Auto Prices About To Crash

With unsold cars stacking up by the day, demand falling faster, and bailout silliness getting sillier, I have three easy to make predictions.

1) Hundreds of dealerships are headed for bankruptcy in 2009
2) The
Fed Is Destined To Become World's Largest Auto Dealership
3) Cars are going to get cheaper, much cheaper. Auto prices will crash. Liquidation sales later this year after the 2010 models come out are going to be fabulous.

It makes no sense to buy a car now, no matter how good the deal looks. The deals will get progressively better as the year rolls on.

Woohoo, how much my $350,000 Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster will cost after the crash?? Will I be able to afford it finally? I hope so. I'll take you for a ride in it when I get it, SCR.

As much as I like my car, I regret buying  it instead of a small SUV    I need a pickup but wanted a car so now I have the car with no way to haul anything.

Too late for me.  Can't afford two vehicles and no way can get rid of the car in this market since it's not paid off.

No matter how good the deals get, I don't want car payments the rest of my life.

That's why my next car will be a Honda Fit Nancy (unless someone one-up's the idea and gets something better). It's a car, but it can be configured to hold nearly 50 cubic feet of cargo (as long as you can give up the back seat while carrying the cargo). If you can give up the front passenger seat too, you can carry items up to about 8 feet in length. I like to call it the micro-SUV since it's a sub-compact car size, but can carry so much. But I am not buying in this economy while my little old Civic is still chugging along.

Volvo makes a wagon which they claim has 72.1 cubic  feet cargo capacity.  http://www.volvocars.com/us...  My son drives an  older Volvo wagon.  I bring it when helping friends move. They are amazed at the cargo room when the seats are put flat.  His Volvo is old (1995).  It is a pre-Ford Volvo.  I understand the newer ones have Ford related issues.   I  have a 2007 Highlander it has only  a .10 inch longer wheel base than the Volvo.   It holds taller things than the Volvo but its seats don't fold down as flatly.  I enjoy driving both cars.  When my son moves off to college I might just let him have the newer  Highlander and keep that Volvo for myself.

My last car was a '91 Plymouth Sundance L-back  2 door coupe and, with the back seat down it had an enormous cargo area.  I dearly loved that little car.  At one time I had a Honda Civic Accord hatchback (in the 80's) and used it as transportation as well as my finish electricians vehicle.  I could get an unbelievable amounts of light fixture boxes, boxes of wire, and all my supplies for switches, plugs etc in it.  Once in Lancaster I noticed steel bands sticking out of my tire and had to go to a tire shop to buy new ones.  I felt for the poor guy because he had to help unload the whole area to get to the spare.

I grateful for my 94 Ford P/U..paid for..registration is low...the money I save from new vehicle payments goes towards upkeep and maintance..insurance..and still in original condition...no fancy wheels-sound system-loud pipes...just a P/U with a BIG 351c.i.

It also kinda makes me sick too...the P/U is in better shape than me....

I figure the Sonata is the last car I'll own.  Who can afford car payments on retirement and I won't be able to work forever.

I'm waiting for my daughter to get a car and donate her little old Ford Ranger to me.  A cheapie paint job, Pep Boys seat covers and it'll be good as new.  Well, except for that little oil leak.  And the bracket that keeps the a/c from working.

im happy with my 2500hd silverado diesel 4x4.  it does everything i throw at it homeowner-wise, like picking up 3 cubic yards of mulch, buying furniture and not paying the ridiculous delivery fee, pulling stumps out of the ground, getting lumber to build a new fence, yada yada yada

i also use it to tow my toyhauler to numerous locations throughout California, like Oceano Dunes, Dumont Dunes and Glamis.  I expect to get at least 300,000 miles on it, and ive already got 100k on it now...its my daily driver, its an 03, and has never let me down.

my wife is due for a new car though...she want a 7 series now

I went car shopping a few weeks back and found out that they're not that hungry yet.  Although the lots I visited didn't have a customer in sight on Saturday afternoon, they still played the same game as they have always in the past.  Mind you, I only go the car lots to get the feel of the car.  All my purchases are done through a broker that can get the car much cheaper.  So, here are some of the tell tale signs indicating lack of hunger.

1.  The sales person still asked "how much in monthly payment can you afford?"  The reason for this statment being offensive is very obvious.

2. " Deal?  I don't know about that. Let me check with my manager."   Of course 0% for 36 month has been all over the place and this sales person is hoping I didn't know about it.

3.  Finally, oh that painful trick of making you sweat it out.  "You wait here while I go talk to the Manager".
