Airline to add Bakersfield service
ExpressJet is launching a new airline carrier and plans to begin service to Bakersfield and 23 other midsized cities, including Fresno, this spring. The new airline, which plans to add routes that currently do not have non-stop service, has not yet released flight schedules and would not confirm which city or cities it will fly to from Bakersfield.
Does Bakersfield need more airline service?  Whenever I fly out of LAX, I always seem to bump into plenty of people from Bakersfield.  Airport Bus of Bakersfield also seems to be pretty busy.  What do you think?

This is exciting for Bakersfield. Ryan, can you investigate and see if ExpressJet will be offering any introductory flight discounts?

We need cheap flights to Vegas and the Bay Area and back. Currently I think you still have to fly through Phoenix if you want to go from Vegas to Bak. Usually they seem to have "problems with the plane" when there aren't enough passengers, so you tend to get stuck at the PHO airport for way longer than necessary.

We do need more service out of BFL, its a given to me. We have the population to sustain at least travel to some main cities like LA, Las Vegas and San Diego I would think. I know I would use it if it went to San Diego and LV.

I would be overjoyed to have direct flights to Tucson. San Diego and Sacramento. I've got my fingers crossed on this one. I agree with Pete that PHO seems to have an "agenda" with light passenger loads. I was stuck for 4 or 6 hours or so, a couple  of times, when I tried to get back from Tucson to Bako. I HATE PHO!!!!!! I know every manager in every gift shop in that whole godforsaken terminal.

But if the flights are $400 round trip , forget about it. They need to be half that.

Did they tell you they had mechanical problems too, Termite? There's only so many times that lie will work.

Thanks for those tips dinbri. For me, the long drive to LAX is hard on my three blown discs..so I would probably suck it up and pay the extra money.

Yeah, Pete. I never saw so many mechanical failures on planes flying out of BFL to PHO on the 6:30 Friday flight! They really ought to hire some better mechanics! I've learned not to wait if that particular flight is late. I just throw a VERY LOUD fit, tell them I don't want to spend the night in Phoenix at my own expense (because I ain't stayin' at La Casa De Pollos), and that I have a 7 AM meeting in Tucson which is very important to the major stockholders of my world-renowned fashion design company.  (Well, OK, I cry). I usually get my money back eventually, although it's not for weeks.

dinbri, thanks for those tips. But time is real important to me when I'm taking a weekend flight to Tucson. I want to GET there friday night and BE there till mid-afternoon Sunday.

Why do those short hops have to be so expensive?

Why did Bill Thomas have to build such a small airport then?

You heard the old adage "small hands small airport".

There is a direct flight to Vegas every Friday night, I believe at about 9:00 p.m..  I have booked several trips to New York and Dallas out of BFL.  While, you have to go to Las Vegas or Phoenix first, you can make a two stop flight within $40 of the LAX fare.  Given the inconvenience of the bus, or driving and parking at LAX, it is well worth the difference.

Bakersfield's new ExpressJet service will begin on May 14 with two flights a day to and from San Diego. From what I hear, one-way tickets will run $69-129 with round-trip tickets costing between $138 and $258. They are holding a press conference later today to announce this at Meadows. Bakersfield's flights to and from Houston, currently being operated by ExpressJet are not expected to change.
