Website Q&A Open Thread 6/4/07
Well, we accidentally skipped a couple weeks here at New Users Click Here, but we're back!  We do get emails from folks when they're having technical difficulties, and that's great, but this is a place where you can ask questions about how things work (or how they should or shouldn't work) and get feedback from both us at B.com and from your neighbors online.  So, any questions?

[BTW, in recent days we've gotten a lot of great feedback about anonymity and comment management.  First, thank you for the discussion.  Second, rest assured that your ideas have been heard, and our developers are working on improvements as we speak.  Thanks again!]

How about giving the mods the ability to delete or alter abusive posts?
posted by jasonsperber on Jun 4, 2007 at 10:16 AM
"The mods"?  You mean moderators?
posted by mattloch on Jun 4, 2007 at 10:17 AM
That would be you, Jason. And whomever else there has to keep things under control.....
posted by jasonsperber on Jun 4, 2007 at 10:27 AM
I figure you already know that admin users do have that ability, so is this a subtle suggestion that I'm not doing it enough?  ;)
posted by Roselady on Jun 4, 2007 at 10:32 AM
Jason, I don't think that was subtle.....hehehe

When you have to remove an entire blog thread because of bad comments, it just makes me wonder why you didn't simply delete the offending posts and leave the remaining ones.

Like I said, I don't think you could have been accused of anything but "good taste" by deleting the "mom" comments.....

Jason.  Mattloch's post sounds "abusive" to me....
posted by jasonsperber on Jun 4, 2007 at 10:54 AM

Matt, as I tried to communicate on my post last week, by the time I got to the threads in question, the environment of back-and-forth insults was such that I made the drastic, and not easily taken, step of deleting the threads entirely instead of cherrypicking comments and leaving mass confusion (unfortunately at that point I had to delete the posts as well, but we're working on that).

As you say, it's a judgment call.  Roy, I don't think I'll call Matt's comment abusive--he just wants his constructive criticism public.  Of course, I'm always available by email as well, and as you all know from experience, when you want to question how I'm doing my job you can just come out and tell me what your problem is, instead of couching it.  :)

Jason, I re-offer my handy "rule of thumb."  If a post accuses someone *ELSE* of hatred, it's one the thread is better off without.

Okay, since I'm in such a silly mood, Jason?  Can we sofa it? maybe divan?......Just wanted to make you smile, after all, IT IS Monday.........

Just a backhanded joke Jason.  Don't take me seriously.  I'm just here to have fun...

Roy and RoseLady, laughs are always welcome.  :)

Two of the last three comments included "handed" ness (word?).  Anyway, Monday has struck us all...

Now, where did I put my "thumb ruler"?
posted by mattloch on Jun 4, 2007 at 11:34 AM
Perhaps if you just removed the offending post (leaving an empty placeholder) and emailed them to the poster to allow them to edit the content and repost in place, Jason. The thread's continuity could be preserved through that method, and reposting of the offending material could warrant deletion of the entry entirely.

Seeing how quickly threads can get "out of hand", I can see where "cherrypicking" might become an issue, although the name-calling didn't start until well into the discussion, and it was a shame to see the "valid" posts lost because of the inappropriate ones.

I appreciate your suggestions, Mattloch.

Cherry picking? no, never, this IS the Californian!! allreds posts are just one insult after another, but that is what the Californian thrives on, be real.
posted by mattloch on Jun 4, 2007 at 11:44 AM
And I appreciate your taking of "constructive criticism" so well, especially after what happened last week Jason. It seemed like a "lose-lose(-lose)" to everyone involved, not just you. But since it is your job after all, I figured that you had the most to lose.

And now everyone is on edge, which can't be fun for you, either......
posted by jasonsperber on Jun 4, 2007 at 11:50 AM
Re: everyone being on edge after last week, Matt, on the contrary, I think what's happening now is exactly what needed to happen--people on all sides of the issue with all different ideas getting them out in the open, in comments, in individual blogposts responding to the issue of community behavior.  Talking is good, yes?
posted by mattloch on Jun 4, 2007 at 12:04 PM
Everybody seems quick to point fingers now, is all. A little over-sensitive. But the discussion is good, of course.

