Hawaii again declares Obama birth certificate real

HONOLULU – State officials in Hawaii on Monday said they have once again checked and confirmed that President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born American citizen, and therefore meets a key constitutional requirement for being president.

They hoped to stem a recent surge in the number of inquiries about Obama's birthplace.

"I ... have seen the original vital records maintained on file by the Hawaii State Department of Health verifying Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born American citizen," Health Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said in a brief statement. "I have nothing further to add to this statement or my original statement issued in October 2008 over eight months ago."

So-called "birthers" — who claim Obama is ineligible to be president because, they argue, he was actually born outside the United States — have grown more vocal recently on blogs and television news shows.

Fukino issued a similar press release Oct. 31, but was prompted to speak out again because of the renewed attention on Obama's beginnings. Hawaii's Health Department has been flooded in recent weeks with questions from individuals and several national TV news networks asking for proof that Obama was indeed born in Hawaii.

"They just keep asking over and over and over again," Health Department spokeswoman Janice Okubo said.

The Constitution states that a person must be a "natural-born citizen" to be eligible for the presidency. Birthers contend that Obama's birth certificate is a fake, and many say he was actually born in Kenya, his father's homeland. They've challenged his citizenship in court.

One widely circulated YouTube clip of a town hall meeting showed a Republican congressman getting booed for saying Obama is a citizen. Talk show host Rush Limbaugh and CNN's Lou Dobbs have also raised the issue, and 10 Republican members of Congress co-sponsored a bill that would require future presidential candidates to provide a copy of their original birth certificate.

However, it appears Congress has moved on and has accepted Obama's island birthplace. The U.S. House on Monday unanimously approved a resolution recognizing and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Hawaii becoming the 50th state. A clause was included that reads: "Whereas the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961."

State law bars the release of a certified birth certificate to anyone who does not have a tangible interest.

However, Obama's birth certificate along with birth notices from the two Honolulu newspapers were brought forward even before he took office. But that's done nothing to shake the belief by many Obama critics that the president was born abroad.

NOW can we ALL move on..maybe get together for once to start fixing this mess.. I still wont give him or Joey full rein..we would be foolish to do that..but atleast now maybe negotiations will go easier...however a viewing would have been a better way of doing it..all O had to do was give his permission..

I should think the citizens of the united states would have a tangible interest..

Some will cling to conspiracies as an article of faith. The Warren Commission was a cover-up; Marilyn Monroe was mudered by the CIA; remains of space aliens are stashed at Area 51....evidence or testimony to the contrary is a lie or cover-up.

If the darn document was produced, it would be a forgery. If experts authenticated it, there would be a CIA cover-up. If the doctor who delivered the baby testified on a stack of bibles, he'd be lying. Obama is not the first prez to have his birth questioned despite evidence to the contrary.

I've stayed quiet about this birth certificate issue because it seemed pointless to argue.   However, my feelings about it are, and have been,  that there's no way the Republican party would ever have stood still for the non citizen thing if they really thought there was a shred of truth to it.

To continue to waste resources on this non issue is likened to worrying about Nero fiddling on the roof while Rome burned.

As for Rush, I"ve personally heard him say this is a waste of time and we have more important issues to deal with.  EVERYONE tossed it around for a while and it made for interesting speculation. but c'mon people...pay attention to the big picture here....

More homilies..Straining at a gnat and swallowing an elephant comes to mind.  ...MOVE ON.

Now if y'all can convince blogger paxchristi of this, significant progress will have been made.  ;-)

Pax is alright..he just wanted the same thing I did..*PROOF*

Thank you Nancy~ I maintained from the start that both parties would have been all over this if it had a grain of truth to it.

Except that the birthers are allied with the people setting the fires.  Gives them something else to do while the bucket brigade works.

And if they *ALL* show up at once, I'm sure Hawaii will comply.  But I ain't going without a free ticket and a week's stay.

That's O.K. ~Random~...the ' birthers' are going to have " she who walks on water " (Sarah) come down from God's Country and stir up a brand new pot of ca-ca for them--wonder what it's going to be this time

She'll go down to Miami and claim she can see Cuba from there?   You betcha(wink).

No, I know Pax. He's certifiable. He won't accept this, either.

posted by defyinggravity on Jul 28, 2009 at 08:50 AM

I totally agree with NancyII.  If there had been any proof to this they would have found a way to come out with it and make it known and his presidency wouldn't have been legitimate.  I honestly think they should change the constitution about presidency and make it where you have to be third born american citizen.  Anywhoo...

Now all we have to do is convince the OTHER HALF to realize he's not muslim.  I swear to krishna, some still believe he's muslim.  After that whole reverend right (wright?) thing.

~Random~...and she can hook-up with that dope fiend Flush Limpball and come up with new and exciting ways on how to divide a country...( wink-wink )

See there RF, you correct me or argue with me even when we're on the same side as in this issue.

Tsk..you should have just let my comment stand......for once.  THAT would have been refreshing.

