What if Barack Obama’s most important radical connection has been hiding in plain sight all along? Obama has had an intimate and long-term association with the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (Acorn), the largest radical group in America. If I told you Obama had close ties with MoveOn.org or Code Pink, you’d know what I was talking about. Acorn is at least as radical as these better-known groups, arguably more so. Yet because Acorn works locally, in carefully selected urban areas, its national profile is lower. Acorn likes it that way. And so, I’d wager, does Barack Obama.

John McCain's decision to suspend his presidential campaign and request a postponement of the first presidential debate tomorrow night has gotten empathy from an unlikely source, former President Bill Clinton. In appearances last night and this morning on national TV talk shows, Clinton has characterized McCain as acting in "good faith" regarding the postponement and even praised President Bush for laying out the financial crisis clearly in his national address last night. The remarks are reminiscent of the "third way" Bill Clinton of the 1992 campaign, a man who could radiate a willingness to listen to both sides of an argument and treat them with respect. It is an art form that is constantly put to the test by the need to make decisions as an office-holder, an area where then-President Clinton's record was decidedly mixed. Meanwhile, the prospects for Friday night's debate in Oxford, Mississippi, also seem mixed. The debate was to cover foreign policy, a McCain strength. That focus is misplaced now that the nation is riveted on the financial crisis. A majority of Americans seem to want the debate to go forward. The new elder statesman and diplomat, William J. Clinton, suggests the debate be reformatted to include time for the economy. Makes sense to me. If we're sailing on the Titanic, discussion of the ice fields is in order. WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats have decided to allow a quarter-century ban on drilling for oil off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to expire next week, conceding defeat in a months-long battle with the White House and Republicans set off by $4 a gallon gasoline prices this summer. House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey, D-Wis., told reporters Tuesday that a provision continuing the moratorium will be dropped this year from a stopgap spending bill to keep the government running after Congress recesses for the election. Republicans have made lifting the ban a key campaign issue after gasoline prices spiked this summer and public opinion turned in favor of more drilling. President Bush lifted an executive ban on offshore drilling in July. "If true, this capitulation by Democrats following months of Republican pressure is a big victory for Americans struggling with record gasoline prices," said House GOP leader John Boehner of Ohio. Democrats had clung to the hope of only a partial repeal of the drilling moratorium, but the White House had promised a veto, Obey said. The House is expected to act on the spending bill Wednesday. The Senate is likely to go along with the House. "The White House has made it clear they will not accept anything with a drilling moratorium, and Democrats know we cannot afford to shut down the government over this," said Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. "We look forward to working with the next president to hammer out a final resolution of this issue." While the House would lift the long-standing drilling moratoriums for both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, a drilling ban in waters within 125 miles of Florida's western coast would remain in force under a law passed by Congress in 2006 that opened some new areas of the east-central Gulf to drilling. Just last week, the House passed legislation to open waters off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to oil and gas drilling but only 50 or more miles out to sea and only if a state agrees to energy development off its shore. It quickly became clear that measure would not get the 60 votes needed in the Senate. Republicans called that effort a sham that would have left almost 90 percent of offshore reserves effectively off-limits. The Interior Department estimates there are 18 billion barrels of recoverable oil beneath the Outer Continental Shelf, about half of it off California. While the ban on energy development will be lifted if the Senate goes along with the House action, it doesn't mean any federal sale of oil and gas leases in the offshore waters — much less actual drilling — would be imminent. The Interior Department's current five-year leasing plan includes potential leases off the Virginia coast but probably would not be pursued unless the state agrees to energy development. And the state is unlikely to do so without Congress agreeing to share federal royalties with the state. The congressional battle over offshore drilling is far from over. Democrats are expected to press for broader energy legislation, probably next year, that would put limits on any drilling off most of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Republicans, meanwhile, are likely to fight any resumption of the drilling bans that have been in place since 1981. John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, has promised to make offshore oil drilling a priority if elected president. He has called for developing the oil and gas resources along all of Outer Continental Shelf and for the federal government to share royalties with states who go along with drilling. Democratic presidential rival Barack Obama has said he would support limited drilling in certain areas — possibly the South Atlantic region — if it is part of a broader energy plan to shift the U.S. away from oil to alternative fuels and more energy efficiency. The debate over offshore drilling is not expected to subside in the first months of the next presidency — no matter who sits in the White House. Lifting the drilling ban gives considerable momentum to the underlying bill, which includes the Pentagon budget, $24 billion in aid for flood and hurricane victims and $25 billion in loans for Detroit automakers in addition to keeping the government open past the Oct. 1 start of the 2009 budget year. But Democrats decided not to use the must-pass measure as a battering ram to carry an extension of unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless past White House veto promises, prompting grumbling among some lawmakers. Efforts to boost food stamps and give states billions of dollars to help with Medicaid bills also fell through. But the measure would double, to $5.2 billion, funding for heating subsidies for the poor, Obey said. The measure also would provide more than $600 billion to fund the 2009 budgets for the Pentagon, Homeland Security Department and the Veterans Affairs Department. Nine other spending bills for the 2009 budget year starting Oct. 1 remain unfinished. Bush had threatened to veto bills that don't cut the number and cost of pet projects known as "earmarks" sought by lawmakers in half from current levels or cause agency operating budgets, taken together, to exceed his request. Obey said, however, the White House would reluctantly sign the measure. Associated Press writer H. Josef Hebert contributed to this report.
