Was she on medication, drunk? What on earth would someon say somethign as stupid as this???Sharon Stone Calls Chinese Earthquake "Karma"

When is a natural disaster a good thing? When the afflicted country commits human rights violations -- at least according to Sharon Stone.
Sharon Stone
Stone gave an interview while on the red carpet at Cannes this weekend in which -- after recounting all of China's atrocities -- she wondered, "All these earthquake and stuff happened and I thought, 'Is that karma?' When you are not nice that bad things happen to you." My name is Sharon!

Sharon went on to say she has come around and no longer thinks the death of over 60,000 people is cosmic payback. "Basic Instinct 2" is a whole other story.

If we want to know what's really happening in the world we should all ask a rich, dysfunctional celeb living in her insulated bubble. They have all the answers. And Sharon Stone proves it. I would have never guessed that 80,000 deaths from a natural catastrophic disaster is karma.

She can put her lips somewhere...

She talks about "putting your head down and being a servant." I've been her devoted slave ever since I saw her in those leather pants in "The Quick and the Dead," but every time I approach her, her boduguards pound me so badly that I end up in intensive care. I mean really...

From the same sorts of folks who said that we had 9-11 coming. Like Alec Baldwin said that if Bush won in 2000 he would leave the country... as far as I know he still lives here..... too bad... I wish he would leave and take about 1000 of his A-hole buddies with him.

You guys said it all--and better than I could have said it!  Bravo!  : )

Yeah like michael moore and rosie odonnell....I dont think they even have lips because their mouths are always open.

There is no such thing as karma...more's the pity.  If there were, Bush would be lying in a hospital bed with IED-inflicted brain injury and a bill from the Defense Department for the lost helmet.

Make your own karma, RF.  Strap on vest and be a hero for all the Left.  I'll sure miss ya...

Hmmm.....

The people who make Chinese political policies are high ranking communist officials.  The people who died in the earthquake were poor with no political power.  Americans complain about China's numerous human rights' violations, but don't hesitate buying cheap products made in China because it costs less, which has caused numerous amounts of Americans to lose manufacturing jobs.  Meanwhile president Bush is telling us that shopping equals patriotism, while we owe millions of dollars to China from loans the US has taken. The solution---cut back on spending and try to buy items made in the USA.

The people who died in Katrina were poor with no political power.

posted by drilnliftcrude on May 26, 2008 at 05:45 PM

They and their families may have been poor, but their survivors had the political power to re-elect ol' "School Bus" Ray Nagin.

Sure ya will, dril. Thing is, it's the right-wing fundamentalists who tend to go out in such a blaze of stupidity.    Know why there are no atheists in foxholes?   They have the good sense to be elsewhere.

posted by johnburnssucks on May 26, 2008 at 07:09 PM

jfrancais, that's because most had been relying on the government for everything from housing to toilet paper for 40 years. Those who choose to leave the plantation are those who earn the ability to possess political power.

Yes, New Orleans local govt could have done more to evacuate NO before Hurricane Katrina, but the levees were built by the national govt, which failed.  The Army Corps of Engineers knew the levees would fail, but the federal govt never upgraded the levees to withstand a storm.  And it isn't just the  levees in New Orleans, the national infrastructure needs a great deal of repair.  Watch Spike Lee's movie When the Levees Broke for more info.

Also, a story on NPR said that a school that collapsed in China was built faulty.  And what is even worse, a school building/room that was completed to withstand earthquakes was rented out to a business instead of going to the kids.  China and the US both need to upgrade its infrastructure.

Damn.  Her manager is probably peeved right now.  I hate it when people feel like they have to make a bad situation worse by assigning some larger influence.  An earthquake is an earthquake.  A tsunami is a tsunami.  A tragedy is a tragedy.  They're not random, but the earth doesn't set out to "punish" people.

She looks and sounds loaded to the gills.  She's starting to remind me of Bridget Neilson.

posted by jfrancais on May 26, 2008 at 08:03 PM

That may be, JBS. But how are we above the Chinese commies if we forsake ours that have no policital power (whether by choice or not)? Are they less worthy of humane treatment because they "decide" to rely on the government?

Summary: HUH? Karma???? What kind of statement is that? Stupid, stupid, stupid!

posted by sagefever on May 27, 2008 at 07:25 AM

The concept of Karma would affect those who inflicted harm, not innocent lives, and often it is not tit for tat per RF's example, and even more often it is not for us to understand. But to claim karma did it,well lets just be charitable and say she could do more research on the concept.

Only good thing about "karma":  It's sometimes good for running dogma over with...

Sharon Stone is beautiful but dumb.   She's  an intellectual pygmy who should practice the art of thinking before opening her mouth.

By her reasoning, the same people who are victims of China's civil right violations are now, deservedly,  victims of Karma's atrocities.  They can't catch a break.

A bigger question is why anyone would bother asking her opinion on any subject outside of her expertise.

posted by randomfactor on May 27, 2008 at 07:43 AM

Actually, Stone has a very high estimated IQ, (higher than mine even :)--although I don't know where the estimate came from.  Reminds me of my distinction between "intelligence" and "cleverness."

If  that is not absolute proof that IQ is a dubious measure of overall worth to society, I don't know what is....................

They got Bush's wrong, too... :)

Random

Some of the dumbest people I've ever met had above average I.Q.'s.   I.Q. only means the ability to learn not what you actually know.   Sharon Stone hasn't taken the trouble to learn much.

