than a black man and that stinks.

I'll vote for him if he's the nominee. I prefer another in the primaries. I hope he runs again if defeated, because my main objection to Obama is that he's not seasoned enough for such a national office. He could prove me wrong. . Democrats may have a unique opportunity this cycle to get either a woman or a black man elected. I don't think in a normal year we'd have a chance of pulling it off. . Mark, item we discussed is on its way. Good either on Oak Street or F Street. posted by

Obama sticks his foot in his mouth too often for my likes. He means well but he's unseasoned. I don't want another unknown taking the reins. We've been there and look how it turned out. item we discussed is on its way Are you sure this is the right forum for these kinds of transactions? ;) posted by

Is there something we should know? Hmmm...... I will agree on Obama as far as feeling the country isn't quite ready for a black president. I doubt they're ready for a woman either. Nether are prejudidicial comments..just an observation. We've come a long way but I don't think we're there yet. Just the fact that both are running says a lot about how far we've come as a country. posted by

From Fark: " I don't know if you guys realize this but Obama is black. I'm no lawyer but I'm pretty sure he can only, at most, be elected to three fifths of the presidency." Next best quote: After someone commented that his estranged family was actively working against him, "Well, maybe if his kids had been hit by airplanes he would have paid more attention to them." posted by

Actually, TSM, this *IS* the proper forum for that transaction. . A while back I placed an online bet with Mark that Shrub would succeed in provoking either a war or a "pre-emptive" bombing of Iran by the end of July. Alas, I placed too much faith in his ability to accomplish even a monumental mistake of that sort, and I am publicly conceding the bet. He (and Nancy) have a gift certificate for lunch at John's Burgers on its way. I recommend the chili fries with cheese and onions. Heart attack on a plate... posted by

(I'm hoping the Dems will do a calculation on Hillary and decide against her, because her downside(s) in the general election are just too large in number and size. Truly the only way to make the Republicans competitive in November '08 will be to nominate her. Anyone else and they don't stand a chance. Heck, I think Gravel would give any (R) front-runners a full workout..... Just my $0.02) posted by

I agree; there's nothing wrong with that. That's why I sometimes chastize the Left for unintentionally validating the Religious Right's values when they poke fun of "Hot Tub Tom" or Rudy in drag. It doesn't work unless there exists the underlying assumption that it's wrong or bad. Not so sure I want to validate that. posted by

I don't vote for a political party, I've always voted for whom I thought would do the best job. I would like to see either of them elected. My worry is if either Hillary or Obama get elected, they could end up assassinated. There are so many people who wouldn't want a woman or a black man elected. There are the idiots who would want to make history as well for killing the first woman or black president. I'm sure they're both aware of this and would have better security than ever if elected. I hope you don't think I'm terrible for stating this, its been on my mind for quite awhile.

Tough, gristly and flavorless. Thompson hasn't started his campaign yet and he's already on his third campaign manager. Although if he puts the Twins on his campaign posters he'll probably lock up a sizeable number of Bush's remaining 25 percent. posted by

There was also Dave Chapelle who said that a black President would have to have a Hispanic VP, for "insurance" purposes. posted by
