Michelle Obama showed up Thursday as a surprise and welcome volunteer at Miriam's Kitchen
First Lady Michelle Obama showed up Thursday as a surprise and welcome volunteer at Miriam's Kitchen, a soup kitchen for homeless poor people not far from the White House. She brought with her some food donated by White House staff. The first lady served up mushroom risotto and broccoli to a long line of homeless men and women during part of her lunch hour and in these photos poses for a picture by one homeless diner obviously excited to be in the first lady's presence. It doesn't detract from the first lady's generous gesture or the real needs she seeks to highlight to ask two bothersome journalistic questions about these news photos: 2) And if he is homeless, where do they send the cell phone bills?

This might be heart warming, if she hadn't been up the night before partying with her usual wednesday night guests, blowing off taxpayers money on extravagant meals and entertainment, then riding in her motorcade to the 'staged event' for the media in an attempt to immortialize herself. Now if she did it as a regular job at lunchtime and took the money she's spending on those parties to help support some of those meals etc, I might be impressed. This is such a sham. Another sad thing is the kitchen is located just a mile away from the 'White House'.. posted by

A couple of things: This is an email forward that it making its way through the countless individuals who dislike the Obamas. Second, no comment on the "homeless" man with a phone? Really SCR - you didn't take advantage of that opportunity. Hmm? Third - check out Snopes and all the false claims against the Obamas. All I can say is - interesting. Also, can you substantiate your "partying with her usual wednesday night guests" , I am truly intrigued by this comment. posted by

The only response to this silly blog is to make the frisking of homeless people mandatory in the future. That way charities can determine whether homeless people are really, really hungry, or just faking it. posted by

You can pick up a prepaid camera phone at Walmart for $20. And perhaps he had the phone before he was homeless. Certainly if I were to lose my house for some reason, that doesn't mean I'm going to chuck my cell phone in the trash on the way out the door. I'd put the recharger in one pocket and the phone in another and use a prepaid SIM if I needed to make calls. It's very common for the homeless to have cell phones these days. It gives them a phone number to put on job and assistance applications for one. Plus, if there's trouble, they can call 911 from their cell phone instead of hoping some stranger on the street will stop and help them or let them use the phone. Here is the Washington Post article addressing the exact issue you raises in this blog SCR. The article even features an employed homeless guy on the second page who has only managed to keep his job due to being reachable by cell phone. www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/200 9/03/22/AR2009032201835.html posted by

Virgil--I'm sure Barbara Bush helped out, too. All the first ladies have had projects during their tenure. I always admired Laura Bush's passion for libraries and reading, since they are passions of mine, too. To be honest, I wouldn't be First Lady for all the tea in China. What a drag!!! You have to live in a house that strangers walk in and out of all day. Your husband's office is right down the hall, along with all of his co-workers and their important business that can't wait until dinner's over or the movie's finished. Half of the country will automatically hate your husband the nanosecond he's elected, and all of your motives will be suspect. Who needs it? Thank God Michele and Barbara and Laura are doing it and I don't have to! LOL! posted by

Sioux--you've seemed a little down for a while. I can understand that the economy and everything would bum you out--I think a lot of us are bummed out about that, but you have to try to stay positive for the people who care about you. If the blogs are getting to you, take a little vacation from the blogs--it will really help. It's a beautiful day outside--sunshine, blue sky, nice little breeze--get creative with it. Make yourself a sandwich or a salad and take it out under a tree today. Listen to the peace and the birds. But best of all--if you have a swingset on your property, go swing on the swingset. It sounds childish, I know, but it is SUCH a stress reducer--I do it at least 2 or 3 times a day, and you'd be amazed how freeing and calming it is. Bottom line--mellow out, Bud. Life's too short. : ) posted by

Hey Sioux, I do volunteer work at our local Rescue Mission from time to time. I was surprised at how many folks have a basic cell phone. Some have the call time used up, but you can still call 9-11 anyway if needed. I would imagine that the folks being served by the first lady got a nice boost. The folks I've encountered at the Rescue Mission certainly don't strike me as con artists. Some aren't homeless, just hungry. Cheer up my friend. After doing a little service time at the Mission, you leave with a smile, because you realize just how lucky you are :)