This is my favorite story from my archives that explains exactly how I feel when I listen
to what the Democrats have to say . . . . .
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100.
If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1. The sixth would pay $3. The seventh would pay $7. The eighth would pay $12. The ninth would pay $18. The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59. So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve.
'Since you are all such good customers, he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your
daily beer by $20. Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men -
the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would
get his 'fair share?' They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted
that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up
being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce
each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts
each should pay.
And so: The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings). The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings). The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28%savings). The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings). The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings). The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings). Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.
'I only got a dollar out of the $20', declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, ' but he got $10!'
'Yeah, that's right', exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I!'
'That's true!!' shouted the seventh man. 'Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!'
'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!'
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something
important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction.
Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up
anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is
somewhat friendlier.

I watched one of these shows the other day..well part of it..I found it a tad annoying and had to change channels. Anyone else watch this show yet? Should it even be on the air? Trust me its alot worse than this video clip. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The video portion isnt working so to view this black preachers opinion on Obama go here I've been on these blogs for a while now..I've made a few friends and probably a few enemies. I enjoyed discussing the issues with many of you and even though I've found disagreements on occasion I tried to remain friendly for the most part..HM you wont ever change my mind but your living your life the way that it makes you happy..thats what counts..Random ya cranky ol fart..gonna miss the exchanges well some of them anyway *grin*.. To the many that are left and you know who you are I just want to say its been Great.I dont want to start naming names for fear of forgetting one and hurting one of my dear friends Ive developed here over this short time. I already had to give up the dog posts because I couldnt handle all the ugliness that kept developing around one of my greatest and best friends in the world...so I was already half way home. The recent postings about GOOD people considering leaving the blogs and why and then two posts later everyone was back at it each other again..it just felt like the time is right for this old long hair to take an extended spanish pause.. I just gotta go..Tridges post on speaking in tongues was the end of the line for this cowboy..generations of my family have been pentecostal..my relatives including my father were all either electricians or preachers and some were both given their finances at the time.. I have lots of fond memorys from my grade school years living with my grandparents on the reservation and little hole in the wall places all over the southwest while my grandfather taught the gospel and grandmother played the organ in renovated store fronts and church buildings..most of which he built himself with help from his congregation on weekends . He was a great man and saved alot of souls over the years. They never had any real money..max offering after the plate was past was usually under $100 for the week. He never took advantage of anyone or anything. He was always there to help and would give his last dollar if one of the congregation needed it to feed their kids or pay a bill. He did Gods work until he was 93 years old..thats around when he told me what Ive mentioned a few times here about Religion. He said, "Son it doesn't matter what you believe..christian jew Jehovah Witness none of them..just as long as you believe..that along with "do unto others" has stuck with me my entire life. I just cant think of any other way of expressing my feelings besides I was totally dumb founded by some of the things I was reading from some of the bloggers. It was offensive to my grandfather's memory and the major part of my family, many of whom are no longer with us. I can't in good concious keep still and just let people talk so badly about my people. Then again I refuse to argue until Im blue in the face.. about my right to my beliefs. So instead I chose to bow out and let you all have the floor. Turn the other cheek would be the proper verbage. .Anyway Rf's probably already penning 'Out with the old in with the new' right about now..so time to sign off Chico keep em dancing..I really feel Palin needs to win this for us all..Sam Heath has a great blog going right now and some of you might consider reading it... Remember before the white man came to America..it was the women that ran things..they did very well for centurys until the males decided they wanted to get more involved in tribal affairs. The white man also took many of the redmans beliefs and laws and intertwined them with many of americas early documents..alot of those ideas and values were set down by native american women. The rest is history...and so am I... Here ya go Nancy..its smily face time again.. An Irishman , a Mexican and a Blonde Guy were doing construction work on scaffolding on the 20th floor of a building. They were eating lunch and the Irishman said,'Corned beef and cabbage! If I get corned beef and cabbage one more time for lunch, I'm going to jump off this building.' The Mexican opened his lunch box and Exclaimed,'Burritos again! If I get burritos one more time I'm going to jump off, too.' The blonde opened his lunch and said, 'Bologna again! If I get a bologna sandwich one more time, I'm jumping too.' The next day, the Irishman opened his lunch box, saw corned beef and cabbage, and jumped to his death. The Mexican opened his lunch, saw a burrito, and jumped, too. The blonde guy opened his lunch, saw the bologna and jumped to his death as well. At the funeral, the Irishman's wife was weeping. She said, 'If I'd known how really tired he was of corned beef and cabbage, I never would have given it to him again!' The Mexican's wife also wept and said, 'I could have given him tacos or enchiladas! I didn't realize he hated burritos so much.' (Oh this is GOOD!!)? Everyone turned and stared at the blonde's wife. The blonde's wife said, 'Don't look at me. He makes his own lunch. The winner of the 2008 short film ... online competition - Cannes. ENJOY! The real aim of liberal lawmakers and their allies is to grab more power on Capitol Hill. If Puerto Rico is granted statehood, left-wing politicians could gain up to 10 new Congressional seats - Two in the Senate and 6-8 in the House. As a result, American taxpayers in six to eight states in the mainland U.S. will lose fair representation on Capitol Hill in order to give Puerto Rico its new lawmakers.
