Rag journalism and Hillary Clinton story

Sound Off for Oct. 29

Reader: I would subscribe to the "Enquirer" if I wanted rag journalism. However, I thought that's what I got in Wednesday's Californian with the article about Hillary Clinton's political opponent accusing her of having a face-lift. This is important front page news?

I'm so discouraged with the lack of national and international news not reported in your paper. Don't you think some readers are interested in world events? The world is larger than Afghanistan and Iraq.

I like the way you have covered the candidates and the proposition for the upcoming election. The articles have been most helpful. Now let's work harder on finding some important news to print.

-- Margaret Clay

Reader: I have been witness over the years to The Californian's plunge into the abyss of irrelevancy as demonstrated today by their selection of political news a scant two weeks before Election Day.

The front page treated us to a dim dialogue as to whether or not Mrs. Clinton has submitted to plastic surgery. With all the news correspondents out there working to offer national essays of import for our consumption, The Californian opted to print gossip?

We the people need an active print participant in the fact-based, unbiased news of our nation, our state and our county. It is apparently beyond your ability to deliver.

Perhaps there is another group who is up for the job. I can only hope.

-- Lisa McIntyre

Jenner: Thanks for your comments. I should tell you that some members of the newsroom also had a negative reaction to that package. Some women thought it blatantly sexist, and I understand why they feel that way.

I will agree that Wednesday's page isn't going to make our "greatest hits" list.

But I'll also point out that from time to time we're going to try new things and do some things differently in an effort to engage our readers. On occasion those ideas may not work. When they don't, and we hear from readers like you, it helps us keep from making the same kind of mistakes going forward.

Your comments do matter. Thanks for letting us know how you feel.
