Biden tells family to stay off planes, subways
President Barack Obama, with Vice President Joe Biden, right, addresses the AP – President Barack Obama, with Vice President Joe Biden, right, addresses the rising concern of Swine Flu …

WASHINGTON – Joe Biden said Thursday he advised his family to stay off airplanes and subways because of the new swine flu, a remark that forced the vice president's office to backtrack and prompted one airline official to complain about "fear-mongering."

"I would tell members of my family — and I have — that I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places now," Biden said on NBC's "Today" show.

Biden, who has a reputation for off-the-cuff remarks, went beyond any precautions recommended by the federal government. In discussing his personal advice to his family, he said simply, "That's me."

Within two hours, Biden's office issued a statement backing off the remarks and suggesting he was talking about travel to Mexico.

"On the 'Today Show' this morning, the vice president was asked what he would tell a family member who was considering air travel to Mexico this week," said spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander. "The advice he is giving family members is the same advice the administration is giving to all Americans: that they should avoid unnecessary air travel to and from Mexico. If they are sick, they should avoid airplanes and other confined public spaces, such as subways."

Biden, who has three grown children and five grandchildren, was asked whether he would advise his own family against flying to Mexico on a commercial flight.

"It's not just going to Mexico, if you're in a confined aircraft and one person sneezes it goes all the way through the aircraft," Biden said on NBC. "That's me. I would not be at this point, if they had another way of transportation, suggesting they ride the subway."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends avoiding nonessential travel to Mexico. But it isn't recommending that people avoid other travel because of the swine flu.

American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith declined to comment directly on the vice president's remarks, but said, "To suggest that people not fly at this stage of things is a broad brush stroke bordering on fear mongering."

"The facts of the situation at this stage anyway certainly don't support that," Smith told The Associated Press.

U.S. Travel Association President Roger Dow urged the public to "heed the advice of medical experts" and gently chided the vice president without specifically mentioning him.

"Elected officials must strike a delicate balance of accurately and adequately informing citizens of health concerns without unduly discouraging travel and other important economic activity," Dow said in a statement Thursday.

During his decades as Delaware senator, Biden was a regular on Amtrak, riding the train from Wilmington to Washington.

Asked on NBC's "Today" show whether the U.S. government should close the border with Mexico, Biden said health authorities advise that would be impractical and noted the new flu is already in the U.S. and several other nations.

Instead, Biden said, the focus should be on slowing the spread of the virus through groups of people in close quarters, such as airplanes, malls, stadiums and classrooms.

"Closing the classroom and closing the border are two fundamentally different things," he said.

The CDC recommends basic precautions such as hand-washing, use of alcohol hand gels and monitoring local health advisories when traveling. The government also advises that children with the flu be kept home from school and day care. Biden said he hoped employers would be generous with workers who stayed home to care for a sick child.

If this jokers makin remarks like this..it cant be all that serious...I wonder if he can be brought up on charges for damaging the airlines with such a brash statement

Heh, that Joe.  The soul of instilling confidence and steady at the helm advice.  Imagine,  him having to backtrack form one of his comments.  What a surprise.

Frankly, there's so many less than bright people when it comes to how flu is transmitted, I'm not suprised airlines freaked out over this comment. Most people don't realize there's very little airborne transmission (unless you happen to get coughed or sneezed on directly and that's not really airborne anyways). As we saw from the Flu vs Fruit blog yesterday, some even seem to think you can get the respiratory flu from food. These are likely the same people who don't cover their cough or wash their hands after using a tissue when they are sick.... even though hand contact with contaminated surfaces is the major mode of transmission. Thank god for travel sized Purell and Clorox wipes.

I wonder if the airlines have an avenue through the courts to recoup some of the losses that might result from comments of dearly beloved Joe.

I'll bet a dollar to a doughnut that there are times Obama would like to slap Biden upside the head.

Nancy, I'm sure he has had a couple of second thoughts about his first choice.

Scary though huh?  Him being POTUS instead of DOOFUS.  Oh wait, he'd be both.  Yikes !

Alicen, that, or he's wondering who in the sam hill chose Biden for him.

Could've been worse---McCain/Palin could've won and McCain could have went ' toes up ' and Mavrick Palin AND Dude could be at the helm....that's when I would want that ' right to die with dignity ' enforced.....but that's just my opinion....