(Geezuz..I can't believe I said we were on the same side of a political issue...wow!)

edited...besides, I'm more concerned about our "rome" burning under  the big O' than I am about the birth certificate thing.

Well, technically Nero didn't fiddle, since the fiddle hadn't yet been invented...

/pedant mode OFF/

I simply assumed that you were painting Obama in the Nero role--and he seems to me to be directing the firefighting efforts.  If Nero in this instance is supposed to be Loud Obbs, then I was in error. :)

Nancy, I "heard" what you were trying to say. ;)   We'll see if Pax lets this one go without comment.  I had an interesting discussion with a birther the other day.  It turns out, I know one! Eep.  It was so bizarre because this person is normally not down for the conspiracy theory thing but was holding on to this one for dear life.  I could debunk each of his claims in quick succession and he still had his teeth sunk in.  It came down to him admitting that there would never be any proof good enough for him and he admitted it.  While I like this person quite a bit, I lost a lot of respect for him yesterday and told him so.  Is it racial? I don't know.  Is it not wanting to admit to being wrong?  What is it?

Reason, I just saw someone refer to such folks as "flat birthers" and just about fell off my chair.

Le mot injuste indeed.

nancy i think RF wears a mirror around his neck so if theres nobody else around he can argue  with himself..dont sweat it kid..

Plain English please RF, mine was a take off on the old Rome burned while Nero fiddled but then you knew that.  Thanks for the history lesson tho...  what WOULD we do without correctionists?  :-)

You've been reading too many of Shwaines responses.

Thanks Reason,. that was quite "reason"able of you.

(edited...thanks to you too Sioux.

I thought I'd better come back and make typo corrections before the correctionists correct me again.)

Nancy and I are only on the "same side of this issue" because it's such a silly, minor issue.

It's like she's agreeing that, yes, the earth is actually round but still maintains there's no such thing as global warming.

For the record, yes, Nancy is correct that the birth certificate flap is a nonsense issue peddled by folks whose cranial capacity is oversized for its contents.

Besides, we've agreed before.

Okay--this blog is excellent this morning.  A shout out to Random, Sioux, and also Nancy for being too funny today!!!

Le mot juste is French for "just the right word."

Le mot injuste would be "just the right insult."  A pun.  More or less.  :)

What would have made my day when Sarah was saying Goodbye to the people of Alaska would be if she played something on her flute--that would make anyone's stool softener kick in--( wink-wink )

So let me get this straight--LOST the National Election= LOSER

Gave up the Governorship of Alaska= QUITTER

Coming to the lower 48 states to  help out her fellow GOP to keep their zippers up and not cheat with other MEN and WOMEN= Peeing into the wind....

Can't wait to see the reception she'll receive when she hits Hollywood.....

Ah indeed we have RF, indeed we have.  Not often ...but still......

As for  Limbaugh..I take slight exception to tags like "dope fiend" since I'm in that biz and could tag anyone who ever had a substance abuse problem with the same thing.  Careful people..remember the glass houses.

As my favorite lecturer said about alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, heroin and scrip pills et al  "a dope fiend is a dope fiend is a dope fiend is a dope fiend, a dope fiend.

And with that parting shot..I'm off to lunch..Mexican food, which I am definitely addicted to.

Toodles y'all.  Or should I say "adios" in honor of the cuisine?

CAT...this really is a fun blog.

I have to admit I'm a fence-sitter here.

While I have no reason to disbelieve the Hawaii state officials who have "seen the original", hiding behind the mantra:
"...State law bars the release of a certified birth certificate to anyone who does not have a tangible interest." is disingenuous at best.

While I have no reason to disbelieve him, I have no reason whatsoever to believe him either!  I have a healthy distrust of ALL elected officials and political appointees. This distrust was born in the Watergate era, so pardon me if I choose to remain distrustful.

There is a LOT at stake here and if it is in the best political interests for a politician to lie, they will lie to you without batting an eye. Democrat, Republican, Green, or Independent... They will ALL lie if it suits their agenda.

Ummm, wouldn't the determination of whether a person is legally entitled to assume elective office constitute a "tangible interest" for every citizen?

I would offer every citizen in America has a tangible interest in this matter.   It is an insult to the millions of American citizens this hasn't been put to rest a LONG time ago by releasing the actual original certificate of birth.

If there is nothing to hide, than why hide it?

For a fence sitter you sure have a rightward leaning slant. Be careful you don't fall.

So, do I agree with the birther movement? No. Not because I think they are definitely wrong, but because I personally don't feel that the president's place of birth is a relevant issue.

i must say after reading those few words Im starting to become disheartened again since this appears to be a popular belief among his supporters..i dont know whats going to happen too america but she feels like shes real sick and needs to go to intensive care..last time i felt like that my mom was gone an hour later..

too many people with too many opinions..ya i know thats one of the reasons our country was established ..sadly it might just be her downfall

Speaking of the Warren Commission, there's a very compelling argument that the Mafia had JFK killed.  There's quite a bit of documentation and evidence that make it very hard not to highly consider such a notion.
