US Department of Justice closes investigation of BPD
 
Bakersfield Police Chief Bill Rector announces that after an intensive and
focused 4 1⁄2 year investigation of the practices, policies, and standards of the
Bakersfield Police Department, the Civil Rights Division of the United States
Department of Justice (DOJ), based in Washington D.C., has closed their
investigation.
 
In July 2003, the United States Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division,
launched a “pattern and practice” investigation of the Bakersfield Police
Department regarding the use of deadly and non-deadly force and allegations of
discriminatory policing practices.  
 
A “pattern and practice” investigation involves a comprehensive evaluation of an
agency’s policies, procedures, and actual practices, in areas where there are
allegations of misconduct.  The investigation involves examinations of specific
incidents to see if they are part of a pattern of misconduct and civil rights
violations.  In general, they include the following. 
 
In-depth interviews with police command staff, representatives of police labor
organizations, persons who believe that they have been subjected to police
misconduct, lawyers and community leaders who have dealings with the
police department, and individual officers.

99cent store incident update
 
The Bakersfield Police Department is requesting the community’s assistance in
identifying and locating the suspect responsible for an annoying/molesting a child
incident at the 99cent store, 4200 Ming Avenue, on 1/20/08.
 
Detectives have obtained a surveillance photo of the suspect and it is attached to
this news release.  The suspect used his cellular phone to photograph a 12 year
old female under her skirt.  He then fled the store in a vehicle.
 
The suspect is described as a:
White or Hispanic male, early 20’s, 5’9”, shaved head, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and shoes.
His vehicle is described as a Late 90’s Ford Taurus, 4 door, brown in color.
 
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Bakersfield

The Kern County grand jury released this report today:

EL TEJON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

PURPOSE OF INQUIRY:

The Health, Education, and Social Services Committee (HESS) of the 2007-2008 Kern County Grand Jury visited the El Tejon Unified School District (District) on December 13, 2007, pursuant to Sections 925 and 933.5 of the Penal Code.

PROCESS:

The HESS Committee interviewed the newly appointed District Superintendent and reviewed the Grand Jury recommendations from the 2006-2007 final report. 

BACKGROUND:

The District office is located at 4337 Lebec Road, Lebec, CA, 93243.  The District is situated in the Tehachapi Mountain Range area of Kern County between Bakersfield and Los Angeles.  It encompasses an area of Lebec, Lake of the Woods, Frazier Park, Lockwood Valley, and Pine Mountain Club.  The District maintains three schools: Frazier Park School, El Tejon School, and Frazier Mountain High School.  The District also administers the Pine Mountain Learning Center Charter School.  Enrollment for the District is approximately 1,300 students.

FINDINGS:

1.    The District Superintendent continues to work with the Board of Trustees and the Assistant Superintendent from Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office (KCSOSO) to facilitate a wide range of ongoing projects.  Most notably, the hiring of an architectural firm that has completed a Master Plan of Development for the District, and will serve as architects for the  construction projects funded by Bond Measure E. 

2.    The District, with the Assistant Superintendent (KCSOSO) serving as consultant, has negotiated with the Kern County Department of Parks and Recreation and the Westside Recreation and Park District, a six year extension of the existing lease of the property on which the Pine Mountain Learning Center is currently situated. The District continues to seek land for a permanent school site.  However, finding suitable land on which to build is very limited.

3.    The District is looking into applying for grant funds made available through the Nell Soto Parent/Teacher Involvement Program.  The primary purpose of this program is to strengthen communication between schools and parents by providing school site staff with the funds to conduct home visits and/or community meetings.  The District is assessing the program, as there may be some drawbacks to being involved. 

4.    Another challenge to the District is declining enrollment.  The Superintendent stressed the necessity of efficiently managing fiscal resources to maintain a strong teaching/learning process.  The District’s beginning teachers are now attending monthly breakfast meetings to review best practices and participate in learning how to prioritize issues that will be most beneficial to student achievement.  A continuing burden for the staff is “teaching to the test.’’  This involves a time intense regimen where students must first learn how to test as opposed to gaining knowledge.