As far as ' Joe '....any parent would give advice to their children..especially at a time like this....what would you tell your kids....

posted by motopoet on Apr 30, 2009 at 11:27 AM

Ahhh..the hate and bitterness line again. Let's drag those who are NOT in office in to the fray to create another shiny object to distract the uninformed from the REAL problems.

McCain/Palin would have had the sense to watch what they said about this lunacy, and not only COULD it be worse, it WILL get worse and it's THIS administration that will make it so.

I have already told my kids that many thousands die each year from REGULAR strains of influenza and that placing a name in front of another strain doesn't make it a pandemic. Anyone remember the Russian Flu, Bird Flu, etc.? All were certain signs of the apocolypse. Where are they now.  This strain does not host well in humans, as is the case with 99% of all strains illnesses that primarily infect animals.

Ling..Do or did you make your kids stay home from school or away from malls or other crowded places when the flu is/was going around? Like our pediatrician told us years ago. If you're going to get sick, you're going to get sick. If you have a good immune system, you'll be fine.

As of 0800 PDT this morning, there were SEVEN confirmed deaths in Mexico due to this strain, NOT the 150 reported yesterday.

posted by Lingtaowoo on Apr 30, 2009 at 11:42 AM

Heck no....kids will be kids---and when they got sick..you used your head and made them better---common sense...but then again-when I was a kid, anything I got-(clap) could be cured with a shot...now-a-days---you can forget the shot---you are going to die...there is no cure....

Viruses 'evolve' faster then humans...

Wow, honesty from a politician. Who would have ever expected it?

McCain/Palin would have used the swine flu as an excuse to cut taxes on the rich again. You know, as a way to stimulate our immune systems.

This flu worries me, but I am happy for those who aren't worried about it.

PP, glad you know you have the inside track on what McCain and Palin would do.  Looks like you got your crystal ball out of the repair shop just in time for this crisis..

As for what Biden tells his kids, that's one thing.  It's quite another for the second highest office holder in the nation gets on national TV and says it.  If enough gullible people bought that presidential ticket don't you think they'll believe just about anything they say?

I'm sure all the transit systems and irlines are tickled pink with vice doofus.

Dril - you really have no room to talk about voting morons into office..

Oh?  And who might you be talking about?

Is your electoral decision already becoming a sore spot?

posted by CatherineBaker on Apr 30, 2009 at 07:17 PM

Because I don't want to be accused of hypocrisy, I will first state that, for at least 40,000 years (give or take 10,000 years,) Democrats bashed Bush relentlessly, ruthlessly, and religiously.  They did it every single day, with a single-minded determination rivaled only by Olympic athletes, and they clairvoyantly began their bashing even before Bush was born, belittling the man first on their little clay tablets (which they passed around for the amusement of other ancient Democrats) and later on papyrus scrolls (some of which made it into the Bible, they claim.)

You'd think it would finally be the Republicans' turn.  Unfortunately, the Republicans landed on "Skip a Turn" this election cycle.

So to answer your question, Dril-- I may not be completely satisfied with Obama, but I will never regret NOT voting for McGeezer and McHairTeaser.

Ha Ha!

Somebody's backtracking....got in trouble maybe?

WASHINGTON -- One day after saying he wouldn't travel in tight quarters because of the swine flu scare, Vice President Joe Biden rode a train Friday from Washington to Delaware.

Known for speaking freely, Biden told NBC's "Today" show on Thursday that he had urged family members to avoid airplanes and subways for fear of contracting the H1N1 flu virus.

"I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places now," Biden said.

The comments infuriated the travel industry and triggered several revisions from the Obama administration, whose official advice is less severe.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano commented, "If he could say that over again, he would say if they're feeling sick, they should stay off of public transit or confined spaces."

By Friday night, Biden seemed ready for his own do-over. A longtime rider of Amtrak, he took a train from Union Station to his Delaware home, his office said.

"I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places now," Biden said.

Let face it. The guy is a complete moron. Like the comedians say, he is Obamas assassination insurance policy.  I guess he doesn't think an Amtrak coach is a confined space...

They told me that if I voted for McCain we'd get a moron Vice President.

And they were right!  Goog one Dril
