Elemental Disruption

"Most people go through life dreading they'll have a traumatic experience. Freaks were born with their trauma. They've already passed their test in life. They're aristocrats." Diane Arbus

My life seems to operate sideways~ backwards almost~ and I have come to see thats right for me. A rain of snakes, disruption that cause's growth ,the world split in two.Everyone has there own path, mine has been one of thought, mostly of things folks today seem to disregard. Truth, personal integrity,politeness,...not all eschew these things. For me its been the easiest way to be~ any other way leads me to more trouble..and a sense of humor, above all about myself. Laughter keeps a person sane, and I enjoy seeing the coyote in myself~ the eternal trickster

Cowards,Comics, Race Conversation and the Big Picture

As is my want, I watched Bill Moyers last night and caught an excellent interview between Mr. .Moyer and one John McWhorter. With all the watermelon White House lawns, the Whiskey Flat Days float crisis and the Attorney Generals recent "cowards"comment ~ I thought some of you might fine this interesting.

”BILL MOYERS: That cartoon in the-
JOHN MCWHORTER: And so the chimpanzee cartoon.
BILL MOYERS: Yeah.
JOHN MCWHORTER: And so one might interpret the chimpanzee as Barack Obama being shot. And so the NAACP's most high-profile effort lately has been to protest that. And, okay. Now, you, Bill, and I, John, were smiling a little bit when we were going over the list of Macaca and Michael Richards and Don Imus. I think we both have to admit that once those things have fallen out of the news cycle and you look back on them a year or two later, it seems like it was kind of trivial.
You know, Seinfeld's Kramer had a meltdown on stage and used a bad word and that was all the news was for three weeks? How, how important was that in the grand scheme of how society operates, how America's going to really solve its problems? The chimp thing is going to be the same thing, you know? As we tape this today, it's still urgent. A month from now it's going to be, "Oh, yeah, that kerfuffle." I wish the NAACP would devote itself to community uplift because those are the things that are more important now.
In 1909 when the organization started I think we needed to deal with some bigotry and some racism. And that was the main issue. Black men were hanging from trees, and some women. That's what it was like then. That's what it was like in 1959. But this is 2009.
BILL MOYERS: The NAACP and Al Sharpton made a strong case that this was a racial slur, implying that Barack Obama is a monkey from the jungle. You know, I have to be honest and say I thought the cartoon was vulgar and violent. It was the violence in it. But I didn't think of it referring, alluding to Barack Obama. Does that mean I'm not sensitive enough to the caricatures of black people throughout the years?
JOHN MCWHORTER: Bill, no. Yeah, I saw it as violent, too. Like the blood, you know, I kind of felt that's a tacky cartoon. The idea that it was supposed to be Obama, I had to be taught that.
BILL MOYERS: Me too.
JOHN MCWHORTER: And, you know, if you didn't see that, my genuine question is, okay, Bill, you didn't see it. And you're probably representative of a lot of people. I don't see what problem that creates in terms of us living day by day in this society in 2009. It seems to me that whatever problem it created such as the infinitesimal chance that that cartoon might just teach some bozo to try to and not succeed in assassinating the president, in terms of degree, I think that we've got much larger problems.
And sometimes I think we have to learn not only from history 100 years ago but from history a few news cycles ago. The common wisdom, as you and I both know, not long ago was that Barack Obama couldn't win, that there was still enough racism out there that these people in diners talking about how they would never vote for a black man were going to tip the election. And, you know, they didn't. And they didn't even come close. We have to learn from that in thinking about what's out there, as it's often put. And what's most important, not what's out there. We all know what's out there. You can find it. Look for it and you'll find it. It might be next door to you. Does it matter? Does it matter in 2009? And I'm suggesting that these days it's not one of our larger problems. “”

Here is a link to the written transcript~ But I warn the English rules Nazi’s out there the first bit will likely upset you mightily~ but get past that to the meat of this mans most interesting and enlightening views. Food for thought.

Here you can watch~ it is a short segment but well worth your time.

