Dropouts and movie stars
Did anyone else watch Jay Leno last night?

Oscar winner Hilary Swank was on promoting her new movie "Freedom Writers" about a teacher who inspires inner city high school students. It was all fun and games until Leno  lobbed an a question at her about her own high school career. Apparently Swank is actually a high school dropout.

Hmmm. A high school dropout is starring in what's supposed to be an inspirational movie about the value of education? It struck me as odd — to say the least.

Will you see the movie? Will knowing this about Swank take away from it? Or does it not matter?

That's Funny, last nite I saw Billy Bush talking to "Marsha Brady" about  school where she admits cheating off other people's papers.  Wow, Marsha, Marsha, Marsha.......WOOF!

Perspective, I guess.  I read recently that only 16% of people here in Bakersfield have a degree. Just checked stats on high school dropout rate looks to be about 13%, here in Bakersfield.

Why can't kids understand "Only the Educated are Free!"

So she dropped out .. big deal. She is doing pretty good now. Who knows her reasons for her past decision?

Why should what SHE did affect your view of a movie?

JMO it does not matter.

Who's Hillary Skank?

I don't watch movies, period.  Short attention span.  I have maybe ten favorite movies -- and even then, I make good use of the fast-forward.

Hillary Swank

Not beautiful by Hollywood standards but a damn fine actress.

She is an actress..why would her education factor into a move role?

High school was the biggest time waster of my life. Had there been any alternative, I'd ask for a do-over.

Hehe, the irony is kind of funny.  I know many college students who think that high school was a waste of time, and generally I would probably agree.  It seems like you just jump through hoops until you get to the next stage (more school or a job).

As far as Hilary Swank (she played the pre-op transexual in Boys Don't Cry) I do not think it really matters she dropped out high school.  She is just an actress playing another role.  Now if the writer of the movie was a high school dropout...

she also touched base on it and said she believed the smart thing to do is graduate..give her a break she wasnt promoting kids to drop out...she was encouraging otherwise...

seems it will maybe inspire some kid ...that is the whole entire ideal....

We saw Freedom Writers on Friday. There was a bunch of semi-unruly teens all over the theater.

But they settled down during the movie and they paid attention to the truly inspirational performance and message from Hilary Swank and the students in the movie.

It did not matter one bit whether Swank was a dropout. Her movie many influence many others to stay in.
