Councilman Couch knew what he was getting into
Bakersfield City Councilman David Couch and his anti-illegal immigration proposals raised a big ruckus at Wednesday night's council meeting. It was quite the show, what with all that weeping and gnashing of teeth; all that wide-eyed fear and trepidation. And that was just the council. The standing-room only crowd was every bit as passionate and just as divided. None of which could possibly have surprised Couch, who surely knew the stink he'd raise by daring to suggest that the council declare English the official language of Bakersfield; that the city should not become a sanctuary for illegal immigrants; and that perhaps there might be a city service or two that local illegals shouldn't be getting. Surely he predicted the angry reaction from the pro-illegal immigration crowd, most of whom characterized Couch's proposals as racist, divisive and an assault on human rights. So why did he do it? Why take such a political risk over resolutions that even he agrees are largely symbolic? Couch was out of town this week and unavailable for comment, but I suspect the decision to go public with his proposals is a response to the federal government's stubborn inability to do anything at all about America's illegal immigration problem. Like many Americans, Couch is probably weary of waiting for the feds to do what they should have done ages ago -- secure our borders and stem the flow of illegal immigrants. Councilwoman Sue Benham responded to Couch's resolutions by saying she would not support symbolism over substance "just to jump on a bandwagon" and that making a "negative declaration" in regard to sanctuary city status was unnecessary. To her credit, Benham was at least able to form a coherent position statement on the issue, which is more that can be said for Council members Harold Hanson, Irma Carson or Jacquie Sullivan, whose respective responses were wishy-washy, weepy and alarmingly meandering. But Benham's failure to support Couch's proposals, particularly in regard to sanctuary cities, is imprudent in view of the number of U.S. cities and counties -- there are about 50, according to the National Immigration Law Center -- that have various sanctuary policies already in place. Local policies vary, but sanctuary cities like Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco generally prohibit police from asking suspects about their immigration status or reporting them to immigration authorities. It's a don't-ask-don't-tell policy for illegals, courtesy of local elected officials. While there's been no local push to make Bakersfield a sanctuary city, the idea was suggested by a number of those who addressed the board at Wednesday's meeting, including UFW co-founder Dolores Huerta, who apparently thinks the idea is just swell. Since a number of local folks are already considering the pros and cons of sanctuary cities, wouldn't it be wise for our local elected officials to consider them too? It's not an assault on human rights to recognize on the local level that which is already stated in California's constitution -- that English is our official language. It's not racist to ensure that taxpayer-funded services go to those who are entitled to them. And it shouldn't be divisive to take a public stand against a policy that sends the message it's OK to break the law. The federal government's failure to resolve the illegal immigration nightmare is forcing the hands of city and state officials everywhere. Here in Bakersfield, Couch is the only one who seems to know it. 53 comments from 15 users

While it is obvious following the money leads to understanding why our federal government will not secure our borders and favors increased slave labor in America with no attempt to hold Mexico to account for its own desperate citizens, forcing ever more cities and counties to pay for the influx of illegal aliens, there can be no civilized discussion of the problem when there are so many being called racists and bigots for even saying it's a problem.

Sam
I think we are in near total agreement on the immigration issue.
Supporting the illegals and the needy. Is to oppose the status quo. It is to end the misuse of humanity. To provide for more than a job. But a job that respects humanity.
Would you allow the sick into a hospital that is near collapse. Or would you treat the sick outside, Build a shelter from the weather in a area that was safe.
The wage situation in America is deteriorating. Unemployment is going up. Slum lords are raping the illegal's families. Workers are being abused. This is not a safe environment for the illegal and it's family.
The constant cry from the illegal isn't we come to pick your lettuce. Rather it is, we come because it is easier to succeed in America. When the methods to gain success is to disobey our laws. To ignore our heritage and expectations for standards of living. Then Americans must enforce the rule of law.
Reinforcing the rule of law has nothing to do with racism. It is abiding by the standards America has set for itself. It is obeying the basic tenets of capitalism.
It is a mandate from our constitution and heritage. posted by

Yeah, how dare the rest of the council not give a definitive answer on the issue like Couch did. What......he left before the party started? That reminds me of the kids in high school who, when they didn't like someone, would tell somebody else that person was talkin' $#I^ about 'em. What a freakin' coward, and what a silly proposal that offers nothing to the problem of illegal immigration. Does anybody seriously think that suddenly illegals will hang out at the Latin Market or Manny's Seafood instead of the Mercado Latino or Manuel's Mariscos? How about the council start working on real problems like freeways that don't stop in the middle of town, or wreck causing setups near the East Hills Mall. Yeah, this is an issue of symbolism allright......... posted by