5.    According to the 2006-2007 Grand Jury final report, El Tejon Elementary School did not meet their Academic Performance Index (API).   The District is striving to meet their API target goals this year and successfully “exit” program improvement status.

6.    The District is working to establish high educational expectations and promotes the internationally used Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program.  AVID is an elective class that targets the idea of learning skills preparatory to ongoing studies.  Involvement of parents is a priority in AVID and there must be mutual agreement to support and encourage academic success.  The District is slated to begin teaching the AVID program in the 2008-2009 school year.  In addition, a strong Future Farmers of America program offers other career opportunities.  The Frazier Mountain High School provides a Comtec Partnership Academy which functions as a “school within a school” to enhance computer technology opportunities. 

COMMENTS:

The Superintendent wears many hats, among them, serving as Director of Special Education and Principal for the Pine Mountain Learning Center.  Through the dedicated effort of parents, lay people and the entire staff, the numerous endeavors of the District are being positively supported.  The Superintendent acknowledges that concerns arise as the District strives to stay true to the core belief of having “the kids your concern.”  The Committee believes the concerns are being appropriately addressed.

locating the suspect responsible for the fatal hit and run accident that occurred
on Friday, 1/25/08, at Panama Lane and Akers Road.
 
The suspect has been identified as:
Richard Anthony Alonzo, (26), Hispanic male, 5’10, 200, black hair,
brown eyes.  
The Bakersfield Police Department currently holds an arrest warrant for felony hit
and run involving great bodily injury/death and vehicular manslaughter.
 
The Secret Witness Program is offering a reward of up to $5,000.00 for
information leading to the arrest and the filing of a complaint against the suspect
in this case.  Anonymous and confidential information can be provided through

Details:

On 1/26/08 at about 0110 hours deputies were dispatched to a report of a 21 year old male not breathing at 6300 Summerset Way. , Apt. 35. Upon arrival deputies located an unconscious 21 year old male.

The victim resides at the apartment with an adult relative. The subject had some trauma, consisting of bruising to the upper body.

Witness statements indicated that a physical altercation and argument had recently occurred between the victim and an adult relative.

The victim was transported to Bakersfield Heart Hospital were he is currently listed in critical condition.

Detectives assigned to the Kern County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit were dispatched to the scene. The investigation is continuing, no arrests have been made.

Suspicious Circumstances Report
 
On 1/24/08, at approximately 6:40 p.m., the Bakersfield Police Department
received a report of suspicious incident which occurred in the area of Mauna Loa
Avenue and Old Farm Road earlier in the day.
 
At about 7:40 a.m., a 13 year old female walking to school was stopped at the
intersection of Mauna Loa Avenue and Old Farm Road.  She observed a subject
sitting in a vehicle across the street from her.  The subject exited his vehicle and
began walking toward her but then stopped, turned around, and walked back
toward his vehicle.  He then turned around again and began walking toward her. 
She became frightened and ran home.  When she walked to school a short time
later the subject and vehicle were gone. She later reported the incident to her
parents.    
 
The subject never spoke to her.  He never waved or made any gesture toward
her.  The juvenile described him as a:
Hispanic male, 30, 5’9”, 180, heavy build, short black hair, wearing
a red and black plaid shirt and tan dress pants.
His vehicle was a:
  White Toyota Camry, 4 door.
The juvenile said she had never seen the subject before.
 
Based on the circumstances described by the juvenile it is not clear what the
subject’s intentions were.

Details:
The Kern County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public's assistance in locating Heather Amanda Ming (age
16).  Heather Ming was reported missing December 17, 2007 by her father who indicated Heather Ming may
be in the company of Tim Burgan (age 39). 

It was learned by Detectives that Heather Ming and Tim Burgan may be occupying a 1980's Isuzu Rodeo
S.U.V, silver or light blue in colored with a damage rear window being covered with a red colored blanket. 

Tim Burgan was last seen alone possibly December 24, 2007 in the area of Taft, California.  Tim Burgan is
also known to be an outdoor enthusiast and may be frequenting campgrounds in the area. 

