Code Enforcement goes on the offensive
In the past Bakersfield Code Enforcement officers have responded to complaints. But now, the city has a team of officers who are going out looking for problems. They're starting with Old Town Kern and working their way south, dealing with problems that range from poorly cared-for lawns and construction debris in the yard to unpermitted construction to abandoned buildings that have been converted into drug dens. They've sent out hundreds of letters so far, and they're just getting started on a project that will eventually include every single property in the city limits.

Have you received one of these letters? Should the city be telling people to clean up messes that nobody is complaining about? And how about your neighborhood -- is it clean, or is it ripe for code enforcement to come visit?

When neighborhoods are not kept up, like what the code enforcement people are seeing, it causes values to go down, crime to increase, and erodes the quality of life for the people who live in them. And just because a person is poor, doesn't mean they can't keep a decent looking place, as far as trash, abandoned cars, ect.

As usual the will hit those who can least afforded, just like we planned. I would be careful, though I few years ago we also had a couple of code enforcers, and they unceremoniously met an unfortunate fate at the hand of an angry landlord,
But maybe they will be issued bullet proof vests this time.
Yes,  hit those at the bottom hard, let the free market work, hit Those aliens and Blacks first, maybe they will move out and leave room for us good guys. Besides all those empty foreclosed and re bought houses all over town  meet all the codes, but  they do have large electricity and water bills. That one guy living part time in those houses in the Southwest and Northwest sure uses his
air -conditioner 24/7 and he showers a lot.

I got a letter for weeds in the back alley behind what I thought was my property line. I was informed the alley out to the center line is my responsibility. Live and learn.

You people have nothing to worry about.  Bakersfield Code Enforcement is the most impotent city agency there is.  I Have complained bitterly to everyone at city hall including the manager Randy, a real pin head, to the mayor, city manager and Hanson, my councilman.  It just falls on deaf ears.

I live in Campus Park and it is starting to look like the barrio!  Cars on lawns, disabled vehicles all over the place, some parked on the street for years, dead lawns, rv's on the street and hooked up with people living in them.  I think you get the picture..  They have come out a couple of times, but only after complaining for a year and getting the city manager involved.  And there is never any follow through.  Just look at East Bakersfield-benign neglect for 30 years and look what we got!  Now its College Heights falling pray to neglect.  Good luck on this one!

Taft has an interesting policy.  One a week in their small paper, they have a wreck of the week and put a photo of an abandoned car in it.  One I saw had all the windows broken out and the engine removed.  Nice planter if you have enough glowers.

You must be careful here though..some will tell you it's none of your business how your neighborhood looks.

When I was a lad we lived in one of the poorest neighborhoods in town.  There were four of up in a house with one small bedroom.  My brother and I slept on a fold out couch in the living room..Dad did own the house but the yard was always clean and mowed and the house and fence were always painted and maintained.  Sometime Dad would get free paint to use on the fence.  If he did not have enough of one color he would change colors at the corner...You can be poor and clean if you are not too lazy..