If I make a citizens arrest on a Illegal immigrant. Am I a racist.
Is the only requirement for racism, to insist on the obedience to the law, by everyone?
Is it unfair to insist on good citizenship for those who wish to be a citizen.
Should all those who wish to live in America, be allowed without question.
How about 1940's era Nazi guard from Dachau prison.
I have seen no legitimate reason for the current state of illegal immigration in America.
The only explanation is that Americans are bad. We are racist. America is a horrible place. We are ungodly. We are a miserable excuse for mankind.
Tell me why we should allow lawlessness? Make me understand. Don't call me names. Tell me how I wish harm on the illegal. Tell me how your cause helps the plight of honest hard working legal immigrants. posted by

What information do you have their status as illegal????? Is it due to them not speaking english? Is it due to the color of their skin...how do you know what another perrson status is. Also, if you attempt to arrest someone who turns out to be a citizen...are you ready for the lawsuit that will be filed to take everything you own and for dening their civil rights? "How about 1940's era Nazi guard from Dachau prison." only followed the law of germany like so many good german christians...who were law abiding citizens.... Also...in your zeal to arrest someone who breaks the law...are going going to start arresting people who speed, fail to stop at a stop sign, who dont follow every law in the US? Where does it end? I am for protecting are boards...what I dont like is people seeing people who are hispanic and automaticly assuming they are illgeal due to hearing them speak spanish. posted by

SF you are purposely avoiding the problem.
You are denying there are illegals. Even while they stand in your face and admit to being illegal.
I have yet to address the question of identification. I will go on to that discussion after you give reason for lawlessness.
Address the problem of illegals that we both know exists. Setting up a straw man for others to throw darts at is avoiding the question.. Take a stand. What is your opinion of lawlessness.
Lawlessness by both the illegal and the illegal employer. What is your solution for a problem that we both know exists.
How do you pretend to help those illegals that we both know are being abused. Their humanity worthless in a farm labor camp on Comanche Drive.
There is one certainty that I will insist that you obey. The solution is not to call me racist. posted by

SF is in Boston area. He does not see the near 40% unemployment of the Valley farm Communities for 6 months out of the year. He believes the illegal does jobs Americans won't do. He believes the illegal works 14 hour days. He believes the illegal works 7 days a week 365 days a year. He doesn't understand that even a full time hard working citizen will qualify for welfare, because of the poor pay offered by the farm industry.. He believes illegals don't commit crimes. He doesn't believe there are murder warrants out for near one hundred illegals for just the LA County area alone.
That's what he believes. He could know the truth if he looked for it. TBC publishes un-employment statistic monthly. Those are truths. Those truths are in conflict with his beliefs. So he looks the other way and calls names. posted by

Martha it is supposed to be:
A hand up.. Not a hand out..
The American tax payer is subsidizing every employee that makes farm labor wages. At ten dollars a hour. Everyone will qualify for some type of welfare. Medical care through Medicare at a minimum.
The taxpayer is subsidizing the sweat and blood that the employer is drawing his wealth from..
The only solution for stopping this employer subsidy, is to insist on a living wage.
If we continue to flood the market with excess illegal employees. A living wage will never be achieved.
No part of capitalism claims a farmer should play 3 rounds of golf a week. No part of capitalism states that every farmer should dwell in a castle. No part of capitalism allows for the employer to have the taxpayer subsidize their employees wage so that the employer can be unjustly rewarded.
Capitalism does state that the land is worth what it will produce. If the land can not pay it's weight. The value of the land must be reduced. Not the value of mankind. Not the value of humanity.
You can not quench the thirst of a dieing man, by dragging him into the quicksand. It is better that you help your self out. Then lead him to water.
The plight of the American working wage. Is akin to quicksand. We must help our self. We must save ourself before we reach out to give a hand. It is inhuman to reach out and drag a man down.
Capitalism will always fail in the presence of criminality.
That is a basic tenet of capitalism. It is a tenet that must be obeyed. posted by

