Smoke and Mirrors
Here we go! Just as I predicted(along with about a million other conservatives), the Democrats are already pork barrelling bills just as they derided the Republicans for doing since 1996 and and breaking the promise the Dems made not to do it themselves while stumping for the last elections. Their fight against the "culture of corruption" and the promises to make "real changes" that would send America in a new direction and the "first hundred hour" plan have all left their old opponents caked with mud from the slingfest, but have done little else. The new war spending bill is laden with pork ranging from subsidies to Wisconsin dairy owners to relief for the California Strawberry industry. It is absolutely pathetic. They call for our withdrawl from Iraq(and you watch, eventually from the war on terror) unless they can squeeze a few hundred million out of a bill that would expand and extend that very war. It is politics as usual so I am not syrprised, I just like to point out these things to those who actually believed the Dems would do anything they promised to do or that they would do anything that would make a significant difference in Americas direction, especially if it was going to keep them from dropping some jack into their constituencies, no matter who actually suffered for it, which in this case, will be our fighting forces. Where is all the outrage at pulling pork out of a bill that may keep vital material flowing to our fighters? Does anyone other than me remember the fingerpointing and namecalling that went on over the last few years about why our guys were short on body and Hummer armor? Well, I KNOW where that shortage will come from this time and it isn't the Republicans demanding anything. This will be in the lap of the left and I will be interested to see if any of the usual anti-porkers have anything negative to say about where this pork is going and why it is going there. My money is on "NO". I wasn't impressed with the Republicans job of handling many of the issues I feel strongly about, but I even less impressed with the left beacuse of all their saintly talk of making changes and so vehemently denying they were a part of the problems of the last twelve years. Politicians don't get re-elected by fighting for what they believe in, they get re-elected by spreading the wealth around their districts and voter bases and selling out to special interests. It has always been that way and it's not likely to change anytime soon and maybe, just maybe, Americans are starting to wise up to that. Maybe so much so that in the next election, we will see a boatload of new faces elected and say goodbye to the old school, back door political hacks. I can only hope. Before the elections, I said that no matter who won, nothing was going to change for the better, but most likely for the worst, and it looks as if I am being proven correct in that assessment. Timelines, milk, cheese, strawberries, cow farts and all manner of pork are being attatched to the funding of the war, which only proves that the left are more interested in the status quo than the soldiers that thiss bill was designed to help. You want to pork out a bill, fine, it happens all the time, but let's pork out a Welfare spending bill or some domestic subsidy bill and leave the saftey, security supplying of our guys and gals and the theatre of war alone! Again, there is nothing unusual about this situation, I am just tired of the left bashing the right for engaging in the same games they play. Double standards are rampant in Washington and that is just a fact, but that doesn't mean I have to like it or that I am not going to speak my piece about it. I predict that the right will get the house back in the next elections because so many swallowed the left's yakkity-yak hook, line and sinker and are already severely disillusioned with where things are going, which is the same direction they were already going...right into the crapper! I knew this was going to happen, but apparently many Americans didn't. So..I am betting another lunch that the voters displeasure with the left's smoke and mirrors show when the house comes up for bid next time. 17 comments from 8 users

Moto "Man" Your out numbered here but you have spine so keep up the good work. I wish I would have stumbled on to this discussion when it started. Dusty Moto I believe was not saying immigration is a threat...illegal immigration is a threat and it is. "A" Payne perhaps you don't compete against illegals, could it be you have a tech job or a job outside of skilled labor, I am betting you do. In skilled labor for home building the wages have dropped drastically do to illegal immigration and there really isn't a skilled labor in the residential building anymore. Take a peak out from your cushy world and take a real good look, we are competing with illegals every day....and we are loosing. The builders, developers and owners have to held accountable for the hiring of illegals, but that is for another discussion. Keep it Up Moto "P" posted by

Sorry, Mark, I get all sentimental when my country's future is threatened from within. I plan on spending the rest of my life here. . Glad you remember Afghanistan and Osama. Would you mind reminding the President? He seems to have forgotten. He can be reached at 202-456-1414. Better hurry--he's going on vacation again. posted by

When the government is screwing over the middle class and below to enrich the top one percent, it's handy to have some dark-skinned people for them to point fingers at and yell "Let's you and *HIM* fight." posted by

The war and our loans from China could hurt us a lot more than stopping illegals from entering our country and working and paying taxes they never get back since they don't file income tax returns. Your losing your "American society" because of the tax cuts for the top 1%, while the median income flounders for the rest of society. We are fast becoming a nation of two classes, the haves and have-nots. That certainly isn't the fault of an illegal immigrant who works and pays his taxes every week thru automatic payroll deductions, pays sales taxes every time he/she buys something and has no access to any of the public welfare programs you seem to hate so much but which their(illegals) tax dollars help to fund. priorities..some folks have an interesting set of values. posted by

For what it's worth, I'd have preferred a "clean" funding bill with timelines and without the "pork." It's a damned shame that Republicans (and some Democrats) needed the goodies to vote for the bill. Of course, I'd also have preferred a Congress which did its job for the past six years, too, and a President with a higher-than-room-temperature IQ. . If this bill had shortened the war by *TWO WEEKS,* it would have paid for itself. Two. Weeks. . So, let Shrub veto the bill, and then stick it to him again. And again. And again. And again. Because it's going to take repeated applications of the clue-by-four to the skull for it to sink in that this fiasco is sinking our country. posted by

What SHS said. Illegal immigration is a net *PLUS* to this country, and taxes are too low on the people who've gotten a free ride over the past six years. Where's the money coming from, and where's it going to? This graph may help:
And this one reveals the truth behind Bush's "economic recovery."

The two biggest problems facing this country are the Iraq War and the $3 trillion deficit that the GOP and the Bush Administration has gotten us in. The GOP's motto is suppose to be small government, but yet all they do is spend, spend, spend. I wouldn't list immigration in the top 10 issues. If we keep borrowing money from China and don't balance our budget, we'll soon be heading for another great depression, and the longer we keep our troops in Iraq, the more we'll be defenseless if Iran or North Korea starts pointing nukes at us.

Subsidies based on taxes. You might want to write your legislators to voice your outrage at the giant subsidies that are given out to companies like ConAgra, ADM, Lockheed/Marietta, Boeing, Bechtel, Halliburton, GM, and Ford to name a few. Our economy is somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 to 13 trillion dollars. The money our government spends on defense will approach $700 billion this coming year. This means the government spends roughly 6% of our entire economy's money on military projects. We spend more money on defense than the entire world every year. Feel safer now? posted by

The two biggest problems facing this country? Uncontrolled immigration and too much taxes. Somewhere on that list should also be the need to accommodate, with a .223 round, all martyrs' desire to get their 72 virgins. posted by

uh, They met their requirements of the first 100 hours. If you still think the Republican's will rise in 08..think again since the scandals will only continue through the next year and a half. The Dem's now have subpoena power and they are using it to their full advantage..much to the dismay of the current administration.