Heather Ming is described as a white female, 16 years of age, 5'4" in height, weighing 134 pounds with
brown hair and blue eyes.  Tim Burgan is described as a white male, 39 years of age, 5'7" in height,
weighing 145 pounds with blond hair and green eyes. 

Any information regarding Heather Ming and/or Tim Burgan is being requested and should be reported to
the Kern County Sheriff's Office (661) 861-3110 with reference to case number SR07-43606.

Details: With the prediction for the upcoming show fall, I would like to remind all those persons wishing to play in the snow to do so legally. Tehachapi is very limited in areas that are open top the public. The areas that attract people the most up here are properties that are privately owned. Trespassers will be cited and their vehicles could possibly be towed. I sympathize for those that want to play in the snow, but are turned
away or cited, but the property rights of the land owners much outweigh snow play. A trip to Tehachapi to enjoy the scenery or visit the local merchants is much welcomed. Trespassing and vandalizing of private property is not. Please plan a trip that is thought out, safe and legal for all involved.

Over the next two years, Kern Council of Governments plans to distribute almost $50 million in new funding for major capital improvement projects throughout the region, including $31.1 million for construction on the Westside Parkway from Coffee Road to Calloway Drive in Bakersfield.


The agency’s Board of Directors approved the slate of seven projectson Thursday, January 18 as part of Kern COG’s 2008 Regional Transportation Improvement Program, which delegates transportation funding through 2012-13. Projects receiving funding during the next two-year cycle include:

The California Transportation Commission, which has the last word on transportation spending statewide, will make its decision on Kern’s Regional Transportation Improvement Program May 29.
 

For the fourth two-year cycle in a row, the Kern region has not received its funding target of $90 million for capital improvement projects that it was getting prior to 2000. Dramatically rising costs for transportation-related construction materials have exacerbated California’s recent budget downturn.  Discrepancies between total project costs and available dollars are made up through transportation impact fees, other funding sources or by delays in work.


While the program fully funds one segment of the Westside Parkway, it has no money left over for a planned interchange at Calloway Drive, which is the Parkway’s second major phase to be funded. Several other high-profile projects throughout the county are also doing without regional transportation funding, including planned widenings of State Route 58 east of State Route 99 to Cottonwood Road; segment 4 of State Route 46 west of Interstate 5; and State Route 99 south of Ming Avenue.


Transportation funding is derived from three fundamental sources: a federal fuel tax of 18.4 cents per gallon; a state fuel tax of 18 cents per gallon; and the state’s sales tax (7.25 percent) on fuel. Cities and counties receive a combined 7 cents of the state fuel tax directly for road maintenance and rehabilitation, while Caltrans uses 11 cents for highway maintenance.


Neither the state nor the federal gas tax has increased since the 1990s, and inflation has significantly reduced their purchasing power. Money for the Regional Transportation Improvement Program comes largely from those dollars.


“This allocation keeps our projects breathing, but just barely,” said Kern COG Executive Director Ron Brummett. “In keeping with our recent history, our fortunes are very much tied to the state’s as a whole. Until the structural deficit is fixed, or until we find alternative funding, our roads are going to become more congested and continue to deteriorate.”

Details:  On 1/22/08 at 1200 hrs., Deputies attempted to effect an enforcement stop on a Silver 2001
Mercedes 4 door vehicle for vehicle code violations in the area of LaFrance Drive and South H Street.
Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated the vehicle and led deputies in a pursuit on surface streets in
south Bakersfield. The pursuit lasted for approximately (3) minutes until the driver and passengers
abondaned the vehicle in the 600 block of Southgate Drive. Several deputies arrived and established a
several block perimeter in the Southgate neighborhood.

During their search, deputies located the driver and one of the passengers in the 600 block of Lawson Rd.
Both of these persons were taken into custody without further incident.

