Atheist rips into presidential oath
Avowed atheist Michael Newdow, infamous for his attacks against references to God in the Pledge of Allegiance and the national motto, now wants to remove all religious references from Barack Obama's inauguration.
Newdow, who in past legal battles has tried to strip the United States currency of a reference to God and has sued to alter the pledge of allegiance in schools, now wants to alter history. Newdow wants the president-elect barred from a traditional reference to God in the oath of office -- "so help me God" -- because those words are not in the oath set out in the Constitution. He also wants two prayers by well-known Christian figures cancelled. Revs. Rick Warren and Joseph Lowery are scheduled to deliver inaugural prayers on January 20.

So it is OK to violate the separation of church and state by imposing his own minority religion on the rest of the country. Sadly another irrational, marginalized individual seeking his 15 minutes of fame;(

I may be wrong, but isn't this the same guy who was exposed by his daughter as a liar when he made the claim that SHE was the one offended by tthe pledge of alligance? I have always been of teh same opinion as Ling; stop whining and considering yourself above others whos beliefs differ from yours Calling someone any name because their views differ from yours only proves your immaturity and lack of tolerance. .I am a believer, but not a church guy. I have no issues with those without faith, be they athiests or agnostics, I have no issues with those of differing beliefs. All I ask is that they give me the same respect I give them by not shoving their belief, or lack of it, on me. I rarely get what I ask for. posted by

Well, as the lone atheist (and naturist) in Bakersfield, I suppose I should comment; I think this guy is out of line. I couldn't care less if "God" is mentioned in the oath, printed on our money or in the Pledge. Who cares? As an atheist the concept of God is meaningless (also sad and pointless) to me. Many of the people who say those words don't really believe in God anyway, or if they do, it's just for show or to hedge their bets, as it were. They could say "In the Cosmic Blueberry we Trust" for all I (or any atheist) should care. Separation of church and state means that the government should not discriminate against, endorse, enforce any religion, or lack there of, of any kind. Nor should those of you who call yourselves religious discriminate against me for not being so. This guy should get another hobby and leave y'all religious folk alone. posted by

" he fell off the nut tree and bumped his head...when he stoodup he was on a soap box and craving attention." Well, certainly no religious person has ever done that, right? He is voicing his opinion. I think he's going too far with it, even as I am a "devout" atheist, but he is still entitled, as a free American, to voice his opinion. He is also entitled to try to change things. He can propose and support whatever he wants. Religious people do that too. You can call him nuts all you want, but there are vastly more religious "nuts" out there trying to force their beliefs on the world than there are atheist "nuts" trying to stop them. Again, I think his efforts and energy are misdirected, but he'll figure that out. posted by
