Council meeting side note

Oh the irony.

At Wednesday's meeting where the Council was to discuss the controversial Westpark alignment to connect Highway 58 to the Westside parkway, Vice Mayor Harold Hanson made a presentation to Jacques LaRochelle, a long time roads planner who is leaving to go to work for Napa.

Jacques was instrumental in getting the Thomas money for roads. He knew more about roads and road funding that pretty much anyone at the city. But when we got the money, he was mysteriously cut from the Thomas roads team. Instead, City Manager Alan Tandy and Public Works Director Raul Rojas took the lead.

Eventually, he was pushed out of roads entirely and put in the water resources dept. Shortly thereafter, this nearly 20-year city veteran got a new job. Hmmmmm.

With Tandy at the helm of the Thomas projects, progress went into a tailspin until Cong. Bill Thomas himself came to the city and gave an historic tongue lashing to Tandy and others, reportedly.

Thomas sat behind LaRochelle as he graciously accepted the council's well wishes.

Rojas had a lot of nice things to say. Tandy said nothing.

Interesting.

I thought, in his State of the Union Address, Bush erased all the Earmarks.

Wouldn't that mean all earmarks. Even the Thomas Earmarks?

So I am wondering.

Was my moment of exhilaration, only a dream, a dream of a secure country. One that is out of debt and not owing to any nation.

Oh well,

I will just fade away to my closet. And go on wondering.

Wondering when H. P. Sears will show up with my notice of debt, past due to the Nation of China.

I suppose I could hide under the throw rug and not answer the phone or door. I suppose that should work for a while.

I suppose I could wonder if, wandering away from responsibility, will forgive my debt and allow me to hoist America's flag proudly again.

I keep on wondering. I keep on spending. I keep on wasting away our nations resources.

But I can not take the first step to responsibility.

I can not stop spending money that is not mine.

No, Bush's comment in the SOTU was no NEW earmarks after November, 2008, so anybody on the hook for re-election can still bring home the uncured bacon.
