I've heard of or read about some of the artifacts you posted. We often give our ancient ancestors less credit than they deserve for figuring things out. I don't recall the details, but an ancient Greek invented a prototype steam engine. DaVinci left drawings of concepts that could be applied to the helicopter. The "battery" you mentioned is a fact. In biblical times it was used for electroplating small idols. Discoveries have set the Iron Age back to earlier times than was thought. Ancient cultures in China, Africa and South America independently invented writing. Architecture and astronomy based on complex math have been uncovered. Ancient seafaring cultures (who later became Polynesians) carried maps of ocean currents. Vikings carried a rude but effective compass. I was lucky to see the Mayan ruins of Tikal. It is true that the stones are so tightly fitted a pen knife cannot be inserted between them. In some places where erosion and weathering have not taken a toll, a piece of paper cannot be slipped in between the stone blocks of free-standing structures. The ancient Romans discovered cement. Skeletal remains of a mammoth were discovered with arrowheads embedded in the matrix (rock-hard solidified ground around the fossil) in New Mexico. As always, many of the "unexplainable" discovered artifacts are hoaxes. Some of them are pretty darn elaborate. As to space aliens sharing technology, I don't even consider the possibility. That speculation is akin to saying a space aliens showed the Wrights how to make an airplane or Edison how to make a light bulb; after all, nobody else knew how to do it with technology that didn't exist. I won't get into the science of dating methods, I've posted more than I intended. Take my word, modern dating puts the age into the ballpark. They're accurate. I agree, a good many happenstance discoveries are fascinating and make for fun discussion and speculation. Thanks for posting, I enjoyed it. posted by

The Antikythera Mechanism--Mechanical calendar The Coso Artifact--it *IS* a spark plug. No, the rock's not that old. Most of the others long-since debunked, but fun to think about anyway. The Grooved Spheres --based on a report in Weekly World News, the tabloid which brought you Bat Boy.