For those of you who might like a little more information about our Republican Candidate for VP - Sarah Palin
Feel free to agree or disagree, but here is an Alaskan's view point on our new VP candidate (and it is an opinion shared by the vast majority of Alaskan residents). :-) Sarah Palin is the US's answer to Margaret Thatcher! Anyone who thinks she cannot handle the job or deal briskly and efficiently with ANY issue, including foreign governments ... well, they haven't met our Sarah As an Alaskan resident as well as a resident of Wasilla, AK, where Sarah Palin was at one time Mayor ... I can speak with conf idence. Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska is exactly what she portrayed during her introduction this morning and exactly what our US Government needs. She is ethical to a fault (if there is such a thing), a refreshing change to the status-quo and as smart and determined a PERSON (gender really isn't an issue here as far as I'm concerned) as anyone could ask for at the head of government. Sarah is no naïve "small town mayor" - she just *started out* there. Btw, as Mayor of Wasilla, she brought this "small town" through a lot of GOOD changes and left it at the end of her term having grown to the 4th largest CITY in Alaska - a lot of growth and a stronger economic base than ever before. She has EXECTUTIVE experience *running a government* (something NONE of the other candidates can actually boast, even John McCain Sarah Palin is everything she looks to be and more. Her approval rating as Governor of Alaska has been as high as 95% and is currently leveled out consistently in the upper 80 percentile throughout the state (and in both parties) - the HIGHEST approval rating of ANY sitting Governor. Sarah has been turning around corruption in the Legislature of Alaska - turning things on their ear for that matter; cutting spending in spite of the increased income the state is currently receiving due to the high oil prices - she has insisted on putting a huge amount of the "windfall" into savings for the future rather than spending, spending, spending - and has insisted from the get-go on what she refers to as "honest, ethical and transparent governing" - no more closed door meetings and dealings - the big oil companies thought she would be a pushover and have learned better to their chagrin. She understands the "real people" and the economic issues we all face (Alaskans along with the rest of the country) - she was one of "us" not long ago. Rather than passing useless "laws" or throwing money at pet projects, she (most recently) temporarily suspended the state gas tax (on gasoline at the pumps, fuel oil and natural gas for homes, etc.) and has ordered checks issued to ALL residents of Alaska this fall in an attempt to assist with the burden of high fuel costs for the upcoming winter. I could go on and on, but that's enough for now She became Governor of Alaska by defeating the Incumbent Republican Governor and doing it *without* the money or the support of the Republican Party, which was amazing in itself - and she won by a landslide. The "powers that be" at that time totally underestimated Sarah and learned better the hard way. Let's hope Obama does the same. Sarah has done exactly what she claimed she was going to do when elected and is just as popular today as the day she was elected - perhaps more so since even the Democrats up here seem to like her - she works well with both sides in the Legislature here. Sarah "belongs" to us (Alaskans) ... and although we are going to be terribly sorry to see her leave before she finishes the job she started here (two years ago) straightening out OUR State As for worrying about what would happen if McCain were to die or step down or whatever ... here in AK we've only been wondering how long we would be able to KEEP Sarah in Alaska and have seen her as our first woman President of the USA from the start. It's always been a matter of whether she would wait until the end of her TWO terms as Governor (no doubt at ALL that she would be re-elected if she ran for a second term at the end of her current term) ... or end up in Washington sooner. She could do the job TODAY. Personally, I feel a lot better about McCain now that I know he has someone as savvy, as strong, as ethical and as steady as Sarah at his back. She will be an excellent Vice President ... and my guess is will be our US Republican Presidential candidate in four years - AND by then the country will KNOW here - will love and respect her as we do here - and she'll win by as much of a landslide as she did here in Alaska. I only wonder if McCain has a clue what he is unleashing on the US of A Is that enough of an endorsement? If not, I'll add this ... Jerry and I have for many years felt the best "vote" was to vote for the lesser of two "evils" and hope they didn't do too much damage. Two years ago during our State Governor's race was the first time EVER that we actually asked for not just a little sign to put in our yard showing our support of our candidate (something we've never felt the desire to do at all before) - we asked for a full 4' x 8' "SARAH PALIN FOR GOVERNOR!" sign and were proud to have it. She hasn't let us or Alaska down. She will do the same for the USA if given the opportunity. -Deb in Alaska |
