Website Q&A Open Thread 7/2/07
Okay, last week saw our latest software upgrade roll-out, so that, of course, meant much of the end of the week was spent catching and fixing little bugs here and there.  We apologize for any inconveniences or technical difficulties you may have experienced, and thank you for the heads-up many of you provided about some of the problems.

Most, if not all, of the identified bugs have been fixed by now, but if you're still encountering things (not) working in ways that shouldn't be happening, please drop a comment here or shoot me an email directly.

Don't forget, give us as much detail as you can--OS and browser used, what you were doing when the problem happened, what you saw when it happened, if you were using more than one window with B.com in it, if you were logged in at the time, screenshots if possible, etc., etc.

Thanks for helping us make your experience on this site even better!

I've only had to sign in twice this morning.  Does that mean it's getting better in that area?

The formatting of each post has changed. Now the text starts at the bottom of the poster's picture/icon, instead of in a seperate field.

I'm assuming that you know about this, and it's due to a version roll-out. Just thought I'd mention it.

Mattloch, I'm not seeing what you describe in either IE7 or Firefox, and I'm looking at comments in the last few days up till now.  Please send a screenshot and details.

Jason, I saw it earlier and it's now corrected XP/Firefox.  The comment layout is still different though, with comments going all the way to the margins below the avatar or straight to the left for folks without them.

Also, and I know this is way down the list, but Buffoo's "Glory to Glory" post blew the margins on the "recent blog" page with a long character string.  The margins on his blog are still blown.  Any chance you guys are looking into hard margin solutions?

Also, and this is just geeky me, but one thing I've noticed is that if I'm browsing the site in multiple windows or tabs, the way the cookies set means you have to enter the last spam code that appeared in any window, not necessarily the one you're typing in.

OK, that's all for now.  :)

I managed to "fix" it by installing the newest version of avant (which I use over the top of IE). Of course, that opened up another can of worms (demanding my password for each different server it contacted, which could be over thirty per page). I've re-installed an older version over the top of the newer, and it seems to have fixed the new problem, and left the fix for the older problem.

I can't use Firefox for the same reason (requires me to continually type in my user name / password, despite the Password Manager supposedly saving my info each time). And the comment window / field doesn't work at all in Opera.

Ain't technology grand?

Matt, the getting-signed-out bug is being worked on (in IE and Firefox).  Trust me, we don't like it any more than you do.

As for your issues with Avant and Opera, this is from my colleague the digital products manager:

"...we can't support weird browsers that noone uses :) "

Heh.  (I mean, I can't even use my default browser at home--Safari on my iMac--when I'm doing work stuff b/c it's not supported.)

And Tom, thanks for all the ideas--I forwarded them on the to the Keeper of the List.  ;)

I find the changes in on this blog amusing in that they prove truism that most who post here deny. The reality is that whining does work and the whiners here got their way without giving up anything significant.

Take the removal of anonymous post of instance, changed nothing; the same ones who deleted post that do not agree with their position still do the same. The big whiners motoped, Sam, Marsh and a few of the ladies of the evening on this post still use the delete with as much indiscretion as ever. So they whined and they received their compensation in the form of killing off some of the competition and that is I guess, fair in Bakersfield.

However, you cannot place all the blame on the whiners; they were smart enough to recognize what they were working with, Sperber.

They knew that is the lobbied, cajoled and intimidate Sperber he would cave in, after all they sized him up very accurately. He is an intelligent, well educated, and extremely loyal boy whose main job after all is to guard the Californian’s Plantation door and while he may appear independent, his most important vocabulary is …..YES SIR!

So what do you hope to attain with your whining, RKH?
posted by redkernhero on Jul 5, 2007 at 01:13 PM
It is done! as in has been attained, sorry I forgot to include you, but my mistake.

And the atmosphere here has improved considerably. We also have lots of new faces around.

For the record, I've only deleted three comments on my blogs and one of those was only after I'd reposted that person's comment with the picture resized.

Yes, it is cozy when you party with close friends and exclude those with whom you do not agree. Why it is old home week, pass the cookies.
posted by dusty1215 on Jul 5, 2007 at 01:46 PM
I don't agree with Roy rkh but he doesn't get nasty..you can discuss a topic without resorting to personal attacks. And if you touched those cookies..no thank you.
posted by redkernhero on Jul 5, 2007 at 01:51 PM
Speaking of nasty, how the hell are you today?
posted by dusty1215 on Jul 5, 2007 at 01:53 PM
Not as nasty as you but thanks for asking.
posted by TomW on Jul 5, 2007 at 01:53 PM
Yeah, RKH, cause Roy, Nancy and I agree on pretty much everything all the time.  Heck, I don't even agree with Dusty half the time.  It's not about agreeing or exclusion.  It's about being honest and not mean.

