noholdsbarred - > No holds barred -> Responses to the dating column coming in hot and heavy!
Responses to the dating column coming in hot and heavy!

Several women have emailed to say they KNEW there was something out of whack here and thanks for putting the numbers to the sense that women with higher education and professional jobs far outnumber single men with those same demographics.

One lady told me she'd be taking up golf ASAP as that's where the single professional men are all "hiding."

ON THE OTHER HAND!!!

I've received a fair number of emails from MEN both in the blue collar and white collar crowd saying they haven't been able to find any quality women to date here. Some have taken me to task for the stats I presented and others are just outright asking for names and numbers.

Clearly this is an issue that strikes at a lot of lonely hearts here in old Bakersburg.

Oh, and this lovely gentleman emailed me the following advice:

"Allow me to offer you a suggestion: Windbags like you will have the most luck securing a date and relationship at your local gay bar. Try being a lesbian or find a nice sissy boy who doesn't mind women of your ilk."

Should my former Marine, truck-drivin', football-loving, cowboy of a husband be offended? Eh, he's pretty tough...look who he married!

In my much younger days, every parent sent their daughter to college because that's where the husband material is. This motive is not as evident these days but the trend is indicating that more women are getting degrees and pursuing a professional career. Some campuses have a slight majority of female students.

It only follows that women will continue to assume professional and management roles in the workforce. A changing society has eroded much of the traditional roles and stereotypes of women (and minorities) that were an institution a generation or so ago. A brain is a brain, regardless who's head it is in and if you got it, the opportunity to train it and put it to use is accessible.

Finances is an important consideration to a relationship, and not simply in terms of a bank account. It is understandable that affulence is also associated with maturity, emotinal stability, independence and a logical mind. As always, there are not enough men and women of this ideal to pair off with everybody.

A lot of the comments remind me of a comment I read. "You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a prince."

In my younger carousing days a bartender (country two steppin' type places) once told me that a bunch of gals would come in, have one drink, not see any guys to dance with and move on to another club.  Then a groups of guys would come in, have a drink, not see any gals to dance with, and move on to another club.  He said if one group would just sit a while the other group could catch up and everyone would be happy.

Sigh...story of my life.  It's all about trains and airports and docks.

Oh, and I kissed my fair share of frogs. Given up on the prince though  :-)

I believe I read that most people meet their mates through friends or the workplace.  I was really out of luck because before I got into my present profession I worked in cosmetics.  You don't meet many guys there unless they're married shopping for their wife or....welll...for themselves and definitely not interested in me.

You see gals, you need to work in either sporting goods or hardware.  If you're not in retail, you might want to consider a part time job there.

So you were at Rozannes years back...that was a fun place ~Nancy~

Roxannes wasn't really my thing Ling.  I never liked the DJ bizness.  When we were running the streets we hit the places with bands like Funny Farm, Exec Lounge. Barrel House. And an all time favorite, Rodeway.

Sounds like to me you had a ball....doing that boot scootin' boogie....good for you

I miss the honkytonks.

I miss having coffee & breakfast at Zingos after the bars closed.

I miss drivein movies.

Oh gosh, now I'm depressed.

Chi..ditto.

When we were young and our kids were babies we just loaded them in the car with blankets and pillows and went to the drive in.  Now the grandkids have babies and they're limited to movies because they can't take infants/toddlers who have just learned the fine art of throwing fits into a theater.  Net flix makes a bundle off of them.  What a shame.

Sorry Lois, we high jacked again.

Before I begin, I'm a college grad and my wife is, too. It's a real simple concept. many of the educated women are too snooty towards Bakersfield and won't "lower" themselves to a normal man. They want a worldly man or one without faults and this life-partner non-sense. Worry about finding someone who is normal and able to have fun with you and raises you up. Don't go after the bad boy you want to change or womeone who fits an image. Substance is not on the surface!

And then...my wife and I will go out to dinner somewhere and we'll see a young couple out on a date. The woman is usually dressed to the nines...very attractive...and the guy is there in his cargo shorts and t-shirt and hat on sideways and running shoes, that are untied. It's a lot like the Carl's Jr. commercial, the one where the woman agonizes over which outfit to wear for a steak dinner and shows up at her boyfriend's apartment and he looks like he just finished doing yardwork.

I don't get it. I wouldn't have dreamed of asking a girl out if I wasn't willing to meet her halfway and do things like, you know, shave and take a shower and own some real clothes. I see guys in particular show up at weddings and funerals looking like they're headed to watch the Dodgers play. Don't you guys own long pants and a tie? Do you even know how to tie a tie? Stop playing video games long enough to become datable.

Quality single women: you aren't missing out on much as far as eligible bachelors go, not here in America's biggest small town.

Dating is tough regardless of whether you have a degree or not.  Personally I think many ladies are somewhat shell shocked from their previous relationships/marriage that they tread lightly when it comes to dating men, be it a recommendation from a friend or on the internet.  Can't say that I blame them.  So I think a lady should be somewhat picky when she dates.  Myself, I am so busy with work and raising my boy that it's hard to get out and date when you have work and parental commitments.

I think if any of us really knew how to solve this problem, there wouldn't be any singles floating around out there.  There doesn't seem to be a real solution.  I had people warn me about meeting people through the internet because you don't know anything about them.  My response was  You don't know anything about someone you meet in a bar either, other than they drink.  I know of two successful internet marriages right off hand.

Take heart, you could have grown up in Walnut Grove.
