Kern County's sludge ban was slapped with a major-league lawsuit this week. This issue has been around since the last century and we decided we needed to create someplace for all our sludge coverage.

Most of the stuff you'll see in here will be the work of reporters Gretchen Wenner or Sarah Ruby. I may chime in myself, since I am a former county reporter and spent nearly a full month reporting and writing a sludge series a few years ago.

Here is a link to the story on the latest lawsuit.

Reporter Gretchen Wenner got a copy of the lawsuit and we've posted it online. Actually she informs me it was included in the press release the So Cal folks sent out.

You gotta love it when the lawyers send out press releases.

Columnist Robert Price checks in with a piece on the latest sludge lawsuit. Read the whole thing or check out this tidbit...

In mythological Los Angeles, all swimming pools are 82 degrees, the boy always gets the girl, the air is pure and nobody ever has to use the restroom.

In real life, however, L.A. flushes just like the rest of us. And where does that sewage stream flow? North. That's what Kern County is for.

The editorial page in the Bakersfield Californian has taken on the sludge lawsuit. Here is a taste of what they had to say. Read the whole thing here.

Kern County voters are looking at the business end of Southern California's big gun.

The City of Los Angeles has joined with other Southern California counties and agencies to file a federal lawsuit to block the ban voters approved in June on hauling sludge to Kern County, where it is smeared on farm land.

They have brought in the fire power of national law firms that have represented sludge applicators and disposal companies in legal battles over similar bans in other states.

They have declared war, bringing an army to fight what they hope will be a lone, underfunded rural county.

The stakes are extremely high for those of us who depend on clean air to breathe, unpolluted water to drink and untainted crops to eat.