The driver was identified as Christopher Jones, WM23 years old, of Watts, Oklahoma, was arrested for
felony evading. The passenger, identifed as Frankie Jones, WM42, a Bakersfield resident and the uncle of
Christopher Jones was arrested for an outstanding felony Parole Violation warrant.

At this point of their search, deputies developed information that an additional passenger of the suspect
vehicle was still at large and possibly armed with a handgun. This passenger is still unidentified but is
described as a HM adult, approximately 25 years old, 5'7" height, medium weight, wearing a blue bandana,
black sweatshirt, and levis. Deputies learned that this suspect had possibly run to a residence in the 700
block of Vine Drive. Deputies searched the residence but did not locate the outstanding suspect. During
their search of the Vine Drive residence, deputies arrested Mark Bunt, WM48, a Santa Barbara resident who
was visiting at the Vine Drive resident and not involved in the original pursuit, for a felony Parole Violation
warrant.

Both Christopher and Frankie Jones along with Mark Bunt was booked into the Kern County Sheriff's Office
Central Receiving Facility for the above mentioned charges. Investigation is still continuing on the
unidentifed passenger.

Annoying/Molesting a child report
 
On 1/20/08, at approximately 7:45 p.m., the Bakersfield Police Department
received a report of an annoying/molesting a child at the 99cent Store, 4200
Ming Avenue.
 
The victim, a 12 year old female, reported that she was standing in the store
looking at display items when she felt the back of her skirt lift and heard the
clicking sound of a camera.  She turned around and observed a white male, early 20’s, 5’9”, slim build, short brown hair, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and shoes, holding a cellular phone and realized he had just taken a picture of her under her skirt.
 
She immediately told her mother who was in another part of the store and they both observed the suspect run from the store and enter a  late 90’s Ford Taurus, 4 door, brown in color, and flee north on Stine Road.

Details: Dan Traylor, the inmate who walked away from Kern Medical Center on 01-19-08, was arrested by a Sheriffs' Deputy on 01-21-08 on new charges of possession of controlled substance paraphernalia, driving on a suspended/revoked license and without proof of insurance.   He is also being charged for Escape of a Hospitalized Prisoner.

The Sheriff's Off-Highway Vehicle Team will be working in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend.  There will be directed patrols throughout North-Eastern Kern County.  Sheriff's deputies and BLM Rangers will be checking for off-road riders who are riding off route in designated trail areas.  They will also be checking for DUI offenders, driver license and registration violations.      &n bsp;

Details: The decedent was incarcerated at the Kern County Sheriff's Office Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility when she
was found unresponsive in her cell.  Ms. De Luna was transported to Bakersfield Heart Hospital Emergency
Room in full cardiopulmonary arrest.  She was pronounced deceased on January 18, 2008 at 0449 hours. 
The decedent's cause of death is pending toxicology and micropscopic studies.

Department Joint Vice Unit conducted a Minor Decoy Alcohol Enforcement
project in the greater metropolitan Bakersfield area.  During this project, twenty-
one liquor store and convenience store locations were visited by officers and a
minor who attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages.
 
Of the twenty-one premises visited, three were in violation of selling alcohol to a
minor.
 
During an investigation, located at 2900 Union Avenue, a 16 year-old decoy
purchased alcohol at the “Minit Stop Liquor” store.  Mathew Wollitz, (37), of
Bakersfield, was cited for violation of Business and Professions Code section
25658(a), Furnishing Alcohol to a Minor.
 
During an investigation, located at 2700 Oswell Street, a 16 year-old decoy
purchased alcohol at the “Chevron Food Market”.  Karen Tallman, (48), of
Bakersfield, was cited for violation of Business and Professions Code section
25658(a), Furnishing Alcohol to a Minor.  
 
During an investigation, located at 5700 Auburn Street, a 16 year-old decoy
purchased alcohol at the “Fairfax Shell Mini Mart”.  Joseph Soto, (31), of
Bakersfield was cited for violation of Business and Professions Code section
25658(a), Furnishing Alcohol to a Minor.