Here's a teaser to get ya all started:

"BILL MOYERS: Let me say first that I want to thank you for making me comfortable splitting infinitives.

JOHN MCWHORTER: Good.

BILL MOYERS: I had two English teachers, Inez Hughes and Selma Brutsy, who would hang me by the thumbs if I did that.

JOHN MCWHORTER: Very good minded people. But that rule about split infinitives is a hoax. It's like hanging garlic in a doorway to ward off bad spirits."

Bill Moyers?  Hmm.  Something familiar about that name...  Oh yeah!

"Even Bill Moyers, a White House aide now best known as a liberal television commentator, is described in the records as seeking information on the sexual preferences of White House staff members. Moyers said by e-mail yesterday that his memory is unclear after so many years but that he may have been simply looking for details of allegations first brought to the president by Hoover."

aww dril~ you disappoint me~ the interviewee and your post of a few days back con-cure.Here I thought we may have found some common ground but true to form you attack the messenger not the message.

"Please comment on the subject of the post itself." Which is race relations with a side of language~not Bill Moyers. After all this time, the TOS still escapes you?

Splittin' hairs arn't we?  Bill Moyers' name is listed (boldly) about a half dozen times.  I've seen much less than that cause a blog drift.  But then I did point out hypocrisy of a respected member of the liberal left.  If I report myself, will Jason show mercy?

LOL~ drl...but my point is: the interviewee and your post the other day agree! I  agree too,but you seem to rather "lock horns" so go at it. Bill Moyers is in bold ,as is Mr.McWorhter it makes the reading easier,at least to me.

Just play nice. I hate to see you get restriction.

The cartoon brings to mind that several of Lincoln's associates referred to him as a "baboon." Political cartoons back then were less kind and not hindered by political correctness or sensitivity as nowadays. Given the caption and the dead chimp, I can't see how there can be any other inference than a slur toward the president. For these two journalists to dismiss the implication as misinterpretation and inconsequential is beyond the bounds of denial.

Well I thought it was an interesting conversation myself~ and that the joke is most certainly in the eye of the beholder.Comedies sole purpose, like Art,is not to make a person comfortable~ it is meant to enlist the exact opposite reaction.

What I most like is trying to move beyond the past~ that after an acknowledgment of past horrors, that we should all try to move forward.

I guess I was the only human that didn't see the humor in some freak throwing shoes at the President.  As mentioned in a blog post, at the beginning I simply thought, "Wow, what a quick reaction," when the President was able to duck in time.  Later, when I learned the true implication of shoes themselves being thrown at our President, I was a little more eager to take umbrage.  "Umbrage" is only in the eye of the beholder, apparently.

Incidentally, I thought the monkey cartoon in poor taste, when I hear about it (I did not actually see it).  On the other hand, it was never important enough to me to take the time to write about it.  The "players" themselves are far from being right in the public eye.  Many people haven't even heard of Moyers.  What's more, I haven't a clue as to McWhorter's identity.  I'm assuming he's some kind of TV "journalist"?  I guess if I have to ask ..........

You will get an answer:" With me is a man well suited to a discussion of Holder's speech and other matters. Professor John McWhorter is a veteran political commentator. He's also a scholar of linguistics, schooled in the meaning and nuance of language; a senior fellow at the conservative Manhattan Institute and a columnist for the NEW REPUBLIC magazine. He's written several books, including the best seller LOSING THE RACE, and these two published last year: OUR MAGNIFICENT BASTARD TONGUE: THE UNTOLD HISTORY OF ENGLISH and ALL ABOUT THE BEAT: WHY HIP HOP CAN'T SAVE BLACK AMERICA."

Never one to miss an opportunity to educate here is Bill Moyers Wiki page  http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

I first became acquainted with him through the excellent "Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth".He has has a varied and long career.Left main stream newscasting for PBS after he felt journalistic/news standards were declining.

His series "Faith and Reason" explored the question"In a world in which religion is poison to some and salvation to others, how do we live together?" with respected writers of faith and no faith.
