motopoet - > MARK'S WORLD -> Mexican truck incursions unwise
Mexican truck incursions unwise

I rarely agree with anything the Sierra Club supports, does or has to say, but this time I am on their side. They, along with the Teamsters and most Americans, are opposing the plan to allow Mexican trucking companies to send trucks more than twenty five miles into the United States for the first time since 1982. There were a few reasons the Reagan administration curtailed their activities back then, not the least of which were safety issues, none of which, I am sure, have been addressed by the Mexican government.

The Bush administrations reversal of this regulation is a very bad idea. Mexico is notorious for its lax standards where everything(except illegal immigration INTO Mexico)is concerned, especially its transportation industry. I have seen trucks from Mexico that were, outwardly, fine, and I have seen them at the other end of the spectrum. There is no way to prove that the drivers are properly trained and licensed or that they, as stipulated in the new agreement, read and speak English. There simply isn't the regulation in Mexico that exists here. That's not to say that all trucks here would pass muster, but the vast majority will where the opposite is true for these Mexican rattletrap behemoths clamoring to be the next to crapshoot into our heartland. There is also the problem of these trucks being used to smuggle illegals and drugs into the country to points far enough north that the Border Patrol won't be there to bother with them and it won't be the industry itself doing the smuggling, but the drivers taking money for the jobs. It already happens regularly. Sorry Lionel Martinez and Reuben Navarrette, but it's just the way it is. It's not personal or racial, it's just that Mexican industry has a bad reputation for a reason and Mexican smuggling operations have been a reality for decades. They started and perpetuate the problems. I am not the one who caused it, but I will sound off about it.

President Bush is continuing to make terrible decisions where America's health is concerned in the name of, in my opinion, building an Hispanic voting base and all it is costing the rest of us, the middle class stiffs, is jobs, and ALL of us, our safety on the road and a contineing slide down the slope of drug problems and the violence inherent in that area. I guess that's not a bad trade off for Mexico, but what do we get out of the deal? Nothing, it would appear.

It will be interesting to see what happens after the one year "trial period" is up and what the next administration will about the issue, but I fear that as usual, nothing will be done no matter which side wins and for no other reason than they would rather keep winning than keep our roads, cities, kids and jobs safe here in America. Whatta sham!

This should be a good one to follow up on...lets see how many trucks are impounded for infractions for one reason or another--drivers arrested for one reason or another---the sudden SURGE of illegals and the availability of 'weed'--not to mention the wait time in our emergancy rooms and classroom size..I better check on our auto coverage because just as cookies goes with milk, these people will want to buy a vehicle-get liquored up and go driving-blasting that 'south of the border'victorious music and slam into someone's family..That law was passed WAY before 9/11..I really don't think that would have passed today..but who are WE to say what laws should be passed.

In 1997, (yes, 10 years ago....I know) roughly 3.5 million trucks entered the U.S from Mexico. Of those, roughly 17,000 were inspected. "Of those Mexican trucks inspected, about 44 percent were placed out of service (percentage of trucks removed from service because of serious safety violations.) This contrasts with a 25 percent out-of-service rate for U.S. trucks and a 17 percent out-of-service rate for Canadian trucks.

Of the Mexican trucks stopped north of the border but within the four border states, 32% of the trucks were found to have serious safety violations and were taken out of service. But outside the border states, the rate fell to a mere 19%. This is lower than the U.S. failure rate of 25% found among trucks stopped within the U.S. for road-side inspections.

LOOK OUT.

A neighbor of mine-whom by the way drives trucks throughout the states, has seen drivers get their rigs impounded BECAUSE at the port of entries they must scale out and show permits and registration--BUT if the driver CANNOT understand what that officer is saying--well,he or she really shouldn't be on the road--if for some reason I should have to exchange insurance information with someone else, the LAST thing I want to hear is--QUE?

Lingtaowoo,

These statements do nothing but prove your ignorance and racial hate.  Do everyone here a favor and move somewhere where your racist views are welcomed.

[edit]  Remember too, that it's suppost to be MEXICAN CORPORATIONS putting truckers on the road, not just any Jose. Like that makes me feel any safer.

Let the real racists shut up or move to the land they love: Mexico! The Global Masters of Profits want a North American empire and they have their people in place now to accomplish this in the White House, Congress, and the Supreme Court.

Lingtaowoo's views don't have to be welcomed. They're allowed to be posted here, just like your load of illegal alien-felching rhetoric is.

As much as I hate to say it, NAFTA was well on it's way to success during GHW Bushs'(NOT Bush SR...GW is NOT a junior)administration. Maybe Dubyas pandering to the mexican vote is nothing original after all.NAFTA would have come into play whether or not Clinton won, he just took the ball and ran with it, as he did with so many things during his tenure, but I see no reason why we can't blame him for something he didn't start just like the left is wont to do with the folks on the right.
