Effigy of Palin Hanging by Noose is Halloween Fun, Owner Says

Ghosts, goblins, gargoyles . . . and Sarah Palin hanging by a noose?

That's the latest imagery of the Republican vice presidential candidate and her running mate John McCain on display at a West Hollywood home that has been decorated for Halloween.

The outdoor decor features a mannequin dressed as Palin, wearing a red business suit, eyeglasses and brunette beehive wig, hanging by a noose off the chimney. Right above her, a devilish John McCain emerges from the chimney with paper flames surrounding him.

Some neighbors say it's just wrong to depict a vice presidential candidate that way.

Chad Michael Morisette, who lives in the house, told CBS 2 News that the effigy would be out of bounds at any other time of year, but it's within the spirit of Halloween.

"It should be seen as art, and as within the month of October. It's Halloween, it's time to be scary, it's time to be spooky," Morisette said.

Several locals and tour buses have swung by the house to snap photos of the scene, and some gawkers say it is humorous. Morisette acknowledged to FOX 11 news that had he depicted Barack Obama in the same scene, it would not have gone over as well, because the history of a hanged black man in America is a lot more intense than a hanged white woman.

FOX 11 reported that the scene may also have been a response to a false rumor that recently circulated in the area that drag queens were to be banned from dressing up as Palin for the annual West Hollywood Halloween carnival costume party on Santa Monica Boulevard. The drag race and pageant were held Sunday evening, and no costume was forbidden.

With Election Day fast approaching, Palin effigies aren't the only sign of over-the-top political bitterness.

CBS 2 News also reported that another homeowner in the Los Angeles area had his Obama yard sign vandalized with a racial slur.

"I think the word says more about the person who wrote it than anything," homeowner John McNamara told CBS 2 News.

The FBI and Los Angles Police Department are reportedly investigating the incident.

Sara gets hung in  West Hollywood and the gays ridicule her in a street parade...then they all sit around laughing about it..

Obama gets some sign graffiti and they call out the FBI?????

This bovine excrement is getting out of control..

Sioux, I am so sorry.  This tears my heart out.  It makes me sick.

I would think more of your blog, Sioux, if you had made a similar complaint when Senator Obama was hung in effigy at George Fox University in late September or in Fairfield Ohio a couple of weeks ago, but I don't recall you being outraged at that particular time.

And what is all of this bovine excrement about "the gays".  (1)  We all don't think alike, and we all don't act alike. (2) I don't know if Chad Morisette is gay and neither do you. A lot of straight people, believe it or not, live in West Hollywood.

I personally think the whole thing is in bad taste, but a lot worse things have been done in this campaign by both sides.

Considering real life events of late, local altercations, the foiled murder/assassination attempt on Sen. Obama and that this is one of the most high tension elections in recent memory~ this is ,IMHO,tasteless.

I have to add a personal story. One Halloween, for my sons special ed. class,I planed a little party for all the children. I brought in some food for the staff, decorated the room with crepe paper and brought in decorated balloons. I had drawn moons, cats, witches,a tombstone with R.I.P. and other seasonal icons. The teacher pulled me aside and asked me to remove the R.I.P. balloons~ because in all likely-hood some of the children would die before their time, and parents might become upset. Naturally I did remove the balloons~ but it never occurred to me that particular icon could be considered offensive.

I was so caught up in the season, that "over the top" never entered my mind.I would hope this man comes to a similar conclusion.

its all crap crap crap..the sign owner calls out the feds instead of just tearing it down and putting up another one?? they are as much to blame for perpetuating this BS as anyone..just had to get their 15 minutes of fame..and who's to say it wasn't the owner themselves?? lots of stranger things have happened down in that neck of the woods..

The Palin hanging isn't funny..its mean spirited and it is as degrading to Sara as the (edit) was on the Obama sign..wheres the agents out defending her honor..making them tear it down at the very least..this election is too inflamed..they are allowing them to insight a possible show of violence..what if some one gets hurt ..who's fault is that..its called defusing the situation..

how would any of you feel if during all these heated debates on TBC you saw an effigy of you hanging around downtown with a bus tour load of gawkers driving by..its inexcusable for any of the candidates to be strung up that way..

well gee goph can you see your shadow yet??

I didnt know about the Obama hanging..sorry contrar to how you perceive me I do miss an occasional piece of news..and there you go again..i never said the hang man was gay..it doesnt say that in the report....(however now that you brougt it up ..I wouldnt doubt the chances of it being true.)...got your guns all cocked and ready this AM I see..

as far as the gays just havin fun?? lets have em celebrate where they all dress up with big ears and dark skin..see how that goes over..

Simply providing an opposite view, Sioux. Oh, and where in the news report does it say "the gays" sat around and laughed about it?

"defuse the situation" ~ hard to put into practice I know ,but we all could do with some deep breaths. there have been at least 3 acts of stupidity regarding Obama, that I know of and then there is yesterdays foiled plot.

I would hope we could all agree that these kinds of behaviors are not in the public interest.

Yeah, that is totally sick.  What in the world is happening to this country?  We are becoming more and more polarized and reactionary.  We're turning into a bunch of blood-thirsty anarchists.

The first two blogs I read this morning are an Obama assassination plot and a hanging Sarah Palin effigy.  DOES ANY OF THIS STRIKE ANYONE ELSE AS FREAKIN CRAZY????

I think I'll take my sanity ball and go home now.

posted by CatherineBaker on Oct 28, 2008 at 09:16 AM

LOL Witters!  We can play catch with our sanity balls out in the hills until this election is over.  Haha!

It has reached a height unseen,to me anyway,in this country.

But I take heart~ there is good in this world, and always there is hope.

Feet firmly planted ,I stand for those concepts.

I remember the elections of '68 and '72.  Compared to them, this little bruhaha is a tea party.

'68 particularly was a "what if" election.  The night he won the California primary Robert Kennedy was shot and killed.  If he had survived he certainly would have been the Democratic candidate, and the Presidental election would have been Robert Kennedy vs. Richard Nixon.  How different things might be now, 40 years later.

witters~  the song "Hard Headed Woman" was written for me! I will die with good in my heart and hope on my lips. Besides if my feet are in cement, some of you might be tempted to send me fishing! ;-P

gopherbro~ Your right those were bad times, I recall them well. I hope we maybe in the last thralls of that time and those concepts that so divided us as a people.

I do have a tendency to "be here now"....

I was born in '72--the year "American Pie" came out.  '72 in this country was a lot like how it is now--very sad and polarizing and negative.

Something touched me deep inside the day the music died.  Bye bye Miss American Pie.

To me the late '60s and early '70s can be summed up in one song, Eve of Destruction.