A delay before comments actually post might give you (Jason, Steve and anyone else who oversees the blogs) a chance to weed out the offensive ones before anyone sees them to turn the blog into a thread of trash talk.  The North County Times (northern San Diego County) uses a delay, sometimes up to a few hours, before a person's comments appear on their website.

The flip side to that is that you have to become a censor, and your opinion of what should/shouldn't appear might differ from other people's opinions.  What you find acceptable or think only pushes the envelope up to the line, someone else might find offensive or crosses the line.

I don't envy your position, but one of the reasons I don't visit the blogs that much is because I really dislike the trash and inaccurate information that seems to thrive here.

A delay is in place.  I submitted a new blog subject yesterday and it is still being held for approval..Also, please keep coming here.  Just look for the entertaining aspect and take most of it with a grain of salt. Can anyone tell me where that saying came from?
posted by TomW on Jun 4, 2007 at 12:57 PM
I don't like the delay, simply because it forces the moderators (ie Jason) to approve every single post.  First, these guys don't work 24/7 nor should they, but I've had a few late night chats that are a lot of fun here.  Also, the character of different threads is different.  For example, if I call someone a "whiner", you'd have to read the thread and have an understanding of my relationship with the other poster to know if it was an insult.

After the fact moderation is also the only way this community can ever grow.

I think this is pretty standard "community growth" stuff, where there's a big kerfluffle and the group spends a cyle or two talking about itself to itself and we all agree to new rules for the people who remain and then we move on.

I think Jason has it about right with his "As little moderation as possible but no less" approach.
posted by jasonsperber on Jun 4, 2007 at 01:09 PM

Tom, thanks for the permission not to work 24/7.  ;)

Roy, we do not have comment moderation that requires pre-approval for the posting of a comment, so I'm a little confused as to what you're referring to, so please get in touch via email (perhaps you're talking about a Your Words article submission?).

Oh, and "take with a grain of salt" (from Random House's Word Maven):

"With a grain of salt is a translation of Latin cum grano salis. According to The American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms, the Roman historian Pliny the Elder wrote that the general Pompey had discovered an antidote for poison that was to be taken "cum grano salis." This was apparently to make it effective. That doesn't quite explain the current meaning, though. Other etymologists believe that, at some point centuries later, someone decided that Pliny had been skeptical about either the antidote or its efficacy and took cum grano salis to mean 'with a dose of skepticism'. That has been its meaning since its first appearance in English in the 17th century. It seems likely to me that the derivation is something like this: If you're going to believe that tale, you'd better take it with a grain of salt to make it more palatable (as salt makes food more palatable). I don't know that we need to go back to the story of Pompey's antidote for a derivation for the phrase."

If you're referring to the comments Charlie made last week on my blog, I deleted them. But I did make Jason aware of them.

We should be able to police ourselves and delete offending posts from our blogs, but poster's accounts who are reported repeatedly should be removed sooner.

Jason --  Did you see my other suggestion which I posted on your "Just Stop" blog?  It had to do with registering posters.
posted by jasonsperber on Jun 4, 2007 at 01:38 PM
Yes, I did, Nine, and I'll pass it on to the developers, but I think it's probably either unworkable or else really really difficult.  But thank you!

Now to technicalities.  Why is it that most of the time I get this heading.

Instead of this one

The listings in the one above is horizontal but it showing up here as verticle.  Anyway..I can see the new posts on the second example but not on the one that shows up most of the time.  (The first one)  (And it makes my print here centered...weird)

Nancy, we're not quite sure, but we think your style sheets aren't loading properly.  Try this: hit shift and your browser's refresh button at the same time.  Let us know if anything changes.  Anybody else have ideas on this, or similar experience?

When I click on "comments" I get the odd page mentioned.  When I clicked to respond to your post, I got the normal one.   I tried the shift refresh and nothing changed.  This just started in the last few days.    Strange isn't it?  It's not a big deal except I can't get to new blogs (post) the other way.
