schuster80 - > Retail Rumblings -> Home Depot going into old Zody's on Ming
Home Depot going into old Zody's on Ming
The Home Depot will move into the long vacant building formerly occupied by Zody’s department store on Ming Avenue near Stine and Akers later this year. Click here to read story.
What do you think about finally having a permanent tenant for the building, which also housed Builders Square?  Was it long overdue?  Had the building become an eyesore?  Will this spark more development of the Ming Avenue corridor?

Yes the building had become an eyesore. I think close to 30 years being dark is a little overdue. This property was formerly owned by the fine folks at KMART, who bought it simply to prevent anyone one else going in there. When KMART went through bankruptcy they finally had to divest of many properties like this one. Bankruptcy worked out great for KMART, in that they got a bunch of cash while getting rid of a bunch of debt and then went out and bought up Sears. Cities that had a bunch of blighted properties thanks to these corporate clowns might finally see an improvement or two.

Yah, yah, I'll believe it when I see it.  How many other businesses were going to move into that building and didn't?

Another Home Depot???

Geez, some actual different choices for home/gardening equipment would be nice rather than the same stuff at both HD and Lowes. The current Home Depot stores aren't all that busy, I'm a little surprised they would open another one in between the two. What are they Starbucks or something?

Pete, do you mean the "starbucks of home improvement"? :)
posted by randomfactor on Jan 25, 2007 at 04:04 PM
I'd like an alternative, as Home Depot has joined Wal-Mart on my list of "stores I'll never walk into again."
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Jan 25, 2007 at 04:04 PM
That does have a nice ring to it.

Well, Pete, there is the OSH on Ming and Ashe where the Safeway used to be.  It'll be good to have something in that space finally, but we'll see how long they last.

Home Depot is on your s**t list random? why? The executives?
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Jan 25, 2007 at 04:19 PM
Yes, I have been to Sears...I mean OSH on Ming. I love the Craftsman stuff! It always seems to smell like pest repellent though. What's up with that?

Home Depot has some of the worst inventory control I've ever seen. Ever try to find something you don't see on the shelf? I had one guy looking for a lamp that the computer said they had 5 of (they had none). And that was a day or 2 after they did inventory.

I remember when Buck Owens participated in Zody's grand opening on that site one very hot summer morning way back in the early 1970's.  He had his official bus there and was passing out autographed b&w pictures.  I wonder if Merle Haggard will participate in the grand opening of the proposed new Home Depot ??

Yes, the executive behavior.  They're also a totally "red" store.  Lowe's is at least purple.
posted by dusty1215 on Jan 25, 2007 at 04:22 PM
I never thought about it that way..but your right..Lowe's is purple..and Home Depot is surely red :)

A fourth Home Depot is great for Bakersfield. I love the hot dogs there. I hope they put in a hot dog stand like Rosedale Hwy they serve hot dogs, burritos, tacos, chicken. WOW great food and great serves

Pete, I know this seems weird, but besides a lot of stuff being stolen, a lot falls behind the shelves.  I was working on a project where I needed a ton of a certain product and they would only bring it into the store about 6 containers at a time.  So I start poking around and find 10 are on the floor between the shelves.
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Jan 25, 2007 at 04:40 PM
Tom, that doesn't make me feel much better about Home Depot. You'd think they would keep things in better order than that. I've never had that problem at Costco and they use similar shelving. It's just generally a sloppy place to shop.

Instead of another useless Home Depot, how about a Super WalMart, or another Sam's Club!....... and, yes I'm serious!

I don't like Home Depot either. It's definitely off my list.  I call it "Home Desperate" because I only go there when I have to. I had a couple of run-ins re: returning items etc. The salespeople are generally unfriendly, ignorant and/or unhelpful. Everything is disorganized. I like the setup in Lowe's a lot better.

I like OSH best of all, even if it's Sears. They usually have what I need if I'm just going for the basics.

I agree with those who wish something different would go in there.....like a HUUUGE TJ Maxx (LOL). The existing Home Depots are convenient enough for everyone, I think.

Also...think what it's going to do to the traffic on Ming right around there, which is already a mess!

I don't like Home Depot because I am the guy in the commericals. Sure, anyone can build a tree house, just come down to our store & ask the experts & they will help! Every time I have went there to complete a home project the "experts" have no idea what they are talking about! ....and you ask why do I want a WalMart/Sam's Club. Sure, they may take advantage of the lower income, but aleast they have a job, some self respect and off my tax rolls! Not to mention, Sam's Club does offer pretty good deals!

I want an IKEA in the spot.  (They could at least sell stuff out of their grapevine warehouse...)
posted by dusty1215 on Jan 25, 2007 at 05:06 PM
IKEA is good!
posted by theColorNine on Jan 25, 2007 at 05:20 PM

That location seems to be the Bermuda Triangle of retail; just like where California Choice and whatever happens to be on the northeast corner of Stockdale Hwy and California Ave are the Bermuda Triangles of restaurants.   Businesses keep disappearing.

Yeah, why don't they put an IKEA in this town, aren't we good enough, dad gum!

I'd love a Crate & Barrel.

I THINK ITS GREAT THAT SOMEBODIES MOVING INTO THAT VACANT BUILDING WHO CARES WHO IT IS THEY WILL BRING LIFE BACK TO THAT CORNOR
posted by dougglendower on Jan 25, 2007 at 11:20 PM

First off, I've loved the look of the old Zody's building. Now knowing it was owned by KMart, I'm puzzled why they didn't move into that building rather than the Wilson Road building. Sure they were able to put up a freeway side sign, but since there was no access to Wilson Road and Ming Ave dumps you into the mall, it seems counter productive.