"If I make a citizens arrest on a Illegal immigrant. Am I a racist." you definitely are, but than you don't have to make an arrest to b prove your racist credentials, you do it on this blog everyday. As for Marylee her racist credential are unquestioned, and the Californian’s support of her racist views is equally well known. Super Dave Couch is another Couch is a very intelligent and effective Republican hose boy who until recently war was kept under wraps working under cover for the Abernathy group. Like all republicans in Red Kern and Bakersfield, Couch is well raw that they are sinking as a group so he is going to distinguish himself and separate himself from the sinking path, by calling on the old Casa Blanca line, “I am shocked that there are illegal immigrants in Bakersfield” in order to ingratiate himself and become Abernathy’s number one boy. But Couch is no slouch, Super Dave will ride this horse until someone stops him or he stumbles, which in racist As usual the substantial racist Republican crowd in But what the hell, this is In the next few month’s Couch will have the same cabal of Republican idiots on the Council marching lockstep behind him. Weir, the rookie Abernathy protégé will be the first, followed by Zack the quack Scrivner and legal alien from a friendly planet Harold Hanson . God’s envoy to Bakersfield Jacque Sullivan will also come into the fold, once she receives permission from God to light the cross at Super Dave’s firs Northwest rally to be held at Raul Rojas front lawn. Benham will like stick to her guns until she is promised another landmark project in her ward while Irma Carson will probably follow having to play defense to guard her minuscule turf as usual Nah folks these are not racists in the true sense of the word, they are even more disgusting , they are racists of opportunity. In reality this “alien” bashing was something whose time had come, and the only unsettled question was who was going to be Baker fields Lou Dobbs and Super Dave, having been cut out from his usual position of power and leadership on the Bakersfield City Council by a legal alien , was the logical choice. So now no more complaining about potholes or a failed park system or that white elephant swim park or even Couch free park , aliens are what we need to pursue. Incidentally, Chief Rector, it is time to sharpen up your Department shooting skills. Remember if you shoot an alien, they don’t sue if they survive and if they do not your rubber stamp investigate committee knows what to do. You will be praised and Super Dave will lead the cheers, it will not be too challenging either just shoot them on the front lawns in posted by

Red,
You wasted near half a page of this blog and gave no justification for the illegals. You gave no justification for the Asians that have over stayed their H-1 visas. The Indians who are overstaying their H-1's. You gave no justification for criminality. Criminality performed by both the illegal and the coyote employer. You expressed no sorrow for the student that can't find a job of any sort. No matter how hard he tries. Remember when you could get dad to run you out to the fields so you could earn ten bucks for the movie? You do not bother to explain why it is necessary to turn America's heritage upside down. You don't bother to explain why you would wish the American dream to vanish like a breeze.
You don't bother to explain why there is no Mexican Dream. Or Chinese Dream or Indian Dream?
You don't say anything unless it's roots are in hate. You call names and waste my time. posted by

We had a great time, made some money, got away from the adults for awhile and our lives are greater for the experience. Some of the best experiences were the nights we spent around the workers( illegal immigrants)," they" would talk about how this opportunity of their coming here and picking the produce for the Americans was the best thing that had ever happened to them, they had heard that when they grew up big enough to work in the fields, they could go on a trip and make enough money to send back to and support their entire family, and still pay for their own expenses, and they were living it. My sister and I got to ride in the tractors, and work with all the cool farm machinery, and learn about life from people who so appreciated daily living. So cry on about how while "they" are here, and sometimes they have to go to the hospital from heat exhaustion, or one of them comes down with an illness that prevents them from working, and not having insurance, and not wanting to die, they go to the charity hospital, and sit in the er while they risk a police office taking away everything they have, and then truly appreciate whatever treatment is offered, and go back and pick some more produce, so they can support their less fortunate family members. Next time you go buy produce, think of who picked it, would you buy shoes from a company that you knew treated it's employees like we treat our (invited) produce laborers, would you vote for a candidate who proclaimed such a platform, or buy from a vendor who benefited from such treatment? Jesus declared that only one test will determine who will come into his reign: whether one has treated the poor, the hungry, the homeless and the imprisoned as one would treat Jesus himself. ....Inasmuch as ye have done [it] unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done [it] unto me. Mary you want to talk about "weeping and gnashing of teeth; all that wide-eyed fear and trepidation" wait until your columns expressing you views of the poor are evaluated where it really counts. posted by

Wow, it seems that every conversation on this topic goes to the extreme. Ilegal immigrants are...... illegal. Making English the official language of Bakersfield does nothing to address the problem, only polarizes people more. Illegal immigrants are doing for there family the same thing you would do under the same circumstances The Mexican government is mostly to blame because the country is run by a handful of elitists who have all the money. The United States government officials aren't addressing the problem as much as politicizing it and using it to their own advantage either by not admitting there is a problem, or through fear mongering. The greatest nation that ever was, was built by immigrants. We should always be open to immigration. Because of our system, the best and brightest from across the globe have come here to be free to do their thing. A porous border has historically not been a problem....till now. It's a new world, we need to be careful about who gets in. There needs to be a comprehensive program that will identify and let workers from Mexico and other countries come to work. An effective I.D. system cannot occur without the cooperation of the Mexican government. If that government wants to continue to have U.S. dollars come into their country, then they better be on board with a new bracero type program. If they do not, and the U.S. decides to completely close the border, they will be in deep doo doo. and believe me, the day is coming when a huge attack occurs that will make the government put up the Berlin type wall and shoot to kill when people cross over. That's not the kind of nation I want. Our 'leaders', and I use the term loosely whether they be Republicans or Democrats, better get their act together.....soon.
