motopoet - > MARK'S WORLD -> Where's Ryan?
Where's Ryan?

Saturday's Californian ran a piece on the accomplishments of Kern County athletes in 2007.  Among them were Kevin Harvick(who now lives in North Carolina)and Casey Mears winning cup races, the feats of some of the local prep football teams, The Condors making it to the second round of the playoffs, The 'Gades stellar year and some others as well. All well and good and derserved praise and recognition.

That being said, I am now going to be biased, but accurate nonetheless. Where was the mention of my grandson, Ryan Mathews' stellar year at Fresno State? As a true(not redshirt)freshman he tied the national record for TD's as a freshman at 14, broke all of the records for a freshman at FSU and all of this while missing three games with injuries. How about A.J. Jefferson, another local boy at Fresno State who led the nation in punt and kickoff return yardage and made the All America team?

I know there are people on this board who don't like Ryan, and for some reason wish to see him fail, but I didn't think the staff were among them. Maybe the writer(s) of thios piece just dont like Fresno State. Maybe next season i'll include the staff in my "About The Boy" weekly updates on how Ryan is doing so they will remember him, like it or not!

Anyway, I just figured that as a West High grad and the kid who led the nation in rushing and TDs there in 2006, the local paper would at least try and keep up with how he is doing now. Maybe I'll just subscribe to the Fresno Bee next year if I want to see him get credit where credit is due.

It was a great year for him, and he certainly deserved recognition. A New Year's wish is to have him stay healthy!

How wonderful, moto, to hear about a kid who is doing well in school and on the field! I'm so tired of reading about the idiots, gangs and dui's.  You are right......your grandson and others who are local should have been included in any piece about "local" kids doing well and breaking records.

When the paper asked for pictures of little league kids, I submitted my 2 grandsons even though they live in Carlsbad, CA.  as both parents were born & raised here (both So. Hi grads) and did well in academics & sports.  They are wonderful kids, who get good grades, play sports & are in scouting - the older one is about to get his Eagle Scout badge and he is only 13!  The boys were so tickled to see their picture in the paper.

You just keep blowing Ryan's horn for him  :-)  AWESOME

mottopoet i wish your grandson the best. It sounds like he is a good guy and i wish him luck. He is an inspiration to other young kids that also dream about making it in sports. Ill be watching for his name in the future.

I forgot to watch the game today but the Bulldogs won according to KMJ Radio.  Too bad Ryan didn't get to play but there's always next year.  Hopefully he got this injury stuff behind him.

I didn't see Saturday's paper.  Did they mention Curtis Cornelson, starting Offensive Inside LB for Colorado State?  Although Colorado State was plagued with coaching problems this year, Curtis played the entire season with a hernia and Kicked Butt!   We're all so proud of Curtis, we could bust!

Here's the link.. http://www.bakersfield.com/...  I didn't see Curtis's name either.

I really don't think people dislike Ryan, he is too likeable, they just simply say things to agrivate you.And yes you are right Ryan and A.J deserve recognition in the piece. I don't understand it Ryan has gotten recognition all year so why not now? At any rate media is media. I think an update is a nice honor to these two young men but the hate and discontent is a travisty if you feed it in Ryans name.........Thats not what he is about he is too full of Love and respect

Hate?  That's a strong word and I didn't see any hate on here.  Discontent..of course there's discontent.  Should people be content that several of our top atheletes were left out of the article?

I never said they hated him, they just seem to enjoy it when he has a bad game and many on this very very board seemed discouraged, some vehemently so, that he was going to receive a scholarship to Fresno. The regulars here will certainly remember that. And you are damn right I am discontent!  I want to see him get the recognition he so richly deserves as a player AND a person. It may not bother Ryan, but it bothers me(and his Gramma!). Ryan may be a bigger person than that, but I'M not!..:o)

I'm with you Moto. I've followed Ryan all through High School. A nice and talented young man who works hard to help his team.

I can't beleive TBC failed to recognize him but as BakersfieldDoc stated, it's probably due to the turnover in the sports department. He was Fresno State's best running back this year and I also feel that his coaches underestimated him. Next year he'll be on the national scene if State kicks butt as I anticipate with all the returning starters (Brandstater, Pascoe. Jefferson, Moore, etc.). He has already received partial kudos in Sports Illustrated for being a part of one of the best RB tandems in College FB this season.

Well, now that I think on it..maybe recognition in Sports Illustrated IS a step up from TBC.