SOFIA COMPLETES CLOSED-DOOR TEST FLIGHTS
 
EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, or SOFIA, has passed a significant mission milestone. It has completed the first phase of experimental flight tests, which confirmed the structural integrity and performance of the modified 747SP SOFIA aircraft that carries a huge infrared telescope.
 
The telescope measures nearly 10 feet in width and weighs almost 19 tons. It peers through
a 16-foot-high door cut into SOFIA's 747 fuselage. During this test series, the aircraft flew
five times with this external door closed. These flights tested the limits of the aircraft's capabilities in many areas, including aerodynamics, structural integrity, stability and control, and handling qualities.
 
"SOFIA is already a technological marvel, and will soon be a powerful tool for studying the
birth and evolution of planets, stars, and galaxies," said Alan Stern, associate administrator
of NASA's Science Mission Directorate, NASA Headquarters, Washington. "The completion
of its closed door testing phase is a major milestone on the way to SOFIA's inaugural science flights next year."
 
The SOFIA program also checked the functionality of the aircraft's cutting edge, German-built telescope. Engineers tested the ability of the instrument's control system to maintain its precise position when tracking a celestial object, even while the aircraft moves and maneuvers
through the sky.
 
"The project finished a very important milestone on the path to the first astronomy work with
the telescope, which is expected in early 2009," said Robert Meyer Jr., SOFIA program manager
at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.
 
 The aircraft now will undergo installation and integration of the remaining elements of the observatory before open-door test flights scheduled to begin in late 2008. After completing the initial open-door test flight, limited science observation flights will begin in 2009. Thescience community will survey the universe with five specialized instruments on SOFIA as the observatory begins normal science observation flights in 2011. The observatory reaches full operational capabilities in 2014.
 
The SOFIA aircraft is based at Dryden's newly established Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale, Calif., where it will remain for additional development, flight testing and science flight operations. The program is a partnership of NASA and the German Aerospace Center. Dryden manages the SOFIA program. NASA's Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., manages the science project.

The Passing of Members of the CSUB Family
In the past two weeks, we have suffered the loss of three members of our CSUB family. We mourn the passing of Matthew Johnson, Edward Laskowski, and most recently, Alexey Belyy.

Matthew Johnson was a 25-year-old communications graduate who was confined to a wheelchair by muscular dystrophy. He succumbed to the disease less than two weeks ago on January 5th. Despite his physical challenges, Matt engaged fully in student activities and student government. He was elected unanimously to the Student Union Board of Directors in June 2005 and served through May 2007. He is remembered for his sense of humor and strength of spirit. It was my privilege to award Matt his Bachelor of Arts degree in communications last June. Many members of the campus community attended the memorial services for Matt on January 9^th and 10^th.

Dr. Edward Laskowski, Professor Emeritus of Geology, was a founding member of the CSUB faculty who passed away at the age of 84 due to complications from a stroke. He earned a bachelor's degree from Union College in Schenectady, New York, a master of science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Rensselaer, New York, and later a Ph.D. in Philosophy from UCLA. In addition to building a distinguished career in scientific research, Ed's interests spanned cinema and filmmaking to jewelry making to health foods to teaching Russian.

Alexey Belyy, a native of Rostov On Don, Russia, was a senior majoring in religious studies. An outstanding athlete and member of the CSUB swim team, Alexey had a will to win. He died unexpectedly on Friday afternoon, January 11^th, at age 26 when he collapsed in his apartment after swim practice. He did not regain consciousness. Alexey was a freestyle sprinter and breaststroker who set our school record in the 400 yard individual medley last year. Less than one month ago at the UNLV Winter Invite, he took first place in his three individual events, the 500 yard freestyle, the 400 yard individual medley, and the 200 yard breaststroke. He was committed to giving his best in practice and in competition. The Athletics Department has scheduled a memorial service for Alexey on Friday, January 18, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in the Icardo Center. Whether death was anticipated, as with Matt; whether it came at the end of a long life, as with Ed, or whether it came unexpectedly as with Alexey, our grief is the same. We extend our sympathies to the families of Matt, Ed, and Alexey. Our lives at CSUB were made richer by their presence. We will miss each of them.

Commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
On Monday, our nation will commemorate the birthday of a great servant-leader, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We reprieve from work to celebrate his life and to honor his commitment to the cause of human and civil rights and social justice. I encourage you to continue Dr. King's legacy by committing the holiday to a day of service in our local community. In the face of great social needs, the question might arise,"I am just one person. What difference can one person make?" The answer can be found in the life of Dr. King, who exemplified the power of one person to make a difference. As we each respond to needs in our community, our collective efforts combine to effect change. Opportunities for service abound in the greater Bakersfield and outlying areas. Listed below are examples of our service and giving to nonprofit organizations during the Thanksgiving and holiday seasons. These and other community agencies would benefit from your giving a day of service on Monday, January 21^st:

Holiday Community Service
Business and Administrative Services collected more than 50 toys and $536 in financial donations for the Henrietta Weill Memorial Child Guidance Clinic. The donations will be used to help purchase clothes for the families the clinic sponsors. The Henrietta Weill Child Guidance Clinic is a non-profit, outpatient mental health center which provides counseling services for children, adolescents and families. Every year during the holidays they provide toys for children who might not otherwise receive them.

The campus-wide canned food drive resulted in more than 12 overflowing boxes of canned goods and non-perishable food items. Collected items were donated to the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter and Faith Christian Ministries who provided food baskets and prepared meals for families in need. Faith Christian Ministries distributed more than 100 bags of food for a complete Thanksgiving dinner. The Bakersfield Homeless Shelter, which also was one of the beneficiaries of the community-wide KGET Food Drive to which many of you donated, served 600 guests at their Thanksgiving dinner.

Our annual holiday Toys for Tots drive resulted in three boxes of toys collected for the U.S. Marines to distribute to children in the greater Bakersfield community.

The national service organization"advances the art, science, teaching and practice of public and non-profit administration." New Appointments
Vice President for University Advancement
I am pleased to announce that Beverly Byl has accepted the position of Vice President for University Advancement, succeeding Mike Chertok. Beverly comes to CSUB from University of the Pacific where she currently serves as associate vice president of advancement. She brings more than 20 years of experience in fund development, including a year as the interim vice president of advancement at University of the Pacific. She has a proven track record in capital campaigns at both University of the Pacific and Indiana University. Most recently she executed a successful $330 million fundraising campaign that far exceeded the university's initial goal of $200 million.

We are fortunate to have someone with Beverly's talents and experience joining our team. She is a proven leader in her field and will be an asset not only to the university, but to our community as well.

Prior to her tenure at University of the Pacific, Beverly served as the executive director of development for the university libraries for the Indiana University Foundation. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in art and secondary education from Morehead State University, and a master of science degree in educational psychology from Indiana University. Beverly will begin her tenure at CSUB on March 31, 2008. Please join me in welcoming her to the CSUB community and leadership team.

Dean of the School of Business and Public Administration
Provost Coley and I are pleased to announce that John Emery has been named Dean of the School of Business and Public Administration. Formerly Dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas, Pan American in Edinburg, Texas, John's extensive experience includes serving as dean of the College of Administration and Business at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana and as department chair and professor of finance in the School of Business and Economics at CSU Fullerton. He will join us at CSUB on March 1, 2008. John holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Denver, a Master's in Business Administration from the University of Denver and a Ph.D. in Finance and Real Estate from the University of Washington. Please join us in welcoming John to CSUB.

University Police Welcomes New Lieutenant
Lt. Jack Rutledge joined the University Police just before the winter holiday break on December 17, 2007. An 18-year veteran of law enforcement, Jack was a sergeant with the Kern County Sheriff's Department, prior to which he served as an officer with the Delano Police Department. Jack comes to us most recently from the Kern High School District where he served as a campus police officer at Stockdale High School. Please join me in welcoming Jack to CSUB.