While I am happy the site is no longer vacant, I do have qualms about it being a Home Despot. I've only met one person who knew what the heck they were about at a Home Despot, and they were a handyman before working there. No, I don't want an Ikea. Or a Pier One. Or any other chain that's not interested in providing a service for me. But I'm an old fashoned kinda guy who thinks wicker furnature is for his cat's sole pleasure. But in this age of limited choices and superstores, I guess it's a miracle we get someone in there at all. I never thought that the Zody's building would outlast Ardan's and BEST, but through KMart's greed, OfficeMax and FoodMaxx... that's odd... were able to prove a six year old wrong.

Pete, I wasn't trying to make you feel better about them.  I only go there when I know what I need and know it's not locked up.  I use the self check out most of the time and get in and get out.  It was more of a user tip than a recommend.
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Jan 26, 2007 at 08:30 AM
I know Tom. I pretty much do the same as you. Unfortunately it's the closest "hardware" store to my house. Whatchagonnado?

At least I can shop there and not have to talk to anybody if I don't want. I'll also be returning some frozen plants soon.

Another Home Depot Huh, well maybe there trying to improve this side of town you know giving the hint of redo your home it looks ...like well you get the point.
posted by soltini on Jan 27, 2007 at 11:10 AM
just more traffic on ming ave . I bet our city planners didn't research that huh. The city council has never seen a big box "CASH" project it didn't like. who cares about the traffic problem.
posted by NancyII on Jan 27, 2007 at 05:14 PM

If you guys are unhappy about the location of the new Home Depot you should try being on the far north side of town where there are NO big box stores and NO home improvement stores.  The closest thing is Wattenbarger and they are really limited.  I needed electrical tape on a Sunday and ended up paying about 3 bucks for a roll at RITE AID for pitys sake.  (Wattenbarger isn't open on Sunday)   I could have driven the 6-7 miles to the closest HD or Lowes but by then I would have spent more than that in gas.  And in raw traffic nerves.

I needed printer cartridges a few weeks ago and had to drive that 6-7 miles just to get them.  Now bear in mind..there ain't no easy way to travel to the Rosedale highway corridor without a ton of lights and lots of traffic.

Nancy, you should have tried Floyd's on Chester right before the bridge. People tend to forget it is there.
posted by NancyII on Jan 27, 2007 at 06:23 PM

Anon, I did.  I've always liked Floyds because they have oddball stuff there.  I could have run over there for the tape but it didn't seem like it was worth the effort.   I got a little grumpy with them just before Christmas when a clerk ordered an ice cream freezer for me as a present for my son.  When I called about it no one knew anything about it and the one who supposedly ordered it wasn't there and on and on.  I didn't even bother to check back.  Another time I drove there looking for S-hooks and they only had one in the size I needed.  The main problem I see with them is that they don't do the volume of the big stores and have a smaller number of each item.  It's frustrating to go there and then have to also drive the extra distance.

It's almost worth it though because that's the only place I can find Slathers Sour Cherry Balls.

Fortunately we live closer to the one on S. Chester and they have always been better stocked in the hardware dept..

posted by NancyII on Jan 27, 2007 at 06:50 PM
You're right.  The one on S. Chester is a better one.  It's bigger and cleaner too.  I went there when I lived in that area.  My grandson liked to go there with me because they had a great gun counter.  I still liked the sour cherry balls.  LOL

I think it is ironic that a big box retailer is opening another store and we are talking about the little local hardware store.

posted by NancyII on Jan 27, 2007 at 09:18 PM

Irv..one of the things I like about Floyds is that when you can't find some old fashioned odd thing, you might find it at Floyds.  Last year I went to get my lawnmower blade sharpened there because no one in the big stores sold that size.  The guy looked at it and told me they couldn't sharpen that kind of blade because it was notched and why didn't I just buy a new one.  I explained that I'd tried and couldn't find one.  He said.."oh..I think I have one for it"...walked to a shelf checked it against mine..it fit..and I was on my way.

And I love those sour cherry balls...tart sweet and chewy.

Hey Pete, your plants reminded me of this story from a year ago: http://www.boingboing.net/2...

My requirement for a good hardware store is coffee.  If you can get coffee in the front, you know they aren't trying to push you through.  As for Home Depot, not a lot to talk about there.  It'll be nice to have something in that strip.  Maybe they can put a Starbucks in there too.  ;)

Hey, does anybody remember when the store was White Front?
posted by NancyII on Jan 31, 2007 at 09:04 PM
White Front was where Mervyns is now.  The roof caved in once during a heavy fainy season and that's where the wedding band I had came from.  Still have it in fact.
posted by tonyh on Jan 31, 2007 at 09:28 PM
That's right, Mervyns is where White Front was. There was a Builders Supply across the parking lot. I can't remember the name now, but they had a Beaver as an advertising mascot........................Maybe it was called Builders Emporium. Is that right? What's in that building now?
posted by NancyII on Jan 31, 2007 at 09:34 PM
Builders Emporium became Vons.  Now it's just an empty store...although I did hear something was going in there.  I had forgotten about Builders Emp.
posted by anonymous on Jan 31, 2007 at 10:07 PM
Burlington Coat Factory is going in there, I was at the UPS store and noticed that they had the whole west wall torn out of the building to expand it.
posted by NancyII on Jan 31, 2007 at 10:14 PM
Ah yes..I remember that now.  I knew it was something but couldn't remember what.
