Eating a burger in the shadow of Michelle Obama

I visited Washington DC last week and felt it important to go with my sister and grand niece to Five Guys Burgers and Fries because Michelle Obama took her staff there in February.

The First Lady got a lot more press than I did.

But I mention this here because it was about as good a hamburger and fries as I've had in a burger joint. I had a cheeseburger ($5.59) which has two patties and a choice of 15 toppings you can put on it.

(mayo, relish, onions, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, jalapeno peppers, green peppers, A-1 sauce, bar-b-q sauce, and hot sauce)

I put relish, grilled onions, tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, ketchup and mayo on mine. The clerk at the Georgetown Five Guys, a nice man by the name of Steve, explained all this too me. Plus he kind of insisted I try their fries. Glad he did. They were about the best fries I've had anywhere.

Five Guys is expanding in the country, including two within 120 miles from Bakersfield -- Carson and Cerritos. So if you go there or one of them comes here, you might want to check it out.

Michelle Obama has pretty good taste.

You must be a socialist Muslim teleprompter with a fake birth certificate!  ;-)

Sounds like you had a yummy time. The heck with the tourist sights, where's the chow--I like your level headed priorities.

There is no way it beats a Teriyaki burger from the Country Boy Drive-in on Rosedale Hwy. No dang way....

LOL Witbee!  I used to work there when I was a teenager.  I agree--the teriyaki burgers are awesome.  I used to get a free dinner on my dinner break, and I would ask for one of those and an order of mushrooms with the ranch.  Mmmmm.  That's also where I got addicted to banana milkshakes (made with real bananas) and a big Pepsi with vanilla.

Country Boy  the Korean's  place on Airport Drive are two of the last places in town to offer an "honest to God" deep fried burrito.  I don't indulge often but when I do I want a burrito deep fried til it's HOT.

Yeah, that place on Norris (just east of Airport Dr) makes the best burritos ever.  Actually, everything they make is good.  I like going to those kind of Mom & Pop burger joints because they really will make your burger to order, however you want it.  Just mayonnaise and pickles?  You got it.  Extra onions?  Whatever you want.

I gotta say though, Steve--I am really intrigued about the list of toppings you mentioned at Five Guys.  Especially the idea of mixing & matching stuff however you want, like BBQ sauce and mustard and onions.  Mmmmm.

Cat-  my wife and I lived in the little house behind Country Boy after we got married. We ate there a lot. The owners at the time used to fill our bags with fries until it overflowed. They really knew how to hook you.

I remember that house, Witbee.  When I worked there it was a single guy that lived there, and he would come in all the time.  I thought how cool it would be to be single and eat burgers and drink milkshakes every day.  I couldn't wait to grow up.  Then I hit my 20s and got my own place and realized that I still couldn't eat burgers and drink milkshakes every day--it just wasn't healthy.  That was when I was still wearing a size 7, and wanted to keep it that way.

But yeah, Country Boy had its devotees.  Pretty much everything they cooked was good, and I should know because I tried almost all of it at once time or another.  LOL!

my favorite is when I worked at A&W in East LA, we would make orange float, tasted just like a 50-50 icecream and grape float, awesome...Country boy is good also

... and I thought when I tried In-N-Out for the first time a few years back that I had died and gone to heaven..

Ah nostalgia.  I remember when Country Boys was Glenns (is that the same one?  On the south side of Rosedale?)  That, and the one where Big Toms is now were the only "fast food" places west of the river.

Audrey, are you talking about the Carousel on Airport?   Back in '60 we used to eat there whenever we had the money.  We lived down the street on Woodrow.