First of all you need to leave family out of this.(I'm Ryans Grammas sister)I will continue to take my stand that people will continue to dislike Ryan and the teams he plays on this has to due with the carreer he choose. Also people like to push your buttons. But i don't agree that anyone want to see him fail. Ryans greatness speaks for itself. His greatness comes from within, it is not charged, or coached from the bloggers here or the media, yea positive media is good but the responsible writers seem to pick him up. The media here in Bakersfield cheats out the home jc team that was nationally ranked from tv these athletes just didn't get forgotten at the end of the year its been going on all year long. I attended a BC game every bit as good as a FS game. They put on high school games but can't put on BC these kids have worked hard. Back to Ryan,He deserves all he gets and more but you can't wear you feelings on your sleeve. I was in the birthing room with this kid. His mom and him,2 months younger than my son lived with me for the first 6 years hes like a twin to me you don't think I don't have feelings?.......Ryan's faith in God will bring him the greatness he has dreamed of. No one has to fight for it for ill will. I am so at peace for Ryan he is on a special path. Pray for his health and give him support

In no way do we, the Californian sports department, dislike Ryan Mathews. I have no idea where anyone has heard this. Every time Fresno State is on TV, we're watching it in the sports department. During my son's 1st birthday party, my family (from Indiana) and friends were watching the State vs. Texas A&M game. And like most of you, I found myself rooting for the guy. I've never met Ryan, because I arrived here in December 2006, but I can tell you that no one has any ill feelings toward him or his family.

Pat Hill knew he had a talented back when I talked with him before the season. The guy can play. As for the lack of mentioning him in our end of year story it was definitely an oversight. Turnover has something to do with it, but we missed it plain and simple.

If you want to continue to say the TBC has a grudge, go ahead and use the crutch. I believe Ryan walks on his own regardless of what you want to tell him.

First of all..Joan..what are you talking about?. You ask to leave the family out of it when all I said was I was his Pa and liked seeing him in the paper. Um..how is that dragging the Family into it? Anybody who knows me knows how proud I am of Ryan. The walls in my home office are covered with every article in every paper that he has been in from here to College Station. Since 1999 in his youth football days I have only missed about a half dozen of his games(four during the Reno Run and two while I was injured)and even travelled out of town just to watch Pass League games. I have no heroic yarns about how pivotal I was at anytime in his life, I only know I have always been there if he needed me and I have loved watching him play since the first time I had the pleasure of doing so and that I have come from many games too hoarse to speak for a couple of days. If I want to boast, allow me that pleasure because even if you don't..I will do it anyway. I dont need anyones permission or blessing..I know Ryan likes my boasts and my wall....

Ross...It was just an observation and I like seeing him in the media..Like I said..he may bigger..THAT was tongue in cheek as was the comment about getting the Bee..I won't(I am actually a subscriber to TBC and have no qualms with the paper), but as usual, so many people miss that point..Seems everyone is spoiling for a fight and seem to feel the need to get defensive and pissy..THAT is a crutch. I DID see some pretty derogatory remarks about TBC sports, but I said nothing bad..I just made an observation. I was being sarcastic about the staff having a grudge. I know that not to be the case. Brad Riddell was one of Ryans biggest and most vocal supporters(and a hell of a nice guy). I was NOT being sarcastic about certain other people and they know who they are.

Whatever...Nobody cares who did what when Ryan was two or why he isnt on the front page every week...The whole thing started out as a question about other local athletes(anybody remember my comment about A.J.?), not just Ryan, and other posters made the same observation about athletes they know. GEEZ...Eveyrone needs to quit taking themselves so seriously ..As Warren Oats' character as the drill instructor in "Stripes" said.."Lighten up Francis"!

I would like to say that TBC has always been kind to Ryan and if they left him out for what ever reason well it is OK...Hopefully they will have plenty of good stories to write about all the talented athletes from the Bakersfield area in the coming years... I dont believe this was started as a bashing thread but just a grandpa who is very passionate about his grandson's acheivements and wants the rest of the world  (or in this case Bakersfield residents) to share that. I also know all the love his family has for him and wants to express it so everyone knows exactly how they feel......All I ask of my family is to not make our (me and Ryans) life a public forum post. Debate all you want about his sports life but please leave our personal life private.

Msmathews is right(as usual). This has gone on long enough! Ryan rocks, I love him more than my life(and would no matter his choice of career)and that's that. Sorry if the staff missed my sarcasm, sorry if I pissed off any family members and sorry I don't get to see the boy more often. That being said..I DID get to spend a big chunk of yesterday with him down at Naked Als,,Ryan has some rocking Tatt's also!
