New Kids Nothing New
I haven't counted the number of days since the democrats took the house, but suffice it to say that it has been significantly more than a hunderd, and they have accomplished doodly-squat! There has been no real change other than the faces and none of the big issues on which the new kids ran have seen any action. The GOP before them deserved to lose the house just as they deserve to lose more now, but who will fill these seats and will they make any difference? I think not. The domocrats will be next, just as they were in 1996. I'm not sure how long it will take but America has proven its intolerance of the status quo even as the people they elect to initiate change continue to fail to make those changes. The new kids will shame their party just as the GOP has done the last decade or so and cause the left to lose faith in them. It's just a matter of time. Obama peomises change, but let's be realistic, Congress is where the real power to change resides and they have proven that change really isn't in their agenda because it really isn't in their best interests. Change can be a good thing when done for the right reasons. The problem now seems to be tha change is in name only and aimed more at making the other guy look bad. It's time the two party status quo starts feeling the pressure from people who are more interested in true change than only a changing of the guard. 11 comments from 7 users

Sorry Moto--I just saw your post. Actually, neither the Republican nor the Democrat party really represent the Libertarian ideals. I sometimes vote for Republican and Democrat candidates when I think my vote will swing something either way, but I usually just vote the Libertarian ticket. I supported Hillary after supporting about 5 other people first. She seemed the lesser evil in the race between her and Obama and McCain. She still does. None of the truly Libertarian-leaning candidates seemed to go anywhere. posted by

Make all the excuses you like, they haven't fulfilled their promises and they are not going to. As I stated, it's simply not in their best personal interests to make those changes. And the republicans have never had to deal with obstructionist, fillibustering democrats, have they? If not for obstructioist democrats pandering to special interests(not that Rep's dont pander also) we would not be in this oil price crisis right now. It's tit for tat and everyone knows it. The difference between me and so many leftist detractors is that I will admit it. Thus my disdain for the current two party system. Catherine..If you are a Libertarian, how is it that you were a Hillary supporter. No one could be further from what Libertarians represent than she. Maggie...Bush never made any timeline promises. The new kids did and they said it so many times it was part of the political lexicon that year..and it's been five hundred thirty two days..:o) posted by

Dems have not had the votes to defeat the obstructionist stranglehold the Reps maintain. Add to that, record republican fillibusters and presidential vetoes and you have the recipe for squat.

I agree that the Librertarians have moved out of the realm of feasability with many of their views, but I do agree with much of what they stand for. Bob Barr sounds like a level headed guy, but unfortunately he isn't really marketable. Another sad fact of the modern day socio-political structure in America is that a candidate can't just be a great candidate, they have to be marketable. I give you John McCain. If he were being castigated in any store or anywhere or for anything else in this country due to his age the public would be outraged claiming discrimination, but since he had detractors, all anti-discrimination laws have been suspended. I am firm in my belief that without Hillary and Obama, the democrats would have had no one to run because they simply had no marketable candidates. posted by

You don't suppose the record number of filibusters by the Republicans has anything to do with it, do you? It's a damned shame they didn't follow through with their threat to use the nuclear option when they were in power.

Well, I guess the Libertarians are due for their share of criticism. Lord knows the Democrats and Republicans must be getting tired of it. posted by

From my perspective, the Libertarian Party has been hijacked by states' rights extremists who don't think that the Bill of Rights should apply to any government lower than federal. The LP is adopting a dangerous nation-state view of states rights. posted by

As long as the citizens of this country buy into the two-party system, it will continue. As long as the citizens of this country continue in their bipartisan bickering and finger-pointing, it will continue in Washington. The citizens need to start taking themselves more seriously, grow backbones and STEP AWAY for a second. They need to reach out and make compromises before their representatives ever will. Or become Libertarian, like me. : ) posted by

It's been 500+ days. Random says they don't accomplish anything because they don't have a veto-proof majority, but they don't seem to have the necessities to get the Repubs to cross over, either. Pelosi is considered to be a weakling, and Harry Reid is, well, Harry Reid.