If you say so, Schwaine. Methinks that the major objection to Obama by the right wing is that a black man had the, well, audacity, to defeat a white guy in the election. And it *REALLY* drives them nuts that they can't come out and say it. You get hints of it when they start criticising welfare recipients and people at soup kitchens for not giving up cellphones or surrendering their fourth-amendment rights. And Michelle is *STILL* more popular than Laura. posted by

teacher: WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House is the place to be on Wednesdays.
Since the presidency changed hands less than six weeks ago, a burst of entertaining has taken hold of the iconic, white-columned home of America's head of state. Much of it comes on Wednesdays. The stately East Room, where portraits of George and Martha Washington adorn the walls, was transformed into a concert hall as President Barack Obama presented Stevie Wonder with the nation's highest award for pop music on Wednesday. A week before that, the foot-stomping sounds of Sweet Honey in the Rock, a female a cappella group, filled the East Room for a Black History Month program first lady Michelle Obama held for nearly 200 sixth- and seventh-graders from around the city. Cocktails were sipped during at least three such receptions to date, all held on Wednesdays. Bookending the midweek activity were a Super Bowl party for select Democratic and Republican lawmakers and a dinner for governors, the new administration's first black-tie affair. It was capped with a performance by the 1970s pop group Earth, Wind and Fire. And a conga line. The flurry of entertaining is in keeping with the Obamas' promise to make the White House a more open place for everyone. The governors' dinner was "a great kickoff of what we hope will be an atmosphere here in the White House that is welcoming and that reminds everybody that this is the people's house," Obama told the state chief executives after they had dined on Maryland crab, Wagyu beef, Nantucket scallops and citrus salad. "We are just temporary occupants. This is a place that belongs to the American people and we want to make sure that everybody understands it's open," he said. At the dinner in the State Dining Room, the Obamas looked comfortable, chatting and smiling with their guests. Afterward, they escorted the governors down the hall to the East Room, which had been arranged with few tables and chairs to encourage dancing to "September," "Boogie Wonderland" and other hits from a musical group Obama listened to growing up. The conga line formed after the media were escorted out and, apparently, after Obama had called it a night. posted by

Catherine....when does being positive & eating sandwiches cross the line into being willfully ignorant? I think it's very positive to expose the criminals who hijacked this country. i.e. the filth that run Obama & his puppet administration. Bush should of been arrested.....let's do a better job going after the latest installment of trash in the Whitehouse. Nothing wrong with being positive but make sure the type of positivity you are engaging in doesn't blind you to the truth.

RF, you are so wrong and so far off base you're not even in the same realm. The people I've talked to and know couldn't care less about obama being Black. He's a LIBERAL. Do you think we wouldn't have been all over HIlary if she'd won? I don't know how many times you have to be reminded that the dissenters are conservatives....THAT is the reason they don't want obama in office. He's a flaming LIBERAL. Regarding the real reason for this post. I had a gal who lived at the mission and worked in the kitchen tell me that at either Thanksgiving or Christmas they had more volunteers than they needed to serve food. Everyone wants to do that. She tild me what they really needed was volunteers to wash dishes, stir pots, and bus tables. Unfortunately there's not glory or publicity in that. As for growing a garden. Has it been decided yet who will pull weeds on a daily basis? Will it be Michele, the kids or the grandma? Or will it be the gardeners? If it's the gardeners, they might as well buy it at the produce store and help support a farmer. posted by

RF, you are so wrong and so far off base you're not even in the same realm. Baloney. My reasons are explained above. And even the KKK knows enough to deny racism--publically. . at either Thanksgiving or Christmas they had more volunteers than they needed to serve food. Everyone wants to do that. So, was the picture above taken at Thanksgiving or Christmas? . As for growing a garden. Has it been decided yet who will pull weeds on a daily basis? You pull yours daily? Isn't that a bit obsessive? . He's a flaming LIBERAL. No, he isn't. That's a large part of the problem. This country has damned few liberal politicians. And he's uppity, too.

Cat, the original poster put up a report of a selfless act and cheapened it. Yes, I know, Random. I swear, you guys must really think I'm dense sometimes. I saw which way the wind was blowing on this blog and decided to cut it off at the knees, so to speak (and sorry for mixing metaphors.) And it worked. Rather than having to watch my fellow Liberals continue to get whipped up into a lather over what is really a tiny ripple in the blogosphere, I diverted the topic entirely. See for yourself. But then it all snowballed anyway after you took what was a heartfelt, sincere comment to Sioux about cheering up and turned it negative anyway. And then Infowar seemingly accuses me of being willfully ignorant, and I can see that I can't stop a fight between such willing participants. Infowar--I really do have very strong feelings about the economy, the war(s), the Bush Administration and Obama, but I also realize that my sitting at a computer desk and arguing with other bloggers about it isn't going to change anything. So I will take my sandwich outside and sit under the tree and save up all of my angst for election day, when I actually CAN make a difference. posted by

Who said anything about Americacorp? RF, now you're calling me a liar. Baloney? RE helping out in missons...the POINT RF, the POINT is that when people volunteer they don't want to be washing dishes...they want to serve so people can thank them and see how giving they are. I didn't bring Michelle up..you did. I merely pointed out that volunteering means ALL aspects..and since you brought it up, it's not just the photo with spoon in hand that impresses me. If she'd been up to her elbows in soap suds I'd have respected her for it. RE farden. I don't have a garden to weed daily or oterwise.