And what has that got to do with my initial question?

"A bigger question is why anyone would bother asking her opinion on any subject outside of her expertise".

it gets back to her basic instinct

Boy a lack of a humorous bone....all the ex in-laws were off the chart IQ wise, they could think circles around me,but socially not so much grace. Now there are some 7 "types" of intelligence recognized.

BTW<Chico, one said ex-in-law was the guy who interpreted those blips on the screen and kept us recognizing what was a bombing raid and what wasn't. LOL

Wow.  So everyone deserves what they get?  From the people in NOLA to the people who've died in hurricanes in Tennessee, Alabama, and Arkansas, they all deserved to die?

posted by johnburnssucks on May 27, 2008 at 08:56 AM

I knew a guy in San Diego who had an IQ of approximately 140 - but very little common sense - who told a Sheriff's deputy to "shut the f**k up" one night, and wouldn't go back into his house when the deputy told him to. He wasn't under the influence of anything but stupidity, and he spent the next 46 hours in jail.

posted by johnburnssucks on May 27, 2008 at 09:01 AM

Tom, not all deserved to die, but many did. Many who died unfortunately did so because they stayed with hardheaded others who took a macho "we don't evacuate" attitude toward the impending disaster. Those hardheaded people deserved to die, and hopefully others will learn from their mistakes, although I doubt it.

Sage, I think I must be one of your ex-in-laws.  LOL

I've always been awkward in social situations.  I do my best to be tactful and think before I speak, but I've noticed over the years that my nervousness in social situations has merely increased with every remembrance of dorky things I've said.  Now I hardly ever say anything at all when I'm in mixed company.  It's a snowball effect.  I don't think that's what happened here with Sharon Stone (she doesn't strike me as the cringing wallflower type.)  I think she was high.

posted by sagefever on May 27, 2008 at 09:32 AM

LOL~ Cat,I'm just to dumb to feel awkward ...just try to keep 'em laughing is my motto! "deserve to die"~ what a concept, especially in natural disasters, especially in one we could have helped alleviate years before they occurred, ala NOLA.The levies, the bridges, the dams etc in this country need looking to.

posted by johnburnssucks on May 27, 2008 at 10:37 AM

Sage, the levees were supposed to have been fixed when LBJ was in office. He didn't get it done, nor did Nixon, Ford, Jimmuh, or anyone else.

The solution? Live in Bakersfield.

posted by witterpitters on May 27, 2008 at 10:53 AM

JBS:  Live in Bakersfield???  and do what when the cracked Isabella dam breaks?  Who lives closest to the school bus barn? My husband knows how to 'hotwire' :-)

posted by johnburnssucks on May 27, 2008 at 11:13 AM

Here's the solution, witters:

Note the cool "hang loose" signs she's giving. Bakersfield surf rats...

Here's a happy ending in NOLA; a kitty rescued by Sgt. Jason Smith:

Sgt. Jason Smith of New Orleans walks through floodwaters in the 2800 block of Calhoun Street with a cat he rescued while patrol

One cat is worth 1000 people.

Thats good because apparently those small children that lived or were born while their folks lived in thise FEMA trailers look like they will have life long health problems!

What did that woman think she was doing getting pregnant while living in a FEMA trailer? She's in a situation where she has to live in a handout trailer, but she still goes ahead and gets knocked up as though she were living on Easy Street! She let her hormones override whatever infinitesimal amount of common sense she had, and therefore got exactly what she deserved.

posted by sagefever on May 27, 2008 at 12:00 PM

She obviously thought that the government had provided her and her family a safe place to live, and that soon their home would be rebuilt . You'll notice the couple are both working? And ,as always your generosity and bigness of heart are noted. We should all be so superior.

posted by randomfactor on May 27, 2008 at 12:01 PM

Of course, the government should've been there to help those *ALREADY* pregnant get abortions before moving into those trailers, right?   You *DID* read the article, right?

.

Did you hear the one about how FEMA had to buy back a bunch of those trailers at 2-3 times what they sold them for?

posted by johnburnssucks on May 27, 2008 at 12:20 PM

Yes, Random, I read it. Katrina occurred in late August 2005; the woman's daughter is fifteen months old, and tack onto that a nine-month gestation period. Twenty-four months, which means she got knocked up well after her house was gone. She was not already preganant; she got that way after the disaster. What made her think that she was entitled to engage in normal behavior - sex - while she was in that situation? She was thinking with her [bleep] instead of her brain, which is why she and her daughter are in the situation they are in. She made the decision, now she can deal with the consequences of that decision. Welcome to life, sister.

Sage, I don't presume to be superior, only brutally realistic.

posted by sagefever on May 27, 2008 at 12:25 PM

No that's just what you tell yourself. brutal perhaps but realistic? sometimes, others not so much..case in point:the other children that were alive before Katrina and now have respiratory problems....leave them out of it for a reason?

posted by randomfactor on May 27, 2008 at 12:30 PM

What about those who *WERE* already pregnant at the time?  And those like this woman, who had just gone through a flipping hurricane?   I contributed to Planned Parenthood after Katrina specifically to provide birth control and abortion assistance to the survivors, but in any event how was she to know the trailers provided by the Bush Administration would poison her and her kid?   I mean, aside from their proven track record...