You on the other hand don't actually share anything.  It's sad, but if you'd actually join the conversations, maybe you'd feel less like you are on the outside looking in.
posted by TomW on Jul 5, 2007 at 01:54 PM
I'm pretty sure he was talking to me, Dusty.  ;)
posted by dusty1215 on Jul 5, 2007 at 01:55 PM
Tom, I think rkh likes being the outsider. He thinks it allows him some leeway in judging everyone else.
posted by dusty1215 on Jul 5, 2007 at 01:57 PM

Does it matter who he was talking to? He talks down to everyone, which suggests he holds himself in very high regard.

posted by TomW on Jul 5, 2007 at 01:58 PM
Maybe, Dusty.  There's a lot of effort he goes to to distance himself though.  Like a reaction formation against forming bonds.

So to bring it back on topic, there was talk (by the rabble) of having an ignore button.  Any word on that?
posted by TomW on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:00 PM
He doesn't, Dusty.  People who really think they're all that rarely act that way.  Maybe it's the bleeding heart liberal in me, but I just feel bad for him.

Tom, remember that List I mentioned?  :)

How did I get into this discussion? Did I miss a "deleted" post?
posted by dusty1215 on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:03 PM

Oh goodie Jason! It will get I workout I am sure! :P

I feel contempt for him more than anything Tom. His arrogance reminds me of Bush. thats the last I will comment on that persona..no sense giving him more ink than he deserves.

posted by jasonsperber on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:04 PM
Roy, you were used as an example of how not everyone agrees on things here but how disagreement can be handled well.  (It was a good thing!)
posted by dusty1215 on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:05 PM
Jeez Roy..now I know I just have to use your name in a comment and your all over it :P
posted by RoyTullis on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:06 PM
Thank you Jason.  Just wondered. I can get in enought trouble all by myself.  ;o)
posted by TomW on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:06 PM
Hey Roy, that was it.  Just saying that I think you're cool because even though we don't always agree on the issues, we generally agree on how to talk about the issues.

I dragged Nancy into it as well.
posted by redkernhero on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:11 PM
What can I say ? You all prove my point, giving each other kudoes, but what the hell you wanted a circle jerk, and Jason just obeyed orders and gave you one, nothing wrong with that. Geez doesn't it just make you feel good?
posted by RoyTullis on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:12 PM

Okay Dusty....Folks were talking about deletions and I thought I had missed something......

spam check: DCGPK----Deletions Causes Gripes, Pouts and  Kurses (Okay! I had to cheat on K).

posted by dusty1215 on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:14 PM
Nice work with the spam code Roy, we get off topic at every turn. Using you as an example..we rarely agree but the discussion is always cordial.
posted by mattloch on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:20 PM
Sheesh, do people still read rkh? I haven't stopped on any of his posts for weeks now. Just a big blank spot I skip over when I'm reading through comments. He was never very funny when he started his shtick, and didn't improve at all in the following weeks. I guess it's just like a cable channel that never has anything good on it; I just skip over it like it doesn't exist, like a placeholder until something better comes and replaces it......
posted by redkernhero on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:22 PM
Actually,  I respect Roy, he is an [edit.] but he is always up front not like the rest of you little snitches who like slip nasty notes under the door, and demand respect and exclusive use of the blog , neither of which you deserve nor have earned.
posted by dusty1215 on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:24 PM
We gave him all the time he deserves Mattloch. On to other topics....

It is not my fault you like to hold things in your mouth, is that pipe symbolic?
posted by dusty1215 on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:41 PM
Mattloch, are you going to see Sicko?
posted by mattloch on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:42 PM
My pipe is an extension of my car. Penis. Sorry, I meant to say "my penis is an extension of my car." My bad.

Sometimes a pipe is just a pipe.

Dunno Dusty. Is it still showing, or has the local theater already changed it over to a fifth screen of "Live Free Or Die Hard"?
posted by redkernhero on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:46 PM
I see said the blind man,  a PENIS, no wonder you have such a wry smile and a lick.....I drive a Truck myself , but that is just me.
posted by dusty1215 on Jul 5, 2007 at 02:49 PM
They don't show it at Valley Plaza..I just looked.

WOW...we gals have just been called "ladies of the night."  Thank goodness for that...it's too danged hot in the daytime.

Jason..is the text box wider or is it just me?  I can't find the slide on the side (how clever of me..lol) now and it's frustrating.  I haven't changed anything myself.
