I met with newspaper union leaders from all over the country and Canada in Las Vegas last week.
We had a discussion on the future of the newspapers. It turns out The Bakersfield Californian is on the forefront of changes in providing all-day news updates, video, audio, podcasts (radio type news), blogs, citizen journalism and interactive media. Editor and Publisher, the industry magazine, recognized The Californian this month as one of the 10 most innovative newspapers in the country. I and many others still like the newspaper in my hands, but clearly we have moved to the Internet to better serve our readers and get them more involved in news and comment. I still miss that great smell of rubber cement when I used to write my stories on typewriters and past the copy pages together. |
