All's fair in war and media...or is it?
All's fair in media and war...Or is it? Tuesdays paper ran a color photo of a mother in Iraq holding her dead six year old son who was killed in an insurgent ambush. It was a heart and gut wrenching shot that anyone would sympathize with and it emphasized the horror of war. It has become pretty common for the media to run this type of shot, seemingly to evoke outrage against the war. Then on the bottom of page three, as they are every day, are the names of those killed in Iraq. Where are the shots of the dead insurgents? Where are the body counts, even if just ballparked, of our enemy? Why is it that we are subjected every day to what the war is costing us, but rarely if ever, kept apprised of what this war is costing the enemy? A number I guarantee far outnumbers our losses, just as it has been in every war we have fought in the last 100 years. War is an ugly and horrible thing and civilized societies disdain its use. Our present enemy however, has no problem with warring against anyone, military or civilian. It's what unites them and divides us, which gives them the upper hand psychologically and that is bad for us. We prove the point everyday by running shots like the one I mentioned and the stats that seem to do nothing but arouse negative sentimient in an already divided nation. Why is it that the media seems to enjoy spreadin misery among our own while they ignore, and in many cases, sympathize with an enemy intent on wiping us from the face of the planet? So, to all those who think sharing the personal misery and devastation of Americans and innocents with the public while ballyhooing about showing anything involving the misery of our enemy, don't preach to me about fairness and equality in reporting the news. There is nothing fair or impartial about what the media reports because, as usual, they tell us what they want us to know and they seem to want us to know that we are losing the war, which is not only untrue, but detrimental and disrespectful to those actually fighting the war.

I'm not saying anything remarkable has been done by this, or any other war, but once again my message is simply lost to those with no other way of looking at things but politically. As for you trying to get my goose by thinking I'll feel badly for watching our enemy die..It won't work, I couldn't care less about this enemy because he couldn't care less about me. This is not an honorable enemy and their plight is of no matter to me. Please send a link to the soldiers making a kid run a mile for water(how do you know it was a liter?)I really don't have time to scrounge for such things. My point, in any case, is what the MAINSTREAM media reports on, not some obscure site put together by anti-war folks shows.

Isn't it remarkable enough that we deposed a hated dictator and made the country yearn for his return? I'd say that's pretty unique in wartime. posted by

You make my point Random. I actually KNOW people who have been and are serving there. They tell quite a different story than the media. Is it ugly there? Yes, but the vast majority of Iraqis are glad to see Saddam gone. They no longer have to fear being taken from their families at any time, tortured and beaten for no other reason than they MAY have friends or relatives who MAY once had something to do with the Shi'ites or some other anti-Saddam sect or had pro west or democracy leanings. Their daughters and wives have no fear of being taken by his thugs and gang raped in front of their fathers, husbands and brothers who will be killed if they protest. Are there isolated incidents of Allied soldiers committing hienious crimes such as rape over there. Yes, and they should have their testes cut off in front of the offended families, but it is the exception to the rule whereas the former regime did it as a matter of course and used it as a terror tactic. It is unlikely that the Iraqi soccer team will be beaten for a poor showing now and it is also unlikely that WMD will be employed any longer against the Kurds in the North as Saddam had done. I am not saying that everything is hunky dorrie over there, but it wasn't in Vietnam, Korea, WW II, WW I, or any other war in which we have ever engaged. Atrocities happen because not all men are good men, but they dont happen as a matter of course as they do with the tyrannical regimes we tend to depose in such conflicts. I am so sick of hearing about what bad guys we are compared to an enemy who has killed millions for no other reason than they disagree with their beliefes, race, etc. Say what you will about current circumstances, but you all know in yourt hearts that doing nothing in the face of such genocidal maniacs as Saddam is a much worse thing that taking action to stop it. The man was not going to stop with his ownm people and unless you pay no attention to history, you know that to be true. posted by

Lumping all Iraq dead together does not tell the true story. In order to be meaningful the figures would have to be broken down as follows. 1. Enemy combatants killed by U.S. Military. 2. Iraqis killed by insurgents. 3. Sunnis killed by Shites and Shites killed by Sunnies. 4. Those innocents killed by accident during firefights.

I KNOW I will not ever see anything like that in the print or electronic media. It might go against the Bush and Military "haters" agenda.
