paxchristi3 - > Shining the light of the Catholic faith on the Culture of Death -> Governor signs two pro-homosexual bills into law
Governor signs two pro-homosexual bills into law

California Catholic Daily isn't too thrilled with the news: http://www.calcatholic.com/...

Neither is Karen England of the Capitol Resource Institute in an e-mail that I received from her:

Yesterday evening Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed SB 54 and SB 572, both authored by Senator Mark Leno, into law. SB 54 requires California to grant all the privileges and rights of marriage to same-sex marriages performed outside of California prior to the passage of Proposition 8 last year. SB 572 requires the governor to declare every May 22 Harvey Milk Day in California.

"This is tragic news for California families," state Karen England, executive director of Capitol Resource Institute. "The governor has chosen to completely undermine the will of the people -- the millions of Californians who have twice stated that they intend for only traditional marriage to be recognized in our state. By signing SB 54, the governor thumbs his nose at the initiative process and the voters who trust that their vote means something.

Last year the governor vetoed a bill identical to SB 572 that would have declared Harvey Milk Day in California. In his veto message, the governor cited the local influence of Milk in San Francisco, stating that Milk's recognition should not be mandated statewide.

"We don't know why the governor suddenly changed his mind and decided to impose a radical social agenda in every classroom," stated England. "One possible explanation is the influence of the governor's Hollywood friends. After a biopic on Milk received Academy Award recognition earlier this year, Hollywood political activists began lobbying the governor to sign the resurrected Harvey Milk Day bill. It seems that the governor places more value in the opinion of his Hollywood friends and their values than the values of the people who voted him into office."

The Harvey Milk Day bill was so controversial that the governor dedicated a phone line in his office to calls regarding Harvey Milk Day.

"The people of California have clearly spoken out against same-sex marriage and Harvey Milk Day, yet the legislature and the governor continue to push their agenda on our children," stated England. "Parents are outraged that their young children -- including kindergarteners -- will be forced to participate in activities 'commemorating' the life of a man known for his sexuality. Parents and voters are deeply disappointed and outraged by the governor's signing of these two unnecessary, agenda-pushing bills."

Good for Arnold.  I know that you hate equal rights for everyone, pax, but fortunately people who hold opinions like yours are rapidly becoming the minority.  And it's no wonder that the Catholic church is losing membership.  Its myopic views and hypocrisy are too much for normal people to take.

+This is horrible!  My marriage is not going to mean as much because the government puts my relationship on par with homosexuals that want to commit themselves to each other. I guess I'll have to pray extra hard and hope God finds favor in my marriage.+

Milk Day is in the same California state "day of recognition" category as "Welcome Home Veterans Day" and "John Muir Day". It won't ever be a paid holiday because of that precise categorization and, believe me, gays and lesbians aren't any different than the rest of the state when it comes to these official "day of recognition" things. Harvey Milk is a praiseworthy figure to gays but he's no gay M.L. King to us.

Tragic?  Hardly.  It is what you make of it.  Nobody else's marriage has anything to do with mine.  Harvey Milk Day?  So what.  Everybody gets a day now.  Don't all of the American Idol's have "days" somewhere?

+But what about the sanctity of my marriage? Doesn't it have to be sanctified in the eyes of the law just as it is in the eyes of God?+

If it's not in the state standards, it won't likely get a mention in the classroom, much less have any activities associated with it or be crammed down pupils throats. Most teachers are too busy with state-mandated standards content and worried about the excessive but mandated and high-stakes testing of students.

Interesting that a Harvey Milk Day was disapproved by 69% of the respondents in a poll: http://johnmalloysdb.blogsp... Does that make them all haters, too, Swallowthatgum? The good priest also pointed out Milk's link to the Jim Jones' cult, something I wasn't aware of. Now I can see how the folks who are all gung-ho about having this holiday are trying to get us to drink the Kool-Aid with them.

Harvey Bernard Milk! Mmm, mmm, mmm! Certainly we won't be hearing any of that kind of singing in our schools, will we?

Spam code: OOROT -- Ewww, rot is exactly what's going to become of our schools when indoctrination creeps in.

In the poll you referenced, pax, whites are over-represented as a proportion of the California population by 8%. Hispanics are under-represented by 9%. Democrats are under-represented by 3%.

Interestingly, in fact, is the observation that most Californians support same-sex marriages (49% to 44% who oppose), and the only group for which support for Gay marriage is dropping is among Republicans, who supported it at 30% of their numbers in the 1970s, and have dropped to 23% today.

But I'll bet you don't believe in polls, nor the science that produces them.

We don't know why the governor suddenly changed his mind.....

Could be part of a deal get other legislation pushed through. Maybe he simply wants to some gay issues resolved to help a dead-locked assembly to move on to some important matters. The marriage recogniton bill would probably have been upheld in the courts, anyway. In any case, I think Harvey Day is as inconsequential as it is stupid. But if it lets some homos gaggle and celebrate a dead man nobody cares about, who cares?

Gay issues are largely about social issues. Referring to them as "pro-homosexual" is like calling civil rights "pro-Negro" or gender equality as "pro-woman" or separation of church and state as "pro-athiest."  As time goes by I think most people will view social change as "pro-people," as institutions that would exclude  segments of our population erode.

Maybe deep down inside...he finally wants to do the right thing for ALL Californians--and set politics's aside for once....it's an issue that's not going to go away anytime soon....

Just may be a stepping stone for any future office---it's called winning votes among the gay communities

You guys said it best.  All I can add is, personally, I couldn't give a crap about Harvey Milk day.  Or a cesar Chavez day or an armand assanti day.  It doesn't mean anything.  no one is going to celebrate it.  It's like columbus day.  Does anyone care anymore?  Not I. So just because they made a harvey milk day doesn't have anything to do with the family.  And the fact that you buy in to their propaganda is sad.  I thought you would have more intelligence. They're using scare tactics.  But... if you can't see that... Ignorance is bliss I suppose.
