It's been only three years since that nightmare of a grocery strike here in Bakersfield, but already there are rumblings of another strike in the offing.
Union reps now negotiating with owners of Vons and Albertsons are looking to get back what they lost with their last contract, but they may be gearing up for a fight that few have the stomach for.
Talks between the United Food and Commercial Workers union and owners of Albertsons, Vons and Ralphs aren't going well. Major bones of...
Pass it on -- kindness is about to go global. It's been 14 years since Chuck Wall ignited a grass-roots movement in his Bakersfield College classroom and "random acts of kindness" became a national catchphrase.

Chuck Wall has retired as a BC professor, but is still a very busy man as the founder of Kindness Inc.
Teresa Leach, Chuck Wall's assistant will be traveling to Germany to hand out kindness grams and coins to wounded American soldiers.

Rudy Giuliani didn't make it to Bakersfield on his recent sweep through California, but it hardly mattered. Local Republicans could feel the love all the way from Sacramento.
If Giuliani was harboring any doubts about a run for president, they were apparently squashed last week during his appearance at the Republican state convention, where adoring delegates sporting "I love Rudy" buttons treated the former New York mayor to a raucous welcome.
There's no arguing that Giuliani is...
I'm starting to wonder how we Californians managed to raise our children before the 2004 election of Mountain View Assemblywoman Sally Lieber, who apparently is making up for lost time.
Lieber, as you recall, recently announced she's working on a bill banning spanking for children up to 3 years of age. This on the heels of legislation she introduced in December which, if passed, will require girls ages 11 and 12 to receive a vaccine designed to protect them from a sexually transmitted...
First Amendment fans can relax. Religious freedom is alive and well at O.J. Actis Junior High School.
For a while there, I wasn't so sure. Not after news broadcasts this weekend that reported a student at the school had been suspended for two days for writing "I love Jesus" on his backpack.
Outrageous, I thought. A clear violation of the student's First Amendment rights, I thought.
Not quite, as it turns out.
The student, according to news reports, was sent home after refusing...
Life was sweet for Sheryl Carr in the winter of 2005. The Bakersfield native loved her new life in Texas, where she and her family moved after son David signed on as quarterback for the Houston Texans.
Her days were filled with grandkids, football and family get-togethers -- a grandmother's dream. She was, in fact, enjoying one of those get-togethers at a high school basketball game, when her grandson Austin suddenly laid down on the gym floor. Granted, such behavior is not uncommon...