Student-Athlete Becomes Law Enforcement Officer
As a student, Carla Johns (formerly Nakashima) was an impressive student athlete at CSUB, setting the University's record in the hammer throw in 1999 with a distance of 166' 7". That record held until 2003. She currently is ranked fifth in the University's history for the hammer throw. After graduation, Carla pursued her interest in a law enforcement career and earned a department sponsorship to the Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Peace Officer Academy. After graduation from the Academy, Carla quickly proved herself a quick learner and dedicated law enforcement professional. She rapidly earned a reputation on campus for her competence and willingness to help. Carla continues her success at CSUB, recently earning a promotion to Corporal with the CSUB University Police Department (UPD). Carla is engaged in campus activities and takes a special interest in mentoring students through the UPD's student assistant program.

CSUB on Oprah?...Maybe
It is not unusual for a yellow school bus to pull onto campus filled with students who come to CSUB for a campus tour. What was unusual about the bus which arrived on Thursday morning, January 3rd, however, was not only the group that had come to campus, but also the group which followed them. Godparents Youth Organization transported a group of high school students to CSUB by school bus from Los Angeles. Following the group was a camera crew from the Oprah Winfrey Show who had come to document their tour. Their journey to CSUB was a result of the efforts of one woman seeking to make a difference in the lives of Los Angeles-area youth.

Tanya Walters took notice a few years ago that some Los Angeles-area high school students did not contemplate college because of transportation concerns. They did not have first-hand exposure to colleges because they lacked transportation to visit college campuses. A bus driver for the Los Angeles Unified School District, Tanya rallied other bus drivers who wanted to help students overcome this barrier. The group of bus drivers, called Godparents Youth Organization, takes high school students on college tours. The program started locally and has grown to cities across the country, which caught the attention of Oprah Winfrey. Oprah will feature the group in a Martin Luther King, Jr. special to air on Monday, January 21, 2008. Tykecia Richardson, a public administration major who enrolled at CSUB three years ago, credits Godparents for making the dream of college a reality for her. If CSUB makes the edit, the show will air on Monday, January 21, 2008 at 3:00pm or 4:00pm and again at 11:00pm depending on the schedule of the local ABC affiliate. Please check your local listings for air time.

CSUB Football?...Not exactly
Former wrestler and CSUB alumnus Stephen Neal plays in the National Football League. A starting offensive lineman for the New England Patriots, he has been instrumental in helping his team reach an NFL record 16-0 season and remain undefeated in the post-season. During his CSUB career, Steve maintained a 3.24 grade point average. He was a four-time Academic All-American, a four-time Pac 10 Academic All-Conference first team member, winner of two NCAA Division I titles, the Dan Hodge Award (comparable to the Heisman Trophy), the U.S. Freestyle Championship, the Pan-American games title, and the World Championships, among many other titles. He holds numerous records, including the Pac-10's first four-time champion in the same weight class. He completed his college career undefeated in Pac-10 competition. There is a high probability that he will complete the 2007 NFL season undefeated, as well.

CSUB on the Discovery Channel?...Yes
Anthropology professor Robert Yohe and a team of archeologists and anthropologists will be featured in an episode of"The Bone Detective,"a 13-part series airing in the spring on the Discovery Channel. Robert and recent graduate Deanna Heikkinen traveled to Egypt in the summer to join the team who are analyzing early Christian mummies buried at an archeological site in Tell El-Hibeh. Check Discovery Channel listings for information regarding the show's airing.

Major Gifts
A major gift to fund two new endowments and an additional gift to an existing endowed scholarship added $300,000 to the CSUB endowment in December. The Shirley Wilson Fiddler Nursing Scholarship Endowment and the Claude David Fiddler Student Research Scholar Endowment were named in honor of a generous gift from David and Shirley Fiddler. Dr. Homer and Evangeline Myles added another major gift to their endowed scholarship for students pursuing graduate degrees at CSUB.

A new initiative to provide specialized equipment for the nursing program was supported by three donors: Lynn and Patti Blystone; Bob Severs, CEO of GemCare; and Dr. Robert Sheldon and Mrs. Jean Sheldon. The goal for this project is $500,000 of which $125,000 has been committed to date.
